Today is my first full day in Sweden. I was awake at 5 am Swedish time, but slept well through the night. I'm still lying here in bed listening to music and some thoughts are coming to me so I decided to write them down. I've decided that the best attitude I can have about this trip is to embrace it and not fight it. Ever since Jessica came into my life I knew that this trip would be inevitable and I think that thought has potentially stolen some of my excitement about being here.... read more

A classmate from the program in Lithuania and I choose to spend the Valentines Day weekend in Scandinavia, and concluded our 4 day stay in Sweden. We flew from Malmo in the south, and split up to find our separate ways in Stockholm. Lodging that the legendary sail boat hostel was too rich for our blood, so we walked across the city to another floating hostel, the Gustaf af Klint. Ha, and those snobs at the sail boat thought their hostel was so special because it floated. Well, we got a private room for less! It pays to shop around, and walk in the cold while you are hungry. Of special enjoyment in Stockholm was the Army Museum and Royal Palace. The art gallery was interesting, and in a really nice location if you were seeing ... read more

The Kungligga Slottet is located on Stadsholmen in Gamla Stan, next to Sweden's parliament. It is the largest royal castle in the world still used for its original purpose (the official residence of the Swedish monarch). We saw the Palace twice, one time without and one time with the changing of the Guards. The changing itself was quite impressive. It took about 20 minutes. Definitely a must-see.... read more

I always said I wanted to see an ice-hockey game, if I had the opportunity one day... So when we booked our trip to Stockholm, I did a little search on the internet and was happy to find out that there was going to be a match on one of the days we were in Stockholm. So when we arrived, we immediately bought two tickets. The game itself was part of the "SUPERALLSVENSKAN 2004" and was between HIF and Vasteras. In Sweden ice-hockey is the second biggest sport after football. A very fast and aggressive sport. It was even too fast for me to be able to take some good pictures ;-). We got value for our money, we saw 3 times 20 minutes, afterwards 5 minutes extra and we even saw penalty shots.... read more

Vasa is a Swedish warship that sank after sailing less than 2 km on her maiden voyage in 1628. The ship with 64 guns and about 300 soldiers was created to defeat the Polish enemy. The ship itself was salvaged in 1964. At the museum you can see the ship at scale 1:10 and a reconstruction (video) of how they took the ship out of the water and reconstructed it. Apparently it was broken in more than 14000 individual pieces. The light level -as expected- is low. There are also strict controls on humidity and temperature to protect the ship. The ship and museum itself is really impressive. When we were there, we participated a guide tour (in English) which was pretty good! There is also a bookshop and a restaurant. Definitely a place to go. ... read more

When we heard about Skansen, we thought immediately at Bokrijk, which is also an open-air museum, but located in Belgium. Though we had never visited Bokrijk, we thought it would me very similar. Apparently Skansen was the world's first open-air museum, founded in 1891, located on the island Djurfgafden. Purpose of the museum was to let the visitors see how Swedes lived in ancient times, before the industrial revolution. Here you can find about 150 traditional houses. It's a kind of "Sweden in miniature". Besides a museum, there is also a zoo where you can see al lot of Scandinavian animals, such as moose, seals and otters, bears, reindeer, wolves,... It was nice for us to see the animals in the snow. At the top of the Bredablick Tower, you can enjoy the great view while ... read more

Though it might sound funny, we were very happy being in Stockholm in wintertime. The snow and frozen rivers gave a special effect to the city. Indeed it was cold, but not too cold, although we have to admit that we drunk a lot off hot chocolate milks ;-) We also took several times the metro. Some of the underground stations were nice decorated. Stockholm is a really nice place to stroll around. The fact that it there are several islands made it very attractive for us. It seems that every island has it own character. We especially liked Gamla Stan, full with colourful houses. There you can see also really nice telephone cabins. Something that also looked typically were the "korv kiosks", where you can buy hot sausages. We found them at nearly every corner ... read more
