Note: Since I've become lazy with blogging due to internet troubles and how much cooler going out and experiencing things in Glasgow are than sitting in my room hooked to a computer, this blog will cease to be in any particular order. King Tut's Wah Wah Hut looks like any of the apartments surrounding it from the outside. The sign is easy to miss, and though it boasts itself as the "UK's best live music venue," it is certainly a very humble looking establishment. Walking down a flight of stairs to enter below street level, you walk into a bar, a small amount of tables for the food they presumable serve during the day, and a pool table. The real magic happens when you walk through the bar room to the back where there are the ... read more

Authentic folk Scottish jam session, right in my own backyard! On Monday and Thursday evening, The Islay Inn, a traditional rustic inn reminiscent of the days when travelers rested from their long foot-journeys, hosts a "Music Session". This is no ordinary garage band 4-piece jam hour. Fiddlers, guitarists, floutists, and musicians of all sorts and ages gathered to play traditional Scottish tunes and enjoy their Guinness. It was a great pleasure to watch as people came together, greeted each other, and shared in their communal love of great music. Songs that everyone knew began and shanty tunes and sing-a-longs, and the band, which grew to about 30 by the end of the night, would jam each one out until I felt like I was back in the 18th century, and would all come together in the ... read more

September 9th - 12th -- Glasgow & Bishopton Another train ride from Inverness to Glasgow and then onto the small community of Bishopton. I tried valiantly to keep my eyes open on this ride. Inverness is in the Highlands of Scotland surrounded by large hills covered in green grass, trees, shrubs and purple heather. There are waterfalls, bogs and of course, scores of sheep. The constant mist punctuated by sunlight makes this the perfect spot for painters (or photographers). After another “travel adventure” (read: not what we were planning), we finally arrived at the most delightful B&B. The Miller’s Guest house dates from the 1700’s and was originally a stable courtyard. It is in the countryside a few miles outside of Bishopton. There are only two guest rooms and we were the only ones visiting at ... read more

When they say the party at Glasgow never stops, they really mean it. Most of the places I've seen close at 3 am every night but Sunday, and cars and taxis are busy all night. An excellent center to have a great time any night is Ashton Lane. A small cobbled walkthrough, Ashton has restaurants, pubs, clubs, and theaters from head to toe. So far I've tried lunch at Mimmo's, an Italian style bistro, and Jinty McGuinty's. Mimmo's food was excellent, the prawn salad was creamy but tasty, and the pork sausages, as the waiter's request, were full of flavor and truly delicious. The waiter may have been a tad sluggish and...thirsty, but he was kind enough to invite us to his "party for charity" he was throwing later that night. I'll leave that story for ... read more

Looking over at the clock on my Mac Thursday morning as I woke up, I saw the time read 8:34 am. Hmmm, I thought, that means... OH MAN IT'S 1:34 PM! I have never experienced jetlag before, but I guess that long night sleep was necessary. Getting the most out of what I had left of the day was a must, so after a quick bowl of Crunchy Nut cereal, Lauren and I headed for Glasgow Center to see the haps. What I noticed, even as I took my first walk through the neighborhood, was how populated the streets were, and how many businesses were so densely packed in. Everywhere in all directions were food shops of all different cultures, restaurants, pubs, barbershops, pawn shops, theaters, galleries, everything. And this is only in the local West ... read more

Welcome to Glasgow! The journey here was a good one. With a final co-family dinner in Boston's North End, Lauren and I were wished luck and given some last hugs from the grievous parents. Don't worry, Ma! I'll be home before Christmas! But now, it's off to the U.K.! American Airlines provided a decent flight to London's Heathrow. We took off right at 11 pm, the TV-style dinner was stomachable and the in-flight movie, Win Win with Paul Giamatti and Jeffery Tambor, was not terrible. Watching the the sun rise from above the clouds was a beautiful experience, and just as the blazing orange sky was turning into the day's brilliant blue, we were landing in London. In an effort to make the flight to Glasgow, leaving only an hour and a half from our landing ... read more

Tina writes Seeing the world has always been my dream in life but a dream I thought was unachievable and only for the rich. In 2004 I accidently came across a travel blog. This blog inspired me, I didn’t really know that kind of travel was possible or as simple. However, money was still an issue and I never really thought I would ever have the kind of money needed to do such a trip. In 2009, I started a new job and I discovered one of my colleagues had done a gap year and I realised from then that all I had to do was start saving. And that’s what I did. It took 2 years and Rob’s redundancy, but here we are and ready to go! Over the past 2 years I have researched ... read more

Next two days are mainly travel days as we make our way from Skye to Glasgow and then onto Ireland so wont be too much to report, will still provide daily update though. SKYE TO GLASGOW Today we left Skye and headed down to Glasgow – back to the big smoke. On the way we stopped for a couple of photo opportunities – beautiful Scottish scenery – and we saw plenty today. Our first stop was at Eilean Donan Castle which sits on a small outcrop just inland from Skye, it is a magnifificent setting overlooking a loch. The castle is often used in promotional material for Scotland, with its perfect setting you can see why. We travelled through some more spectacular Scottish countyside and stopped for lunch at the lake (loch) side town of Port ... read more

Yesterday July 20th early train again .The 7.35 from Conolly Dublin to Belfast,in Belfast the ferry to Scotland and there a connecting train to Glasgow central. Arrived at Maclays Guesthouse end of the afternoon. The Guesthouse is quite big , 6 connecting houses with about 60 rooms.Found out during breakfast that I increase the average age by approx 1 Year to probably 24 years. However it s quiet but unfortunately no beer. In the center is a shop showing old sewingmachines of the type my mother used 50 years ago. A quick count, about 1000 on display. Took the hop on hop off sightseeing tour this morning and saved £ 2.-- by being a sr. Went in the afternoon to New Lanark about 1 hour from Glasgow. And again a saving of £ 1,50 by being ... read more
