Europe » France » Île-de-France » Paris December 26th 2008

We arrived in Paris on the 22nd of December and experienced our first 'white christmas'. It didn't actually snow, but it was definitely freezing and enjoyable all the same. Arriving after dark on the 22nd, we went late night shopping at Les Galleries Lafayette, an amazing shopping complex spread over three buildings for women, men and homwares (much like Harrods in London). The women's store is every shoppers dream, with a basement floor dedicated to youth fashion, a floor for contemporary fashion and last but not least - a designer floor, home to all the big fashion house names. You could spend hours browsing this floor alone! On the 23rd we did some more shopping on the Avenue des Champs-Élysées, which was walking distance from our hotel and the Arc de Triomphe. img=http://i126.pho... read more

Europe » Italy » Emilia-Romagna » Bologna December 20th 2008

We have spent the last five days in Italy, starting off with two days in Venice. Being the only pedestrian city in the world, we had to park our car outside Venice and catch a ferry boat to our hotel. It is such an amazing experience to ride through the tiny streets and under quant bridges through the city. For all its beauty and unique atmosphere, the downside to Venice is the high expense (not unlike the rest of Italy). For example a McDonald's meal (small size) costs 7.95 euros, which is approximately $AU16! Also on our first night in Venice we had dinner at a really nice traditional Italian restaurant and thought nothing of having a small dinner roll from the basket on the table. On receiving the bill, we found that we had been ... read more

Europe » Austria » Salzburg » Salzburg December 16th 2008

Been in Austria for the last four days. We spent the first two in Innsbruck, which is a town situated amongst the Austrian Alps and offers amazing ski slopes. The setting and landscape was so amazing! Everywhere you looked was so picture-esque and as if straight from a postcard. While in Innsbruck, we visit the Swarovski crystal factory and museum. The museum showcased different crystal world records (the largest crystal, the smallest, the largest crystal wall etc) and every surface and object glittered! The museum also housed artwork from different fashion designers and artist around the world who have used Swarovski crystals in their work. The museum was just amazing and I highly recommend going there! img=http://i126.photobucket.com/albu... read more

Europe » Belgium » West Flanders » Bruges December 12th 2008

On Thursday we took the P&O cargo ship from Dover, England and arrived an hour later in Calais, Paris. We then drove to Bruges in Belgium, which is the best preserved medieval town in Europe. Taking the city bus tour, we explored the many amazing buildings and streets of the old-worldly town. We then made our way to the city center 'markt', where a german-style christmas market was being held. I had a waffle with melted Nutella (o.m.g) and watched the ice-skaters on the outdoor rink. As night fell the town only grew more amazing with christmas lights outlining all the different little buildings and houses. We stayed that night in a hotel in Bruges and the next day visite... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Greater London » London City December 9th 2008

Yesterday we drove up to the north of England and visited the New Forest, which is a reserve of English woodlands for the native wildlife. We drove through the different areas and got out to see the wild horses. One even came up to me for a pat! The woodlands and forest were really beautiful. Even though it's winter and all the leaves have fallen off the trees, all the landscapes are still amazing to see. Then today mum and I went back to London for the day. We visited Hamley's, the second biggest toy store in the world and then back to Harrods for some Christmas shopping. Later in the day I caught up with some of my celebrity friends... img=http://i126.photobucket... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Greater London » London City December 4th 2008

We spent the last three days in London, staying in a hotel in Mayfair. On Monday we arrived in London and took a tour around the city on the hop-on op-off bus. We went on a river cruise down the Thames and stopped off at the Tower Bridge and took the elevator to the top for a night-time view of the city lights. That night we went for dinner at the Hard Rock Cafe, which was the first one ever built. It housed heaps of amazing music memorabilia (Prince's ruffle shirt, Scissor Sisters white wedding dress, Madonna's leather jacket...) and there was even a private concert happening upstairs, with stretch hummers all around the block dropping off their guests to the exclusive red carpet event. The bar was incredible, with huge plasmas and a wall that ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Cambridgeshire » Cambridge November 30th 2008

Yesterday we drove up to Cambridge for the day. The drive took around 2 hours and we got to see miles of english landscape and forests. The day was quite foggy, which added to the mystery and old-worldly feel of Cambridge. We dove pass the impressive entrances of Trinity and Kings College and witnessed the hundreds of students as they biked their way around the campus. We crossed the college's river and explored through the many old buildings and even saw students as they graduated in a Kings College building. We then walked around the streets of Cambridge and explored the many shops and lane-ways. The campus is like a mini city, with its own Marks and Spencers, H&M, Boots and ... read more

We arrived at Heathrow Airport, London at 5am on Wednesday morning. It was 2 degrees when we left the airport and I was absolutely freezing! We were picked up by Rob (a family/work friend) and then driven to our flat in Shoreham by Sea, which is just outside Brighton and a typical English seaside town. The drive was really beautiful, with the passing English landscape and forest setting in the pre-dawn light. After settling into the flat, we went across the road to Sommerfield, which is kind of like Woolworths, except it sells alcohol and you have to pack your own groceries. It was heaps of fun to explore the foreign food products and packaging. Later that day we went for a walk around the little shops and steamy cafés in Shoreham and ... read more
