DAY 10 - Saturday The group has the weekend off from any planned activities or classes and most of the students are going site seeing in other cities. We're going to stick close by and take some time to be by ourselves. Most days we run into someone from our group, on the street or at the hotel. And most days we end up joining someone or multiple someones for dinner, beers at a bar or wine in the lobby. Both of us need some down time in life, to be away from people and in our own private bubble. Saturday morning, sleeping in, there's nothing better! The sun is shining, it's perfectly warm outside and perfectly gorgeous. The air in Parma always smells like green things and vegetation, it's wonderful. Must be because of all ... read more

Being an ancient city, Bologna is a bit underrated as a tourist destination, less than 2 hours from Florence, here you can feel the space, you can see local people live their life in their own way, walk their dog, cafe and restaurant not just crowd of tourists. There are many historic architecture around the old city, although most are not with exaggerate decorate like those in Florence, perhaps it was a plain answer to the Renaissance - simple is also good! And it does add an air of medieval tone for all the sight in Bologna, Beside the many great museum, the main sight in town sure is the Two Towers, it is the symbol of Bologna, stood right in the center, at the intersection of the roads that lead to 5 gates of the old ... read more

Hello my fellow travellers! After a night of unfortunately somewhat poor sleep (due to the heavy traffic) I headed out into Bologna again. I left my bags at Giorgio since he was be working from home today so I could return and pick them up before I went to the train station. My first target for today was the Church of Saint Mary of Life to see these terracotta statues that Giorgio mentioned. On the way though I decided to finally visit the Basilica of Saint Francis, it's been closed for me twice now, third time is the charm! And indeed it was, I finally got to visit it and I enjoyed it (not as grand as the other basilicas but still nice enough). I then made my way over to the Church of Saint Mary ... read more

Hello my fellow travellers! This morning, after a brief sleep at my friend Marcus in Malmö, I took an early flight to a sunny and warm Bologna. The flight went smoothly but the buses kind of caused a bit of an issue today. First was the airport bus from Bologna Airport to Bologna Train Station, the first ticket machine didn't work with VISA card and the bus couldn't accept it straight on the bus. Fortunately for me there was a few more machines located inside the terminal building and one of them worked with VISA. Once I had gotten to the train station I ran into the same problem, neither the ticket machine nor any shops accepted VISA so I had to track down an ATM and withdraw cash but then only even change was accepted ... read more

The Fountain of Neptune is one of Bologna most known attractions. I see lots of people admiring it, taking pictures of it, listening to their guides, reading about it, as real tourists do. It is a a very unusual monument presenting, in addition to naked giant Neptune, some sexy nymphs. From Wiki: Its bronze figure of Neptune, extending his reach in a lordly gesture of stilling and controlling the waters, is an early work by Giambologna, completed about 1567. Recently I see that less and less people take pictures from the right location, representing Neptune's story: The s... read more

My father is using a wheelchair and is also an independent and VERY active traveler. If you are interested in information about travelling with a wheelchair in Switzerland (Luzern area), Australia, the Netherlands, Italy (Rome and Florence), Germany (Frankfurt), Australia, New Zealand, Hong kong and Israel, Please PM me. This time we went to Bologna, Italy together, for a friends and family visit. This is going to be an informative blog for independent travelers with emphasis on wheelchair accessibility (I won't get into the technical details of flights with wheelchairs). I will not (as I'm yet unable to) share how sentimental, emotional this visit was, how intensive and great. My parents lived in Bologna in the late 60's, met there, I was born there and my parents stayed in touch with some good friends that were ... read more

You’ll remember my posts from 2013 when within one month I decided to visit Hungary and Italy. Scorching hot yet laced with the winds of change that were to reveal themselves through the months that were to come. And so this year, when life found me visiting those same two countries again, amidst a mild European winter, I reflect on just how much has happened since my last visit. My inner journey has taken me farther than any passport ever will and for that I am grateful. First stop: Italy. A place so passionate about food will never fail to lure me to its land over and over. So this time I went to Bologna, armed with a couple of foodie friends and carefully drawn out maps marking the best eateries in the city. I also ... read more

So, the last solid thing on my "to-do list" for this trip was to hike in the Cinque Terre on Italy's northwest coast. Last Wednesday, I set out from Pisa to conquer the trails. There are four separate trails connecting the "five lands" and I ambitiously planned to hike them all. However, with a slow start to the day, by the time I got to the northernmost town of Monterosso, it was 2 pm. This timing combined with high heat and some difficult ascents on the first trail left me DONE after those first 3.5 kilometers. But hey, 3.5 difficult, hot kilometers in 1:10 ain't bad! And in that gorgeous setting, every drop of sweat was worth it. So after eating and gelato-ing in town #2 of Vernazza, I hopped on the train and made my ... read more

Our next campsite was high up in the hills between Bologna and Florence. There was nothing around it only hills. We had a large spot with lovely views. We asked about travelling in to Bologna, which we had passed through but never really visited. We were advised that the best way was by train. However, the time to drive to the train was 40 minutes! Off we set for the 11.05 down narrow twisty roads and up and down dale, eventually arriving after 40 minutes as advised. The train was good though and deposited us 10 minutes walk from the centre of town. Bologna is a nice city with lots of nice buildings. In fact everything was nice but nothing great. The highlight was probably the Anatomical University and the 16th century lecture room all in ... read more
