From Bari to Bologna 10th June to 6th July Stranded on the Amalfi Coast Well stranded may be a bit overzealous, but we were definitely stuck longer than planned. The windy mountain roads and long downhill stints over the last month or so took their toll on the brakes meaning all four pads needed replacing. Not an easy task when on the tip of the outcrop of land that the Amalfi Coast sits on. So if the Mountain won’t come to Mohammed, then the mechanic must go to the campervan. He looked more like a farmer who’d spent his life chewing on unlit cigar stubs and drinking red wine, and his car looked like he’d drank red wine before getting in it but to be fair he managed to source the right parts and come and ... read more

Bologna - A city of porticos In May this year Ake managed to take a few (well deserved) days off from work. He then went to Italy and visited Bologna, Pisa and San Marino. Strictly San Marino isn't Italy. It's in Italy but it isn't Italy. Well, I'll get to that when I write the blog entry on San Marino because that is going to be a separate one. This one is only on Bologna. Bologna is an old historical city. In the city centre there are many palaces and churches dating back from times when Bologna was one of the most important and rich cities in all of what today is Italy. Many of these historical palaces are or have been a part of the University of Bologna. The university dates back to late 11th ... read more

Ten years ago we drove to Florence and have had nightmares ever since. Today, with the help of our on board navigator, leaving Florence in morning rush hour traffic was a breeze. We leave Florence knowing we have seen what we came to see. It was hot and beginning to get crowded but full of excitement and activity. We started our trip by heading for Forli on the eastern side of the mountain range that forms the backbone of Italy. The road zigzagged its way to the summit and down the other side. It was slow going but the scenery was great. Passing signs of “chains to be fitted” and “snow ploughs” gave a hint of what it must be like in the winter. Forli was not really our destination but just somewhere for the GPS ... read more

I thought that I would just do one post for the three days that I just spent in Bologna. There is actually not all that much to do so three days was probably a bit of overkill. In the end, I still managed to fill my day and I certainly did not get bored. It also gave me time to just hang out in the park, read and give myself a much need pedicure/facial!! I also re-read the blog postings that I have done so far. I am starting to realize that I will clearly remember something but I can never seem to remember in what city I was in. It was to be expected I guess!! I arrived on Saturday the 14th and after checking in and unpacking made my way out the door. I ... read more

Monday 14th March to Sunday 17th April 2011. Bologna Monday 14th March 2011 It was raining, so housework day and recuperation for Tom. Tuesday 15th March 2011 Up and into Bologna – with sort of an itinerary – but we both feel great as there is no rush to things. So we wandered to the bike touring club – closed until 6.30pm – so no worries – then went to Ferramenta where went on Saturday looking for some stronger tent pegs, but they didn’t have any, and again they were very helpful to point us in the right direction. The owner recognized us and came up and said hello and shook our hands as if we were old friends. So out we go. At the main centre of town, the Piazza Maggiore, we come across the ... read more

Today is public holiday here for all saints day but lots shops open half day & most importantly, maxs beer shop across the way is open till 8 pm (run by a man of ethnic origin!) We visited the most famous church in bologna called st. petronas, (all the sites r in walking distance.) This church planned to b bigger than st peters at vatican but 169 years after it was started the pope stopped the money on construction and directed it to the university instead-bit unusual eh? It never was finished so not as decorated inside as others but is very large and very gothic in construction. There was a church service going on in the fron t portion & it so big us tourist at back didn't interfere with it at all. The rest ... read more

Last morning in venice again woke early so headed off in different direction where max had ventured the night before in search of some beer. We discovered the main port area and watched 4 cruise ships go right past us as they left venice. On way back to hotel we stopped at a cafe so max could have his cappucino and croissant and saw the monster of all coffee machines mastered by an older man that obviously knew how to make some serious coffee! After brekky we caught a vaporetto for the last time to the train stn. On way we saw 2 ambulances-brenden they had no wheels how u think ... read more

Um bom Menegassi à Itália torna Para um melhor efeito, leiam o diálogo seguinte em voz alta e com intensa gesticulação: “- Buongiorno! Come sta? - Bene, grazie! E tu? - Molto bene! Io vado in Italia!

So Thursday morning, Des and I took the bus into Wroclaw, then a taxi to the airport, then only an hour flight to Bologna, and lastly another bus from the airport to the city center. We checked into our hotel which was only a block away from the bus stop in the main city square. It was much more of a tourist city and we heard English everywhere which was refreshing. Made our first stop at a restaurant for real Italian pizza!! Then walked around the city for a while and went back to the hotel for an early nights sleep since we were exhausted. Friday morning we got up and went to this awesome bakery where Des got a chocolate filled croissant and I got a sweet croissant, biscotti, and cappuccino. DELICIOSSO!!! Walked around the ... read more
