So, this year I've decided I deserve some vacation :) Not knowing exactly where I want to go or what I want to do except travel around and do what I feel like for a while, I bought a one-way ticket to London a few weeks ago. The rough plan is to leave for London on friday the 15'th of July, spend the weekend there and probably go somewhere south the next week. Either by train (Dover-Calais) to Paris, or some flight down towards the Riviera. I wasn't too happy about what happened in London today, lets just hope nothing more happens and I don't have to pick somewhere else to go, that would be just great... the only destination I have booked and they blow it up :( If I arrive at London ok I'll ... read more

Sorry about the last entry... I thought I'd posted it last Friday, but it turns out that I didn't.. oops! The Swedish people here at work like to discuss the differences in our languages... In our conversations, I've come across a few words that seem to be lacking in Canadian english (or at least as far as I can tell)... I've decided to incorporate them into my vocabulary: 1) spinky - they thought this was an english word! It means someone who is super thin. 2) tränningsvark - a single word to express the muscle pain you feel the day after exercising (when you're out of shape) - I told them we didn't have a word for this cuz us Canadians are all in excellent shape. (haha) 3) canon - said like canoon... means excellent or ... read more

Motorhome News from Europe 25. Sweden 28th June 2005 Heading north along the Baltic coast The eight hotels in the small town of Tallberg (pop 400) on Lake Siljan fill up with tourists each year for the few weeks of summer. Even the Japanese come here on their four day tour of Europe we’re told! Hans Christian Andersen came here once too, in 1850 (did he come by horse-drawn carriage?). It was his record of the beautiful hilltop views across the lake and the charismatic traditional dwellings that put the village on the map - though it’s my belief that it comes nowhere near Stow-on-the Wold or Bourton-on-the-Water in the Cotswolds! Nice though, and the craft workshops were fascinating. They were busy cutting the grass and dressing the Mid-Summer pole for this weekend’s celebrations. Bright red ... read more

Ah, the cool breeze that hit us when we got off the plane in Stockholm made us feel at home right away. All the coniferous trees, lakes and familiar wildflowers that we saw a few minutes later just confirmed our feeling that Canada was somewhere right around the corner. Not that any of us was really homesick, it was just that it felt so energizing to unexpectedly feel at home so quickly. Landed in Stockholm on June 22 via Frankfurt, Germany. The flight from Hong Kong was fine and the hop from Frankfurt was spartan but speedy. We were whisked away by our friends Roy and Suzanne Widjedal to their summer home on the Baltic Sea. After a great Swedish meal (the first of many) we toured the town of Trosa and the Waldorf school en ... read more

Went to the post office today to have my passport sent to the Indonesian Embassy per recorded delivery. Well, it is not exactly a post office, seeing as Posten AB went cheap and had these services taken over by ambitious merchants in a vain hope to cut costs, and the store owners no doubt hoping to attract more customers to their grocery stores and newspaper stands. Having had some unique experiences with the former postal agent I was a bit concerned about sending my passport per an outift that had recently taken over the honourable mail service only a few weeks ago. It all went through in the end, although it took several attempts to get the proper postage cost calculated. The guy at the counter then carefully drowned the stamps in water before attempting to ... read more

I guess everyone is out celebrating today... In honour of Canada Day, I made a strawberry cheesecake and brought it into work. So, know that a small group of Swedish people are also celebrating Canada Day! I just wanted to quickly sum up what I did this week (and basically post some pictures). Monday - after work, Linn and I went into the old town of Stockholm. Beautiful medieval architecture and narrow stone roads... Tuesday - Anders (Ylva's Dad) and his wife Eva came over for dinner. Really cool man... he told me some interesting stories about the family (apparently Uncle Eric has always been into fast cars!). Also watched this show on TV called 'Allsång på Skansen'... which is basically a big sing-a-long... Thousands of people go to a park and sing-a-long to old songs ... read more

Tradition overload. I was bombarded with Swedish stereotypes this weekend! Midsummer is a Swedish pagan festival to celebrate the longest day of the year and the beginning of summer. Traffic is horrendous as everyone evacuates the cities for the country (prefereably near water). Linn and I drove to Uppsala on Thursday night (that's where she goes to school and has her apartment) after standing in lines at the grocery store and the liquor store. We went for a long walk through the woods in Uppsala to collect wildflowers to make our crowns. The crowns are made of birch branches and you tie the flowers on with string. Friday we picked up Linn's friend Stella and drove to a camp ground (with really cute cabins) near Gävle. We had lunch around 1:00. It consisted of: meatballs, potatoes, ... read more

Motorhome News from Europe 24. Sweden June 2005 Goteborg (taking the time to smell the roses), to Stockholm and beyond Gothenborg, as we know it, is one of those places you pass through when you arrive in Sweden by ferry; but we had been led to believe there is more to this western port. The city was just a fifteen minute tram ride from our camp and with the promise of a bright sunny day, we set forth to find out more. In Swedish, Goteborg is pronounced; ‘Yut-te-boy’ apparently, so you might guess that we are going to struggle just a wee bit with the language. That’s only a minor problem for seasoned travellers like us of course, particularly, as in Norway, the younger locals all speak good English! There are not a lot of ‘sights’ ... read more

I've been asked by the people in the lab where I work to bring in some Canadian music to play in the lab... Wasn't too smart in my packing and didn't think to bring any... SO... It would be great if you guys could e-mail me your favourite Canadian song (does not have to be traditional... Tragically Hip, Sarah Mc (sp?), etc, although maybe a few traditional ones would be good too - Rankin Family??). Yesterday one of the guys at work held a self-defense class... Turns out he's on the Swedish National Tae-Kwon-Do Team. It ended up being a 3 hour hard core work-out! Needless to say, I'm a little bit sore today, and I have a few blisters on my knuckles. But, I can now defend myself against any attackers (all these Scandinavians with ... read more

Phew... It's been a whirlwind! I arrived on Saturday after 13 hours of traveling. You may think Paris is an exciting city, but definitely NOT when you spend 4 hours in the airport!! Sunday we woke up early and went for a trip on Ylva and Tommy's (my hosts - Linn's parents) boat. It is a large yacht moored about 5-10 minutes drive from their house (see pictures). We went over to Bengt's house at 2:00pm to celebrate Amanda's (Bengt's eldest daughter - she turned 17) and Staffan's (Linn's brother - turned 21) birthdays. Most of the family was there... It was nice to see them all again (see pictures). Today is my first day of work at KTH. The facilities are amazing! Clean, extremely up-to-date technologically! They have a very large throughput so they have ... read more
