On Thursday, after returning back from Lisbon, I made preparations for the Halloween party that would be taking place at the GUU. I was planning on going as Harry Potter, so I ordered a cloak, tie, wand and glasses to complete the look. I was going with Ashlee, who was dressed as Velma from Scooby Doo and Sabrina, who was dressed as Mary Poppins. We met up with some other friends from our block to have a few drinks before heading to the party. When we arrived at the union, it was much more crowded than we had previously expected, so we ended up waiting in the queue for a while before we were able to get in. Once we got in, it was so crowded you could barely move, but we made it to the dance floor. The heat pervaded the room to the point it was almost uncomfortable. We did not last too long due to the heat, crowd and the fact that the music was not that great. We were hoping for some fun songs to dance or sing along to, but instead it was a lot of electric music that was hard to dance to. We decided
to cut our losses and head out.
The next day, after sleeping in, in the evening was the Monster Dash, a 5K run that was sponsored by the sports association. After walking about an hour to get to the location, we purchased our head torches (the run was in the dark) and got ready to start. The premise was that people would jump out at you in costume and try to scare you. There was one leader who was in costume who we were supposed to chase throughout the race, and one who was chasing us in order to keep the pace moving. There were quite a few obstacles around the course, and it was quite hilly. I was doing pretty well until I accidentally made a wrong turn and ended up doing part of the course twice, at which point I sort of lost my motivation. But, I was able to finish, and was quite proud of that accomplishment. At the end, there was a slip and slide down a hill that marked the finish line. It was a good idea in the moment and was a lot of fun when I was sliding down, but was not
quite as fun when I was making the hour long walk home with wet pants. All in all, it was a fun Halloween evening.
The rest of that weekend was devoted to finishing my papers that were due Monday and Tuesday. After we submitted our Scottish Enlightenment papers, a group from our class decided to go out for a drink in order to celebrate. I decided to join them, because I had finished my theatre studies paper a day early so I did not have to worry about finishing that one that evening.
On Wednesday, it was Guy Fawkes' Day (November 5). We went to the Glasgow Greens, where they had a fair set up before the fireworks were to take place. A few of the girls who went with us did a few of the rides, but they were a bit overpriced so we decided not to do any. We then got in our places for the fireworks, had our "picnic" dinner and then got ready for the works to begin. The show was super hero themed, which was interesting because I expected it to be patriotic music, but the show was incredible. All of the songs were perfectly matched to the fireworks, and the show was a whopping 20 minutes long! After the fireworks, Sabrina, Ashlee and I headed back to the flat and had some chips and watched V for Vendetta, the perfect movie for the evening.
