Once again, I'm writing this in the future, but i really want to try and remember the highlights "for posterity" (as Pliny would say). Not that I am like Pliny, god forbid no. The best thing that has happened to me in Bologna so far was meeting two of the most wonderful girls I have ever known on my second day in our CILTA oral "exam". This exam was actually just a chat with the other students in the class (arent all italian exams?), and it wasnt until afterwards and people were milling around outside that i met Edie and Lotje properly. Edie is German, a law student, and Lotje is Flemish, doing a masters in Ancient History. I could never begin to describe them because it would be impossible to do them justice, i will ... read more

Hello everyone! We are finally here. I arrived on Friday and so far things have been great! Friday and Saturday night we stayed in a hotel in Ferrara because there was no availability in Bologna due to a big Trade Show going on here. We went to a great little restaurant on Friday night in the centre of Ferrara that we just stumbled across because it was hidden called "Osteria della Campana". It had traditional food of the Emilia-Romagna region that we are in. Saturday we decided to adventure into the grocery store and mall to see what we were getting into in our new life here in Italy. Supposedly I'm going to be the cook in our family now so I had to see what I would be buying! All the fresh food was amazing. ... read more

Back Home I am finally back home in Bologna and comfortably settled into my lovely new room in the student residences. I have had an unforgettable summer, three entire months of fantastic adventures from Berlin to Barcelona, Scotland to Sicily, the stunning coast of Croatia to the insane Greek Islands. It was all fabulous, but I love being settled in one place again, not having to live out of a backpack, wear thongs in the shower, spend nights on trains, buses, ferries, train stations, in parks, hostel dorms with weirdos, or hiding in a hostel common room because I haven’t paid for a bed that night. To not have to wonder when your next shower will be or if it is ok to wear the same top four times without washing it, to not have an ... read more

The first stop after check out was one of Lui's most anticipated attractions. The Ducati factory and museum. I finally get to see where my bike was made. yipeee !! I won't bore you with the details that i thoroughly enjoyed, but Dot had a full time job mopping up the pools of drool left over after each section of the tour. After the factory we were shown to the museum and allowed to take photos of some of the historical as well as recent racing bikes. After Dot had gotten Lui's tongue back in his mouth, and coaxed him out of the museum with a Ducati T shirt, we headed north east toward Venice, in our bland little reliable Fiat (no scarf flying in the breeze....) The country side outside Bologna is flat as a ... read more

17 Sept 2008 Today the aim was to visit a mosaic studio southwest of Ravenna called Studio Akomena, then proceed through Faenza to Bologna, ending up with dinner at Bologna. The day started off poorly: we couldn't find the studio despite having reasonably good directions for it, and the Faenza Museum of Ceramics was actually (from our perspective) rather dull. I guess we're not really ceramics people. The small display of new works were quite interesting, but that was at the end of around half an hour of the kids already being bored from the long drive there. So we headed off and down a few blocks, aiming for the central area and some lunch. For some reason we kept striking out today: we struggled to find a 'decent' lunching spot, and eventually got back in ... read more

Well after the longest and worst 2 weeks of our lives (hopefully ever) we had a few days of excitement while we traveled to Bologna, Italy to search for an apartment to rent for our 2 years living there. We flew in on a Thursday and spent Friday looking at 8 apartments. We were pleasantly surprised that we really liked most of them. We went in not knowing what to expect at all. We ended up choosing one that is up on a hill right outside the center of Bologna with an amazing terrace and view. We have included some pictures of the one we chose. We will have plenty of room for visitors so start planning your trips to visit! We will be sending all of our big furniture on a sea shipment on August ... read more

Hot and hungry we headed off on a bus into Bologna to find ourselves a bolognese, forgetting that restaurants close between 3 and 7. We tried in vain to find ourselves some food, grumpily i followed cat down road after road after road after road ... looking for a trattoria, biting my tongue so as not to start our first argument. Beer set me in a much better mood. Thats about all we have to say for here, it was a pointless hot and hungry stop... ... read more

From Trogir we sailed through the mostly uninhabited Kornati Islands visiting Kakan, Zut, and Iz on our way back to Zadar. The weather was mixed but we did manage to play with the blister for a few hours and keep the engine hours to a minimum. The water is warming by mid-June (23 degrees C) and swimming off the back of the boat and sunbathing au naturel is common in Crotia. Croatia is crazy about soccer and, in addition to eliminating England in the preliminary rounds to Euro 2008, they now are top of their pool. HD big screen tv's are to be found everywhere including the smallest of bars. We watched Croatia defeat Germany 2-1 in a small bar in Iz much to the bewilderment of the mostly German audience. On Saturday we returned Zweigelt ... read more

We made some amazing distance today. From Ponte St Martin (in Valle De Aosta) to Castello St Pietro (just beyond Bologna). The ride was fine at first, via Alessandria rather than Milan, I had been warned about motorways near Milan, best avoided. From Alessandria towards Bologna, 2 lanes at first, light traffic, 120kmph, Slowly more motorways feed in, 3 lanes, 90kmph, then from Parma, 4 lanes and 60kmph. Plus accidents, zero kmph for bits, some nastily trashed trucks, but it looked like dazed truckers rather than anything worse, cannot be sure of course. Motorway code in Italy. Truckers, 90 to 100 kmph, predictable, though some need to take breaks earlier. Car drivers, the busier the motorway the more crazy they act. When the car drivers are at their worst the best plan is to join the ... read more

Farewell Home Sweet Home I sadly have less than a month left in my lovely house with Maggie, Giulia, Denise and Mattia, due to the return of Giovanna, whose room I was renting for five months while she was in Brazil. Although living with Italians has been hard at times (having to dodge around awkward issues such as the presence of the bidet, and the fact that they think I should be arrested for wearing my Havaianas as much as I do) I really couldn’t have wished for a better home. We have had a hilarious time teaching each other important aspects of our respective cultures. For example the girls are now versed in important Australian slang such as “bogan”, “dunno” and “budgie-smugglers”, meanwhile I can swear fluently in Italian at any football player who misses ... read more
