I stayed so many times in Malmo, I decided to stay an hour or so north for a change. October 2004, I was there for 6 days including a weekend. Cool little village, Kristianstad. Small shopping area, about 4 major street with small businesses. I stayed in refurbed hotel called KristianIV. Beautiful hotel, I found it on the internet, reasonably priced and outstanding rooms with like 14 foot ceilings. I had a grea time there. The weekend stay I emailed a local ham radio guy and there was a radio club event that weekend. It's was the greatest! I spent part of Saturday with their club operating a radio contest and part of Sunday. Very nice people let me full use of their club house. I had a rental car and flew in/out of Copenhagen. I ... read more

I was working in Gothenburg at the time when I by blind luck happened to come across a note about a planned visit by the HMS Endeavour. It was announced on the website of the Swedish East Indiaman project, which is tracking the progress of the rebuilding of a replica of the 18th century merchantman Götheborg, a ship that used to ply the trade to South East Asia back in the day. Götheborg met an unfortunate ending when she - after two years of travel - ran aground just outside Gothenburg harbour in 1745, its precious cargo lost in the waves. More than 250 years later a project was started to rebuild a replica of this famous ship. At the time of my visit the ship is slowly nearing completion, and is planned to take a ... read more

The setting is perfect for a Sunday night beer. The heart of the Södermalm island in Stockholm, Medborgarplatsen (The Citizens' Place), certainly invites to enjoying a cold one among friends on a warm summer evening. The outdoor restaurant is sparingly populated, and the atmosphere is very calm and relaxed. Yet, my buddy was brutally terrorized by security. Oh, well, maybe not molested in the most violent sense, but yet a reminder of the pathetic attitude of the bouncing profession in Sweden. From hearsay, the conversation went something like this: BUDDY to bartender: "A beer please". Enter Amir. AMIR: "I'm Amir, head of security at this place". BUDDY: "Ok...nice". Exit Buddy. Gaining respect and showing who's in charge appears to be important to restaurant security guards on a power trip. Apparently they don't realize the comedic and ... read more

At first sight the guy seems rather normal. After having released a few incomprehensible murmurs, this perception is radically altered. Before having even landed his butt on the seat, he has initiated the dead-end conversation. Conversations with the train/plane/bus neighbor can be quite interesting and kill some serious time. This guy is a one of those one-way streeters. To his defense could be mentioned a slight mental sub-normality. He mumbles a big deal in super-standard Swedish. Not at all easy to grasp. He's going home to Stockholm. The cats in Malmö were apparently quite messy. He's retired, although in his 30's. Retired from what...? With great enthusiasm and excitement he describes the characters, plot, and relationships of the fantasy cassette book he's "reading". Light bla bla Dragons bla bla White guardians bla bla Black tower...But the ... read more

Lisa Nilsson is one of the most well established, recognized, not to mention popular Swedish artists. The Swedish queen of soul. Not necessarily my kind of music. But she can - unarguably - sing. And since the concert is in my city...and for free...what the hell...? She does her thing: the hit songs mixed with some rather uninteresting, deep monologue. A solid performance. It is towards the end of the concert she drops the bomb; she describes one of her greatest hits something like "you know when you go to a party, and the only reason you go is because the host promised you your favorite song...a whore song - something you as the host feel obliged to do, although you don't really want to...but at least you can vary it, perform it with a single ... read more

Watch a pride parade just for fun? I'm not homophobic, but a bunch of fairies in extravagant costumes strutting around in the middle of Stockholm trying to make a politically correct point, but probably just adding to the stereotypes of homosexuals...? Well, as my buddy and also host thinks this is a good idea, I won't argue. Turns out my prejudiced ideas were a bit skewed. It's not like any other parade, that it ain't. The gay movement is strongly associated with the rainbow flag, and the colorfulness is reflected in the floats and costumes. Magnificently ornamented floats are mixed with groups making a statement and other less political groups dancing and flirting with the crowd. But, all the people participating in the parade are obviously having fun, a joy that is widely infecting the crowd. ... read more

What am I doing now? This is trip is the first step on my next adventure - teaching English in China. First of all, I visited the Skane area of Sweden, as my longtime friend was in the sailing and had arrived before me. I spent the first day catching up on jet lag, unpacking and then going to the sailing site to meet Robert. As you may know, he was sailing in the 43rd World Snipe Sailing Championships in Landskrona, Sweden. Landskrona is just across the Oresund from Copenhagen and only 1.5 hours by direct train from the airport and is very easy to get to. The European train system is amazing. Once you have been in Sweden a few days, it also fairly easy to read their menus - thank goodness. There is a ... read more

So I find myself, a budget traveller in one of the most expensive regions in the world, Scandinavia. I have been putting most purchases on my credit card and not thinking about the cost. Ok I have been thinking about the cost, £100 from Copenhagen to Stockholm!!! Yikes. I have adjusted my European travel plans now to basically loop down Eastern Europe where its cheap over to somewhere like Greece and then relax for a bit somewhere coastal. But in the meantime I'm a reluctant Scandinavian traveller. Enjoying myself immensely. Did my usual trick of arriving late and finding all the close hostels full, had to go for a cheaper one on the outskirts of the city centre. The STF Backpackers Inn is another converted school, this time the beds are placed in the classrooms, 14 ... read more

I spent a little more than 3 weeks in the southern coastal city of Malmo, Sweden's second largest city. There's two major squares here, "Big Square" and "Little Square (Lille Torg)". In big square there's much parking and shops, little square has all the restaurants and bars. Fun place, Sushi, Thai, Steaks, etc...YUM! There's a beach area on the eastern part of the city, but I was there April-May and it was a bit cold for the beach. I stayed in the Radisson in old town, "Gamla Stan" and it's a good place to stay. I preferred this as it was walking distance to most locations, you don't want to have cocktails and drive; Sweden is very strict in that way! The Hilton is further north in the cosmopoitan part of the city and closer to ... read more

I spent a week and a half in Uppsala, a large University city. The students must have been on break cause the place was dead. I mean like nobody around at all. I stayed at the Radisson and had a good time despite no real activity. I got to know Stefan and Noha, bar tenders at the Radisson.. They were good people offering suggestions on things to do while I was stuck there between work. They made my experience in Uppsala very good. I had since been back there one other time and Stefan and Noha remembered me ;)... read more
