Europe » Netherlands » Drenthe » Assen August 1st 2014

When we woke the next morning, we were excited and ready for the short trip to our family with a few pitstops along the way. Our first stop was at the scenic village of Zaanse Schans, a modern example of a historic Dutch village. Among all of the shops and windmills, there was a clog (traditional wooden shoe) museum and workshop. It was quite interesting to learn about and to watch craftsmen produce these shoes the same way they were many years ago. Another important past of Dutch history that we experienced was the crossing of a dike. Before reaching our destination, we stopped in the bustling town of Sneek for an incredible dinner. When we finally made it to Bovensmilde, our home for the next couple of days, we had a short visit with family ... read more

We drove into The Netherlands from Belgium, and after seeing beautiful countryside and many windmills, we arrived at our hotel, a couple of minutes outside of Amsterdam. It was to late to adventure into the city, but we went to a nearby restaurant and very much enjoyed our first taste of this new country's food. The next morning we left to take a train into the city centre, and one of the first things we noticed was the abundance of bicycles. There are bicycles everywhere and also separate roads for the bikes. Very efficient, but this makes driving vehicles a bit more challenging. We walked from the train station to the meeting point for a walking tour of Amsterdam. Our young guide knew a lot about the founding and development of the city, of historical figures, ... read more

For the next adventure, we stayed at an apartment in the picturesque village of Bernkastel-Kues. The village itself is on the Mosel River and seems to be a magnet for tourists and retirees. The first night, we wandered into the village and discovered a band playing in the centre town square. They were belting out english tunes and the crowd was really enjoying it, as we did. The next day, we hit the road to go to one of the most well preserved castles in Germany - Eltz Castle. This is one of the few castles that was not destroyed since the various sections were built. It was beautiful and the hiking in the area was well marked and provided good exercise and views. The path led us next to Trier. A great historical location, we ... read more

Europe » Belgium » East Flanders » Gent July 28th 2014

We didn't want to miss the opportunity to experience more history on our trip. We stayed in a scenic village near the city of Gent, where our B&B hosts started things off on a high note by offering everyone local beverages, Dad indulged himself in some local brew. Everyone enjoyed this introduction to the new country. After our introductions we had a nice dinner in the city of Gent but wanted to get a good nights sleep after the long day of travel. After waking up and enjoying a nice breakfast and garden tour, we made our way to the Flanders Fields Museum in the historic town of Ypres. The museum was a wealth of information not only about the battle of Ypres but the whole of World War I. On top of this, you were ... read more

Europe » France » Alsace » Strasbourg July 23rd 2014

Strasbourg has lots of interesting things going on. The city is in France, but central in Europe and close to the borders of Germany, and Switzerland. It is the host city to the European Parliament. Many of the street signs and buildings are labelled in different languages because of the city's changing ownership between countries. Our day in Strasbourg started with a climb of the 332 steps of the Strasbourg Cathedral. It was tiring, but the view atop the heavily buttressed roof, was lovely - and worth it. We experienced the rest of the city in a new way, via a tour boat. It started in the canal in the centre of town and bought us by many buildings where historical events had happened to shape the city. The canal continued in a circle around the ... read more

The drive from Alice Bel Colle was as beautiful as the trip there through the Alps. We arrived at our next apartment in Geneva. In the evening, we met a student living in the apartments that was working on his doctorate at CERN. Pretty cool. The next morning, we awoke, packed and headed over to the exhibits at CERN (CERN is an international gathering of scientists and the largest particle accelerator in the world where they discovered the particle responsible for gravity!). Dad was quite excited by the whole thing, comparable to a child on Christmas morning. The exhibit was interesting too. There were live experiments, explanations, pieces of the historical accelerators as well as parts of the actual accelerators and detectors on display. The visual experience in the globe exhibition area explained about what they ... read more

Europe » Italy » Piedmont » Alessandria July 20th 2014

The trip from Lyon to Italy was breath-taking. We drove through valleys, seeing mountains all around us, some still snow-capped. The journey also took us through the less scenic, but none the less impressive tunnels that went through the mountains, the longest being 13 km long. The last leg of the journey took us on narrow and winding roads, with many inclines and declines, through acres and acres of vineyards. The village of Alice Bel Colle was beautiful. A small village of 700 people that must all work on the vineyards (except for the Hotel workers of course). In the middle of town, there is a lookout situated on top of the stores of the central area of town. From there you can see for miles in any direction over the rolling hills of vineyards (see ... read more

Europe » France » Rhône-Alpes » Lyon July 17th 2014

This was a big day of driving, almost clear across France. The only highlight being a small side trip for mom and dad, to visit the Moncontour winery in Vouvray where one of their favourite wines comes from. After a full twelve hour day of driving with a few stops along the way, we arrived in the second largest city in all of France, Lyon.... read more

The next morning, we were ready to embark on the next leg of our journey with our own set of wheels, a Volkswagen minivan. After a day filled with relaxation and lots of travel we arrived in our next destination, Caen. With an early start to the day, we set off to one of the destinations on our must see list, Juno Beach. It felt like we had one foot back home when we entered the Beach's visitor centre. The museum itself was interesting and informative, we learned a lot. After participating in a guided tour of the bunker and stronghold on the site and walking the sands of Juno Beach, we were all humbled by what had occurred on that beach just 70 years before. When we pulled up to our home for the night, ... read more

Tired after our busy day before, we woke up too late for breakfast! Thankfully, the kind English inkeeper offered us some bacon sandwiches. Mmmmm. After eating, we headed out to the village where the bubonic plague was stopped, Eyam. We toured the museum and learned much about the plague, its origins, how it spread, and some amusing "cures", such as putting a shaved pigeon on infected areas. We then departed for Finmere, a small, quaint village, seeming to include merely a few houses, a pub and a school. Upon our arrival at the McFord House, we were warmly greeted by one of our friends, and then got right back into action. At this point the men took to a bike ride of over 40 km, while the ladies went to a nearby antique store, both parties ... read more
