I have a little bit of time before lunch today, so I get to write another installment. I just got back from an exhilirating 4K run. The first half is completely uphill, and since it’s an out-and-back type of run, the second half is almost entirely downhill. Interesting story #3 (I think. I've lost count of how many): About 30 seconds into the second half of the run it started to pour. It was amazing. As cliché as it sounds, I felt completely alive. The way rain looks as it falls on nearby mountains is indescribable. Anyway, I got back to Il Granello entirely soaked. The first words Elisa and Romano said to me were “docia calda”, “hot shower”. That kind of exemplifies the mood here. Everyone has so much care and tenderness for each other. ... read more

Ciao a tutti! (Hi everyone!) This entry will be short because the computer at this farm is slow, and they pay internet per minute, not a flat rate. I love it here! I am in the middle of the mountains in the middle of nowhere. There are 9 people living on the farm currently: Elisa and Romano (the owners), Lorenzo, Alice, and Gabriele, their children, Claudia and Michael (WWOOFers from Switzerland), Arnt (a WWOOFer from Norway), and me. So far, I have planted fennel and mint, cut back invading mint plants, potted mint plants, weeded, and made dirt from compost. I discovered that I love the smell of dirt. I also love the smell of all the herbs we grow here. Too many to name. I am learning Italian and it is going pretty well. I ... read more

And wouldn't you know it I never even had a plate of spaghetti here! I did however stay with my very first Couch Surfing host Fabrizio for 2 days. It's a strange feeling staying in someone elses house, especially when they have housemates. It was great to have locals to talk to though (believe it or not I haven't actually met many Italians on this trip!). I spent the first day exploring the city (Fabrizio wasn't feeling very well so he didn't join me). I went to the Basilica San Petronia and they had some highly decorated and golen display goblets with bits of bones or teeth in them. It was a bit gruesome actually because the bones looked hideous against all the decoration around them. It turns out they are body parts from various saints! ... read more

Day 519 (12/9/09) Steps 14123 Sitting eagerly by the laptop at 6am, we were shattered when neither radio station/s could be streamed over the internet. The lack of mobile reception added to our frustration when we tried to phone home (via skype) to get a score update. Disappointed we went back to sleep for a couple hours... to await the results. Which were disappointing Tarra failing to go through undefeated and mixed feelings with Beechworths lose to Tallangatta. We tucked into a late breaky and caught the train back to Florence. We stored our bags and roamed aimlessly through the flea markets making our way up to Michelangelo's Piazza for some magnificant views of arguably Italy's most beautiful city. We soaked up the atmosphere watching the hoards of tourists come and go, three brides pose for ... read more

Ciao a tutti! Spero che non siate morti a causa dell'inverno o dei drop bears. So I find myself sitting in a little shared room on Via degli Angeli at 4am and I begin to ponder the vagaries of life... Just kidding, I'm not going to bore you with my philosophical meanderings, but rather will share some of the fun and funny stuff I've been up to. But bear in mind it is 4am so if it doesn't make sense, not my fault. So, finally arrived and settled into Bologna. Bologna is quite an adorable town really. Its like someone forgot to tell them that the medieval period ended a few years ago - there are miles of porticos, random little shops, and most importantly, a huge number of coffee, pizza, gelati and wine venues. We ... read more

We have arrived back to Bolonga, all of us feeling a little crispy... After spending 3 straight days on the beautiful beaches of Sardina our skin is showing the affects of the sun. Even after taking turns rubbing sunscreen on each other not one of us escaped a burn... but it was totally worth it: We left Civittaveccnia at 10:00pm and slept on the boat arriving in Sardina the next morning From there we took a bus into the main city and then cabbed it to a little camp ground about 15mins away where we rented 2 trailers for a couple of nights. upon arriving we all changed into our bathing suits and walked down to the ocean only 10mins from the park where we spent the rest of the afternoon. the following morning we made ... read more

So my family left from Venice today while I continued on to my last adventure of my journey, Bologna. Situated between Venezia and Roma I had to make a pit stop in this medieval city known for their great food. To name a few good foods making this region known for the best food in Italy and possibly the world: Bologna, Prosciutto, Parmesan Cheese, Tortellini, and Balsamic Vinegar. I’ll get into the food more a little later. First and foremost, Bologna is a very old town and is home to the first university ever and continues to be a town dominated by a youthful college atmosphere despite the buildings dating from the 12th century. Getting off the train it started to rain but lucky for me Bologna has arcaded sidewalks that not only set a neat ... read more

I know I'm supposed to be forward looking on the trip - but I really miss Edinburgh! I met so many great people and did so many cool things! Oh well...onwards and upwards! I'm in Bologna right now, and I actually have seen quite a bit of the central area. There is a really interesting market right now in one of the squares. One booth had only things in purple! I would have shopped a bit, but I had my backpack on. Italy is very different. First of all - I'm not freezing (like last night) -- its absolutely beautiful! There is barely any wind. Also, I seriously have no idea how to communicate. I get super confused with all my different languages! Its really pretty though! Last night the ghost tour was so much fun. ... read more

After spending another night at Marco's, we headed south with him to Bologna for the day. As he went to the airport to head off to Poland for the Easter holiday, we explored the town. This town was full of arcaded streets that we wandered down continuously. One of the main attractions for us was the famous bolognese pasta sauce that was discovered in this little quaint town. We are definitely pasta lovers and it was well worth the visit! During our day trip, we went to visit Piazza Maggiore, which was a common gathering place for many people. Here we saw the beautiful Neptune's Fountain. We also explored two leaning towers, Due Torri. We spent the rest of our time walking around town and taking in all the beautiful streets, buildings and unique cuisine. ... read more
