Take-off We're all packed, according to our packing lists. Zak, who has a fetish for making small kits, has organized a small emergency medical kit (10 X 12 X 4cm), a SAS-styled survival kit, a sewing kit, and small lightweight pieces of equipment like small Swiss army knives, which come in handy throughout the trip.... Day 1 (4th Dec.) We said goodbye to KLIA at exactly 0850 hours. The Boeing 777 took approximately half a day to transport us from the capital of our beloved homeland to the Kingdom of Sweden. Upon our arrival to Arlanda airport, we glanced out of the tiny airplane windows and saw patches of white dotting the countryside around the airstrip. It certainly was a sight to behold, as the probability of snow falling in Malaysia is a big, round zero!.As we disembarked the plane, the cold outside seeped through the terminal intersections making us aware of the winter weather ,so much for a arrival surprise !!. We were then greeted by a representative from the Malaysian Embassy, who had prepared two luxurious taxis to ferry us to Accome Apartments, which would be our temporary home ... read more

Left Stockholm about 10:00AM. Beautiful country as we travelled along. Took a picture at the end of one lake from the train window. This is the lake where Aflo is at the other end. Aflo is the place where my grandfather Per Ljung was born. When he came to Canada he was known as Peter Young. It was very special to me to be in the area of my ancestors. Need to go back for more info about Stockholm. When got to the temple about a half hour train ride, we went directly to the guest house. We quickly changed our clothes and headed over to the temple. After we dessed in our white clothes a sister came up to us and said there would be no 6:00 PM session. It was the Russian week at ... read more

Much to catch up. Took a tour in Amsterdam to cheese farm (gouda) and where they make wooden shoes. Saw windmills, took pictures and bought some post cards. And then canal tour. Rode a night train from Diusberg Germany to Copenhagen...sheats did not even recline so we go a bunk, and at least could lay down. Slept some, but not a lot. Went to the Botanical garden in Copenhagen, and then to Temple and temple housing. Had made a brand new chapel, with housing on third floor, and turned the old chapel (church owned property since 1930´s I was told, and took out the inside and made a beautiful temple). Very impressed with the trains here. Clocks and a 'moving' board to tell which train is coming and in how many minutes. Left the housing early ... read more

Georgina says: It was so neat to ride on the train through the area where my Kortzman ancestors came from as we headed from Copenhagen to Stockholm this morning. The country side is so beautiful with trees, fields and lakes. We are just rolling along by pulling our bigger pack and putting the small one on our back. Have not lost any wheels yet. Joyce is doing most of our entries.... read more

Following up from my French tip 3 of us housemates decided to fly over for our beloved ex-housemates birthday in her hometown. Getting ready for a trip with friends/housemates to see a mutual friend/ex-housemate is such a nice thing to do. Drove everyone up to Stanstead in thick fog in the early hours then got our Ryanair flight to Veristas, followed by a bus into Stockholm. After dumping our stuff at our friends apartment we took a ferry out to the archipelago for swimming and sunbathing as we were lucky enough to visit during a heatwave with temperatures actually hitting 30C which is not really what we expected on a Baltic trip. Later on we did the Swedish thing of drinking at home then going out later to save on the high alcohol costs. Enjoyed meeting ... read more

Well, time to get this going again. We returned from Europe the end of July, after flying back to Sweden for Kristina’s wedding; the main reason we flew over 6,000 miles to begin with. Marie, from Quebec, also flew out for the wedding and we had plenty of time to visit with her. What made this even extra special was the fact that it was exactly 10 years ago that both she and Kristina came to California as exchange students and became good friends; we toasted the event with French and Canadian wine at a lovely dinner held at Kristina’s place where we sampled moose (cooked 2 different ways). The wedding was one of the most beautiful and special that we have ever attended. We ferried out to a resort island off the Swedish coast and ... read more

We were in Amsterdam for 3 days and stayed very busy seeing the sights and trying to get rid of our jet lag. We next flew to Gothenberg Sweden to visit with our very first exchange student, Kristina who lives with her fiance, Urban. She won’t get married until late in July but we wanted to be able to spend time with here before she had to put her full attention on preparing for the wedding. So we planned to visit early in the month travel around Europe and then return for the wedding. Before we had arrived Kristina has planned our entire visit for us. She had bought a city pass for us which gave us all the museum entries and transport we could cram into one day. When we arrived she gave us a ... read more

Nya Ullevi, Gothenburg, Sweden. Largest arena in the country. The arena that back in 1985 literally caved for Bruce Springsteen. The crowd back then got excited and carried away to the extent that they rocked the foundation of the building until it cracked. No injuries or such, but they decided to close the arena for concerts. Nowadays it’s improved and enhanced, and again open for big concerts. Paul McCartney puts on one of those big shows that requires a stadium of this size. The arena is not completely filled despite the big name and a beautiful summer day, but still around 40,000 people have decided to come see the ex-Beatle perform. Three hours after the announced starting time of the concert Paul enters the stage. Performs some of his known songs, some less known songs. Even ... read more

Today is my first full day in Sweden. I was awake at 5 am Swedish time, but slept well through the night. I'm still lying here in bed listening to music and some thoughts are coming to me so I decided to write them down. I've decided that the best attitude I can have about this trip is to embrace it and not fight it. Ever since Jessica came into my life I knew that this trip would be inevitable and I think that thought has potentially stolen some of my excitement about being here.... read more
