General info: Currency: British Pound Cost of living: My first visit to the country of Loch Ness monster and kilts (mens skirts). Glasgow welcomed me with typical British Islands weather. Gloomy, chilly, constantly raining. Even though I did not give up my plan to see the city. Some of the attractions were located in walking distance from the hotel. In the company of lovely Ukrainin girl met on the flight, we went out the same evening after arrival. We walked along the river heading to Clyde Arc. That eye catching construction is one of the local landmarks. On our way we could see also interesting bridges, The Squiggly and The Kingstone. As well we found very nice italian restaurant called The Rotunda, so we came in for a dinner and deserved glass of wine. The next ... read more

Glasgow, Scotland…another Ancestral Homeland-Campbell’s We decided to strike out on our own today in this land of Scottish accents. Last night, we listened to a really nice port lecturer from Scotland but could barely understand what he was saying, although it was clearly in English ;-) The ship tied up at the Port of Greenock and we thought we would walk 20 minutes to take a train into Glasgow, about 45 minutes away. When we got into the cruise terminal, we saw some cruise passengers talking to a bus company. Turns out that there was a public bus was leaving in just 10 minutes and the bus stop was only a 5 minute walk away. So, off on another unplanned adventure! This turned out to be a great decision. As we quickly walked out into the ... read more

Following on from my blog of 2 days ago. Hi from Glasgow but more from there later. I need to finish Passau and move onto the beautiful town of Cresy Kumlov in the Czech Republic. We left Passau on Monday morning after enjoying our time in Passau, finishing of with a very successful shopping trip to the Brax store were I managed to get a couple of things that I have been after. They make some very good jeans etc.. We also had a very nice evening with a number of people from the boat trip, enjoying an evening meal with great conversation and great food. We are hoping to catch up with Karen and John in England, time permitting, but will certainly keep in touch. So, to the town of Cresy Kumlov, about a 2 ... read more

Hello everyone! I hope you're all having a fabulous week and preparing lots of fun activities for the holiday weekend. It will be odd not really celebrating the 4th this year, but I will get to spend my weekend in the highlands so I won't complain. This week has been a bit of an emotional roller coaster due to some health complications with my dad back home, but I take comfort in knowing that all is well and he is being well taken care of. I have been ordered by my dad to enjoy my trip. Alright, if I absolutely have to. It's hard to believe that the third week of my trip is already coming to a close and that at the end of next week, the group of block 2 students will be joining ... read more

Rather than writing too much this time about the history of all the locations we visited, whenever possible I've included links that you can follow to learn more about the various places if you want to do that. The ferry to Scotland is not too far from us, in the town of Larne. We had some difficulty finding a taxi that would take us to Larne early Monday morning. I had to call five different companies on Sunday before finding one in Larne, of the few that was open and willing to start work early enough on Monday to pick us up at 7:00AM. He arrived 20 minutes late, after phoning me twice, having difficulty finding us. Our cottage sits right on the edge of Garron road which is the coast road from Larne all the ... read more

On a Cold, windy morning in January, we start loading charlie the clio with all our wordly possessions for our last road trip to Dover, across France and onto our final destination of Spain! I’ve decided to take charge of the tetris-style car packing so everything fits in properly (and I don’t trust Greg to do it) as at this moment I am slightly concerned how optimistic we are about how much a Renault clio can hold. It’s all going quite well until it starts torrentially raining (with a sprinkle of hailstones chucked in for good measure) meaning I get completely soaked – I’m sooooo glad I bothered to straighten my hair this morning. Lo and behold as soon as I finish packing the car, the rain stops. Weather 1, Nikki 0. Apparently our friends have ... read more

After the struggle of packing everything, not only for home, but also for a two week European vacation, I was finally ready to head to the hotel. I took a cab to the hotel, and struggled to push my suitcases into the hotel. Since the room wasn’t ready yet, I had them hold my bags for me and I headed to the airport to meet the family. After waiting a bit since their flight was delayed and, as I would later learn, their bags were on the wrong flight, I finally saw them coming out of the baggage claim area. It was so great to see everyone, and we were all ready to head to the hotel. We took a taxi to the hotel and headed up to get situated in our rooms. We then had ... read more

The holiday season, for me, began officially on the 4th of December after I sat for the general GRE Exam and found out that I passed! Ashlee, Sabrina, Belinda, Henriette and I went out for a nice dinner at Wetherspoon's Hengler's Circus to celebrate. Afterwards, Ashlee and I decided to go to the 78 for another drink, before retiring to our respective rooms to work on essays and studying for exams. Since I had an exam towards the end of the first week of exams, I decided to wait and travel after my exam so that I could devote more time to studying and writing essays. This worked out quite well, since we were able to do a lot of exploring around Glasgow and partake in some fun holiday activities! Friday, December 5 - This evening, ... read more

The city of Glasgow has brought us many things; famous actors and TV personalities such as Ewan McGregor, Gerard Butler, Billy Connolly, James McAvoy and Gordon Ramsay; famous musicians and bands such as Belle & Sebastian, Franz Ferdinand, Mark Knopfler, Travis and er, Wet Wet Wet; the 2014 Commonwealth Games; and an outstanding contribution to football which includes Celtic and Rangers football clubs, Sir Alex Ferguson, Kenny Dalglish, Jock Stein and er, David Moyes. Having gifted the world with such cultural and sporting prowess as well as being the biggest city in Scotland - a city famous for its urban, industrial grit, in contrast to the beautiful, peaceful nature of the Highlands - Glasgow demanded a visit. Back in Edinburgh, my tour of the Highlands had come to an end and the group and I were ... read more

On Thursday, after returning back from Lisbon, I made preparations for the Halloween party that would be taking place at the GUU. I was planning on going as Harry Potter, so I ordered a cloak, tie, wand and glasses to complete the look. I was going with Ashlee, who was dressed as Velma from Scooby Doo and Sabrina, who was dressed as Mary Poppins. We met up with some other friends from our block to have a few drinks before heading to the party. When we arrived at the union, it was much more crowded than we had previously expected, so we ended up waiting in the queue for a while before we were able to get in. Once we got in, it was so crowded you could barely move, but we made it to the ... read more
