So, perhaps the coolest part about ECCo is that we get cooking lessons from this ridiculously amazing woman. If i had enough money i would take lessons from her for the rest of the semester. 2 weeks ago we had our cooking "presentation" with her. Which basically means that we assumed meant she might show us how to make cookies and that would be the end of it. however, silly us, it meant that she was showing us how to cook like a four course meal. polenta with ragu, some tomato beef stew thing with peas that was excellent, tiramisu and biscotti, etc. it was fabulous. rita= goddess. last week started our actual cooking lessons. we made two desserts--a raisin muffin thing and a to-die-for apple cake. i need to learn how to make that cake, ... read more

So I don't know how many of you have heard of the Flashmob phenomena. Basically it's a group of people who gather in public places and do this "spontaneous" coordinated dances. We saw one today. Except in Bologna it cannot be called anything synonomous to spontaneous. Walking through the market, Greg called us to tell us that there was a flash mob happening a few blocks down. We quickly head over to see where it was because, really, how often do you see a flashmob? by the time we get there though the flash mob had ended but a cop told us another one would be starting in 15 minutes. well. 15 minutes was more like 1 hour. but at 2:05 the flashmob once again started. they danced to a bunch of songs, all synchronized with ... read more

So we have not hidden away from the nightlife in Bologna. Naps are a popular afternoon pasttime due to this. However, in my trips to clubs I have learned a negative (to me) fact about Italian club music. The vast majority of it is techno. with no words. yeah. not really working for me. after a couple of songs of techno i need something with words (doesnt even have to be american or english songs) or I get way too bored. there is only so long you can legitmately listen to techno without getting bored. well, perhaps i am the only one who feels that way. but dear italian djs, perhaps after ever 3 or 4 (or 5, or 6) techno songs, one song that isnt would be great. thanks!... read more

So Bologna has this great things all over the place. i believe they are called porticos. but they're basically ceilings over the sidewalks. I guess it rains here often, so this was brilliant idea of the engineers of Bologna back in the day. Apparently it was too hard of a concept in the United States...but i feel like Bucknell could seriously benefit from these. Not only are they useful, but a large majority of them are absolutely beautiful. They ceilings are all decorated, and the majority of the sidewalks themselves are mosaics. When I get home and go to New York it is going to be sad to see plain concrete sidewalks. But this is a charming aspect of Bologna that I greatly appreciate. Good thinking.... read more

Ok. So far this blog has been a fail. i keep starting it, and then something happens to my internet and it completely takes everything away because i keep forgetting to save it. maybe just after each sentence i should hit save. i have been in bologna exactly two weeks. we left the united states on thursday january 7 and arrived here friday morning january 8. we arrived in bologna to a dreary, gray, raining morning which certainly didn't help our jet lag. barely anyone got any sleep on the plane. we were herded onto a bus. we were headed for two dorms--ghigi first and then forni. the large majority of our group was headed towards ghigi (the coed dorm) while I and three other girls were going to Forni (the all girls dorm). I was, ... read more

So I'm told that Europe is currently undergoing an unusual cold snap and I am taking advantage of the snow in Bologna, the snow has been quite fun actually. As it happens, the last time I was in Bologna it also snowed, I haven't been as cold as I was last time, but then again I actually have a coat this time. I happened to miss the snow in London, which would have been really awesome. Before I left the UK I went to May's (A friend of Alan my cousin) murder mystery birthday party. I hadn't actually been to a murder mystery party before and I hadn't met May before either but it was a pretty rad night. The majority of people there happened to be Chinese-British, which funnily enough happens to be a category ... read more

Well, I'm headed off. It is getting too cold here, and I don't have room for more clothes in my bag even if I bought warmer ones. Anyway, work here slows and then stops in the winter. And the olive harvest is starting further south. So, time for the next part of my adventure. I arrive at my next farm, Azienda Agricola Biologica Millefoglie, on October 31st. Until then, I am making a little tour of cities mid-Italy. First stop, Firenze (Florence in English). After that, I'll be taking the train to Arezzo (I think) and then hiking 20-40 K a day (we'll see how much I can manage with my pack) between some smaller cities. I'm pumped. I'm not sure what kind of communication I'll have, so I may write one summarizing blog thingy at ... read more

Ciao! Wow, nearly time for exams for you guys, and we all know what that means... PROCRASTINATION! So sit back and relax, comfortable in the knowledge you are wasting valuable study time reading this. (I hope it turns out to be more interesting than youtubing Charlie the Unicorn, watching season 3 of Dexter or whatever tickles your fancy to avoid homework...) First of all, I have the sad news that uni finally started for me... For someone with an attention span of an ADHD goldfish, I find normal lectures hard enough. Add in the Italian language aspect and I become like that kid who doesn't have enough vegemite or sultuna bran or something for breakfast and starts seeing scribbles and blobs on the blackboard. So I've been nerding it up (Almost to a Lucas level) reading ... read more
