Day 9 - Pitlochry to Glasgow. A little bit of a later start today since we need to go to Blair Athol before we leave Pitlochry. The distillery has been operating under license since 1798 and is part of the Bell's blended whiskey formula. We certainly enjoyed the tour but the tasting surprised us. This whiskey is unpeated and has a marvelous christmas pudding nose. Well of course we bought a bottle. Onwards to the old town of Stirling. William Wallace monument & Stirling Castle. We drove to William Wallace monument for some quick pictures and then off the the castle. To spend a few ours in this place is well worth it. The castle has been restored to what it looked like in 1503. SPECTACULAR!!!! The artwork, tapestries, furniture were all amazing. The ceiling in ... read more

Since leaving off last time, I started the official Fresher's week Monday evening by going to the Twin Atlantic concert at the Queen Margaret Union (QMU) followed by Hot Dub Time Machine at the Glasgow University Union (GUU). The latter was an audiovisual experience led by a DJ who took you through music from the 1950's all the way until 2014. It was an incredibly fun evening, despite the fact that we didn't arrive at the GUU until they had progressed into the late 90's (which, when included with the current era, was arguably the best portion of the night, so there were no regrets about being there late). The room was incredibly crowded and extremely hot, but that didn't stop everyone from dancing and having the time of their lives. Tuesday, I decided to take ... read more

Got given two weeks off work with a mix of leave and days off so headed back to the homeland. So excited as I only ever manage to get home for a couple days at a time and it's always so manic trying to see everyone. And the best part is that my boyfriend, Adam, was able to join me for one week. He hasn't been back home with me for over a year. So we flew up early on the Thursday morning, which happened to be one of the biggest days in Scottish History - the referendum vote for Independance. I had missed all of the pre vote hype and from reading the paper it seemed like there had been lots going on. My step mum picked us up from airport and brought us home. ... read more

Thursday afternoon, I took the bus tour of Glasgow which was really interesting. It was not quite what I was expecting, since we were in a one-story bus with windows as opposed to being in a double-decker bus where it's easier to see everything. However, it provided insight into how much bigger the city is than I had originally realized. The tour, which took us about two hours, took us to all of the major sights in and around Glasgow, inserting historical and architectural commentary throughout. All of the information was very interesting, but it was a bit hard to hear, so unfortunately I'm not sure how much of it I actually retained. The next morning, Friday, was the Loch Lomond bus tour. After walking to the university and meeting our guide, Gary, we got on ... read more

On Sunday evening, after an incredibly long journey to London Gatwick airport followed by a series of delays, I finally touched down in Glasgow, excited to take the university shuttle to the flat I would be staying in and start to get settled in. Unfortunately, however, the buses only ran every two hours and I had just missed the last one. So, I had to wait in the airport for about an hour and a half before the next one came. The journey to the university was quick, only about 15-20 minutes from the airport. We were the first stop, and I was able to walk across the street from the hall to pick up my keys. I'm staying on the third floor in a flat with four other people. We each have our own bedroom, ... read more

This summer we had the good fortune to be offered a month's work at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow. We had a great time there teaching academic English to students from China, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam, Turkey, Oman and Saudi. Of course, it also enabled us to explore part of the world we had never had the chance to see - the Glasgow area! The University itself is right in the heart of the city. It was literally ten minutes walk into the centre where, naturally, we tried out one or two bars and restaurants . It's not a cheap city to wine and dine in, but Wetherspoons can always be relied on when you need to keep the costs down. We didn't get around the city as much as we had hoped so we'll have ... read more

You’ve always wondered how come some people prefer to go on a trip on their own. After all, isn’t it the at least 5 friends you’re usually bringing with you that make the whole experience fun and unforgettable?! Who will be carrying the suitcases if your boyfriend is not around? Who is going to take all the pictures of you if you are alone? Taking a descent selfie with the Eiffel tower can turn out to be a mission impossible, believe me! Well, it does have some downsides, but travelling alone can also be… let’s just say it – PRETTY AWESOME!!! And here are some of the reasons! YOUR holiday The most suitable time for me to get few days off of work is next month, but Holly said she can only do it in two ... read more

We arrived in the lovely city of Glasgow early yesterday morning. The hotel was a little off the beaten trail, but was quite nice in its old fashioned sensibility. The baggage was stored in the hotel lobby and we took to the streets of Rutherglen (the 'burbs). One of the first stops was 'The Pound Store', where we had out first taste of the UK fare. Jaffa Cakes and Derbyshire Toffee. The next stop was a restaurant where Adam had his first fish and chips (on the island). We continued to wander and came across a church that stood out. There was activity there so we headed over to check it out. We were warmly greeted by a group of parishoners who were excited and proud to show us the grounds and inside the church and ... read more
