Capri We boarded the boat at nine and three days later we docked at Capri, or that's what it seemed. We were among the last to board so we sat inside while those who had pushed and shoved sat in the sun. The boat rocked, the people held on, we enjoyed the scenery, the boat rolled, the folk out in the sun on the stern got soaked, we enjoyed the scenery, the boat corkscrewed and people were using the barf bags while we were comfortable with the ride. We took a cab up to Ana Capri where we found nothing but shops. Stopped for a cappuccino to warm up as the wind felt like it came from the North Sea. Not much to see there so we took a cab down to Capri to visit the ... read more

I'm too old for this stuff. Smooth flight on Alitalia with more than a couple screaming children who acted up for hours, literally. The worst airline meal ever served didn't help. Originally had an empty seat next to me but was soon joined by Carol who had issues with her seat mate. We got along well but my fantasy of stretching out disappeared. Some bozo had booked our flight to Naples with an hour in between. We had an escort guide us to the gate which was a good thing because I would never have found it alone. It was over a mile away. Heaving and panting we cleared passport control then boarded a bus that would take us to the plane. Since it was on the tarmac I had to lug my carryon up the ... read more

Italy Day 13, Sunday, October 16, Positano, Amalfi Coast and boat trip, lunch in Scala Today we embarked on a full day bus tour of the Amalfi Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, followed by a trip inland up to Scala and Ravello. Some of us had already visited Positano, seeing that part of the coast and the colorful buildings clinging to the steep hillsides from a local bus, but one visit is not near enough so we are reminded we must to go back and see it again with fresh eyes. Our first stop was on the coast above Positano offering us post card views, and an option to purchase lemons, chili peppers, herbs and lace from the roadside vendors. There is a lot of traffic on this dangerous coastal road offering opportunities for people ... read more

The Carabinieri would not let me drive Skippy to Amalfi. So I took the bus. That gave me a chance to sit back and take in the scenery as well as take some photos as the bus travelled from the city of Sorrento along a spectacularly rocky bit of coast to the holiday village of Amalfi. Why anyone would holiday there I do not know, but if you talk something up enough, then spendthrifts who need to be seen will not be put off by the fact that its half meter wide beach is made of rocks, or its inaccessibility, or its mountain goat trails from accommodation to amenities, or its being overpriced. Amalfi’s one attraction is the ride to get there. Most places in the world where mountains drop vertically into the sea are in ... read more

Today we got picked up by our driver Franco and were taken around the Amalfi Coast. It was beautiful, some of the best views we'll ever see. Our driver was amazing and managed to get around the hairpin corners, overtake buses and when it got really sketchy he had to pull in his wing mirror so he could squeeze past. We went to Positano, Amalfi and Ravello. Positano was beautiful, we had to walk down a bit to get to the beach and it was a pretty expensive place. Amalfi was pretty similar but a bit more busy, we had lunch at a restaurant by the seaside with the amazing blue water like Capri, and Ravello was a nice quiet town up the top of the cliffs where we bought some ceramics (we liked this place ... read more

We got to pretty Amalfi in the afternoon and were very happy with our hotel. I had read a very bad review of the hotel, where someone said it was like an Italian Faulty Towers. It’s not for everyone and if you want four and five star then you have to pay a lot more for it. It was a three-star hotel with a five star view, a bit run down, a bit shabby with its nice, old Mediterranean wooden furniture, a lot of charm, in an amazing spot. We had sea-front rooms with balconies and loads of space. Breakfast wasn’t bad either - big selection of pastries and baked goods, some cheese and salami, good Italian coffee. Amalfi is a small, one street town in the middle of the Amalfi coast at the bottom of ... read more

Pretty as a picture Amalfi. We travelled by bus (one crazy driver) from Praiano to Amalfi on more very winding roads. Amalfi was busier than Positano with more tourists and being a Sunday we ventured a while in the cathedral amidst the lovely sounds of children singing in the service. We left the busy town area to explore an underground river we could hear flowing beneath the streets, to discover the ruins of several old water mills situated above the town, together with a series of waterfalls created both naturally and for the mills and surrounding market gardens. Joan we actually found hellebores in the Wild! The weather turned quite cold today but not freezing. We did a little shopping, drank coffee and had a beautiful lunch - hence the first "food pictures" especially for you ... read more

A very early start today – we were the first group off the ship at 7:00! This tour is mainly a drive along the cost stopping along the way for quick visits before the big tour at Pompeii. Tour guide Angelo and driver Agostino were a great team. Driving skills for this bus driver are unparalled manoeuvering the bus within inches of other vehicles and the walls alongside the road. For a short bit of the ride they allowed me to sit in the jump seat beside the driver. What a treat, a spectacular vista out the front of the bus which provided some great pictures. I also gained a great amount of respect for the abilities of Agostino. The terrain here is extremely steep and yet many houses and villas are carved into the side ... read more

Geo: 40.6344, 14.6026It was time to explore the local town which has a combination of narrow streets, seafront and small squares lined with the usual souvenir shops and restaurants. The ceramics are very pretty and the handbags very nice but not cheap. The Cathedral is reached by climbing some steep steps and is composed of 3 parts, the cloisters, the old cathedral with frescoes and the more modern baroque part. The inlaid marble on the columns was really beautiful and some of the frescoes were really lovely, much nicer than the large dark baroque part. After a beer we bought boat tickets at the information office and sailed round the pretty coast to the Emerald Grotto. There are some amazing buildings perched in impossible places on the steep cliffs. We could have caught a local bus to ... read more

Geo: 40.6387, 14.6003Sight-seeing of a different kind for us today in the form of a hike inland to the Valle delle Ferrier ( valley of the Forges). Walked uphill from Amalfi into the hills via a well marked route consisting of steps and stone paths past remote hilltop houses, lemon groves, medieval foundries and water-powered paper mills (Amalfi was once famous for its paper) We followed the river which was crystal clear and saw lots of waterfalls, some with sluice gates to divert the river. We ventured past the no-entry sign (along with other rebel walkers) to view a protected area of woodland (Reserva Integrale) which has a micro-climate where a particularly rare fern that lived in the ice age still grows with lots of other protected flora and fauna. We then retraced our steps a ... read more
