An Englishman, born in Worcester but living in Glasgow Scotland, I'm now 65 years old. A time served engineer, I have done more different jobs than I care to think about! Currently I drive a private hire taxi and run a part-time motorcycle spares business.

In 1975 I bought a motorcycle. Not just any motorcycle, but the heaviest, second fastest and perhaps the most technically advanced motorcycle the world had seen. This was the Honda Goldwing GL1000.
I only had it a short time when my first child came along, with the result that motorcycling came to a halt for the next 30 years as the family grew, jobs changed and life took it's course.

In 2007 I bought another; this was not your pristine, carefully looked after classic, more a mobile heap of scrap. No matter, the aim was to restore it and get it back on the road looking the way it should look. I could do the majority of the work myself courtesy of my engineering background.
During this extensive period, I joined various forums in the search for parts and information. The main one catering for these ancient dinosaurs is the Naked Goldwing Club (www.ngwclub.com) and I have really made a home, and a whole lot of friends, on that forum.

One of these, Doug Snavely, since become my best friend and business partner, convinced me to go to the States in 2009 to ride the Tail of the Dragon in the Smoky Mountains. We didn't make it to that part of the country during the 2500 miles we did then, but I went back in 2010 and rode about 3000 miles which included the T.o.t.D. several times.
We had talked about doing a big trip, but when the economy went down the toilet it seemed that was a pipe dream (well, 15000 miles and a four month trip probably was a pipe dream!).
This trip, the subject of this blog, is somewhat shorter in time, miles and money but we hope will still be an amazing experience.

We arrived in Chicago to pick up bike today. Massive crate that we required help from the guys in the warehouse to dismantle. Little damage after it's long sea journey; a small hole in the one side of the saddle and some condensation in the instruments. Then I realised that I had not brought the key! A call went out to the forum members for a complete lock and key set if anyone was close. Al came 50 miles to bring one, good guy! We still had to destroy the lock that stopped us putting fuel in. Stopped overnight and fitted lock etc next day. We both spent over an hour, along with help from the warehouse mechanic, to find out why there was no electrics, before we realised that the kill switch on the handlebars ... read more

Doug and I went to Gilmore Motor Museum for their annual Vintage bike show. http://www.gilmorecarmuseum.org/index.php Wow, what a place! We got there early, nice day but with the forecast for rain later. Not many bikes at this point so I got my first taste of the quality and standard of presentation by going onto the Ford building. Yeah, that's right! A separate building housing just old Fords! And many other buildings dedicated to one make. I had been told that the museum had many barns. Well, these were barns in the same way as a $5million condo is a house! More on the cars later. With the showground filling up, we made for the custom bike area to meet up with some of the guys from NGW. There were three members bikes entered,: Greg with the ... read more

Having had major computer problems and even more major bike shipping problems, maybe this blog can now continue now I have at last got the laptop working.. Utter and complete incompetence from all involved in the shipping of the bike has meant that we still don't have it. We have been lied to, misled, misinformed, overcharged and given the run-around by just about everyone involved from Vanguard Logistics and Profreight. Our trip arrangements are in total disarray now. Months in the planning, thousands of pounds spent on what should have been the trip of a lifetime, all ruined by companies that simply couldn't care less! Supposedly we will be able to pick it up in Chicago on Wednesday 12th june, a week late, (actually it will be two weeks late since they did not get it ... read more

Getting close now! Bags are finally packed; I've got far too much stuff jammed into them! You can bet that I won't need half of it, but it's a bit difficult to know what to take with me. The range of temperatures we will encounter over the eight weeks range from around 32F in June at the top of the mountains to probably at least 90F by the time we hit the Mid Ohio racecourse in July! The wind chill needs to be factored in when deciding what needs to be worn on the cold rides. My riding suit has got full removable padded inserts, which add a lot of bulk to the suit when trying to pack jacket and trousers into a bag. Plus helmet, two pairs of gloves (summer weight and full waterproof type ... read more

This blog will attempt to cover the trip that my best friend and co-conspirator Doug, who lives in Muskegon Michigan, and I are embarking on around the USA. Not having done anything in the way of blogging before and being brand new to Travelblog, I am still finding my way around here so bear with me. This should have been started many weeks ago when we first began the planning of our adventure but lack of time, lack of knowledge etc. means that it starts almost at the day I get on the plane to the States. Just a quick bit of background on the two of us. I live in Scotland, a 65 year old taxi driver. My best friend Doug is retired (to an extent!) and we run a part time web-based parts business ... read more
