This time I really have so much to say, as due to computer problems (again, *sigh*) I havent had the chance to write for a long time. Lots has happened, many more strikes, both transport and university. I've decided that i need them though, especially the odd university strike, in order to be able to make it to the rest of my 24 hours of lectures each week. Recently I have been spending a lot of time with Italians. The very glamorous Italians everyone thinks Italy is full of: artists, photographers and the models (although sadly no fashion designers as yet). I've been delighted to discover, however, that they are suprisingly unpretentious and extremely nice. Last week I accompanied Edie to Silvia's studio (Silvia is a friend of francesco and professional photographer) because she had requested ... read more

LAMBO TORNA IN STRADA...

Halloween- We spent the weekend in Torino, and met a lot of people's friends who were in town for the weekend. Brad from Santa Barbara's friend Derek is studying in Barcelona, so he is going to take me around when I am in Madrid for thanksgiving! Free tour guide! And he speaks spanish and the specific Madrid dialect as well as I speak Italian. Everything was closed on Saturday, since it was All Saints Day and is nationally observed. We stayed in and watched movies in our pajamas, while it rained all day! I love to do that! November 7-November 8-- That weekend, Jess, Carolyn, Tricia, Inhye and I hopped a 3 hour train to Bologna on Friday. For those of you who don't know, Bologna is famous for tortellini, lasagna, and Ragù sauce. So of ... read more

Last Sunday Jason and I took an afternoon trip to Dozza to visit the castle and do a little wine tasting (Jason)! Right outside Bologna is a little town called Dozza with a 12th century castle that has a cellar full of wine and wine tasting. We took a tour of the castle and saw the town that also is full of full bright wall paintings. There is a big festival every other year where the paintings are changed on the outside walls of the buildings. Also we've included some pictures of our attempt to make Italian pizza at home. The toppings tasted great but we have some work to do on getting the crust so it's not dough on the bottom and burned on the edges! We'll try again! Next weekend we're off to visit ... read more

So Kristi and I made our second trip to Dr. Stefania Tabanelli. Our appointment was at 9:30 am, after 2 hours of waiting we had our 12 week baby ultrasound. All is great! The heartbeat is strong and the growth is progressing nicely. Each month Kristi will be required to have an ultrasound and blood work. Talking to some of my co-workers it seems like Italian healthcare is crazy about bloodwork. I (Jason) even had to give blood last week, not sure why but I am officially HIV negative (for those that are curious). We are very excited! Due date May 12th, 2009. E un Bambino (It's a boy)! Ciao Kristi and Jason ... read more

22nd October Trieste - Venice Got up bright and early this morning and headed for Venice. We decided to stay off the motorway so we could see more of Italy. That was our first mistake. These roads - it would seem take you through every industrial zone at 70km an hour. Then you also get the luxury of driving with people who only need 50m visibility to pass. Our second mistake was after taking 1hour to travel 40kms we decided to try our luck on the motorway. We have never seen so many trucks in our lives. It was share madness - rows and rows of huge trucks going 60km in one lane and cars doing about 140kms in the other lane. The scenery was n’t any better either. It is unfortunate that Venice is now ... read more

The last few days at university have been slightly crazy. On more than one occasion I have almost had to fight my way down via Zamboni to actually get to class. Both university students and high-school pupils have been engaged in some earnest protesting. I find myself walking to the heavy beats of drums, through flailing banners and marching students, many clutching beer bottles, and in my imagination, rocks. And all that at ten o’ clock in the morning! The protests haven’t exactly prevented lectures from happening, but they have given rise to some detailed digressions. On Wednesday I arrived at my Greek lecture well prepared for tackling some Aeschylus. The other students arrived slightly late and a little flustered. The professor arrived as usual, and started talking about the protest. I wasn’t listening very carefully ... read more

I came up with this hypothesis in my seminario di greco yesterday afternoon, when i was staring , mesmerised, as one of the boys in the front row, perched keenly on the edge of his seat, hanging on every word the professor said, continually ran the metal ball from his tongue piercing in a gliding motion across his lips. I just about managed to tear my eyes away for long enough to notice he also had one eyebrow and one ear pierced and perhaps resembled the punkabestia slightly more than the others. I looked at the other students in the front row, almost all boys, almost all liberally pierced, frowning beneath their floppy raven hair at a blackboard speckled with digammas. It is not usual for Italian students to call out in lectures, however, aforementioned boy ... read more

I have had a really lovely weekend, a mixture of delicious dinners out with my parents who are visiting, and a fantastic, (if a little drunken) friday night out with two of my flatmates and my lovely friends. The club we went to on Friday was called Covo, and although we went a very round about way of getting there, it was most definitely worth it. I had aperitivo and dinner with my parents, with a strong mojito followed by desert wine. I then went back home and bumped into Francesco who said "Ciao! Hatty, io e alcuni amici e anche sergio usciamo a covo club, vieni con noi!" and i replied that we had planned to go to Villa Serena for the Erasmus party, but I didnt mind and i would ask my friends because ... read more
