Bologna On Saturday, we all decided to head to another small city outside of Florence, Bologna. It took us about an hour to get there, which wasn't bad at all. Everyone was exhausted since we got up nice and early, so they all slept in the car. I did all the driving, so I couldn't though. No big deal. Anyway, the drive there was so beautiful, that I wouldn't have been able to sleep even if I wanted to. For once it wasn't raining! We finally got to enjoy a beautiful Italian day without rain. It was actually super nice out, sunny, clear skies, everything you could want. --- Oh, I forgot to mention that we went to bed at 4:30am and woke up at 9:30am! We didn't do anything crazy the night before, but we ... read more

Due to extreme economic conditions Caterpillar has decided to move us (and many other international families) home early. Kristi and I have started to schedule our move back to Minneapolis. Our last week in Italy will be the week of January 26th. Most likely we will be flying home on January 30th. At this time we haven't finalized all of the details, we just received the notification on January 5th. Hopefully by the end of this week we will have more concrete plans. Even though we are moving home early we have met new friends, learned about a culture vastly different from our own, explored many new cities along our travels and enjoyed the food immensely. While we only have 17 days left in Bologna we have a couple more adventures remaining. This weekend Kristi's Mom ... read more

Josh and Ashley's last full day in Bologna we decided to explore Bologna. We slept in a little and walked into the center. Ashley's goal was to have gelato for breakfast so we headed straight to our favorite gelateria Gianni's. The weather warmed up a little so it wasn't too cold for gelato. We walked around Piazza Maggiore and towards the area of the University of Bologna. It is one of the oldest Universities in Europe. The buildings are spread out through the city though, there isn't a real distinct campus. We walked to the area of 7 churches and then went on a search for a bank that would cash Josh's traveler's checks! No luck, the take home message is to not bring traveler's checks to Italy! In Bologna there are 2 towers and the ... read more

We have spent the last five days in Italy, starting off with two days in Venice. Being the only pedestrian city in the world, we had to park our car outside Venice and catch a ferry boat to our hotel. It is such an amazing experience to ride through the tiny streets and under quant bridges through the city. For all its beauty and unique atmosphere, the downside to Venice is the high expense (not unlike the rest of Italy). For example a McDonald's meal (small size) costs 7.95 euros, which is approximately $AU16! Also on our first night in Venice we had dinner at a really nice traditional Italian restaurant and thought nothing of having a small dinner roll from the basket on the table. On receiving the bill, we found that we had been ... read more

After last night I was afraid I might not be alive to write this., but thankfully I am because it has been a very exciting few days. I had my first Italian Oral exam on Thursday (grammatica latina) which went really well despite the circumstances. I found out at 19h the night before that the date was no longer on Friday, but in fact Tomorrow, at 9 o’clock, and I had been planning to have a whole other day for revision and getting over my cold. It was because there was another general strike on the Friday; i think maybe the 10th in so many weeks! So in the end I went to the exam very tired, feeling a little under-prepared and a bit ill. However these things don’t seem to matter in Italy and it ... read more

The time is flying and I have only five days until my exam and only 11 until I come home! Amongst much diligent revision *ahem* it has been a lovely week. The highlight had to be Tuesday night, when forty nine erasmus students and I were driven by private bus into the hills to an ice rink surrounded by pine trees with a roof of wood and sides open to the night. The trip was organised by Aegee Bologna, and there was vin brule (mulled wine) and lots of prizes. Over the course of the evening my partner manuel and I won best couples dancing on ice twice out of two times (prosecco), and then I won a ski trip. I have not suddenly and miraculously become an ice-skating extrodinare, was just lucky enough to have ... read more

Today I took a day trip to Bologna. It was an interesting city but I don't like it as much as I like Florence. It was really cool to see the huge overhangs on almost every building and so you can virtually walk anywhere you want without getting wet in the rain. I really enjoyed walking through the historic center and up the Asinelli Tower.... read more
