This will be a short blog because I am tried and just have jetlag. Woke up this morning at 4 am local time and could not go back to sleep. This means we had an early morning to start. Since our Hotel breakfast was not served until 7 am, we went for a walk to check out Sorrento Harbor where usually people take a ferry to Capri Island. We now know where to catch on the ferry to Capri... After breakfast, we went to buy our bus tickets at the train station where we begin our bus trip from Sorrento to Amalfi, then Ravello and finally a stop at Positano on our way back to Sorrento. Which town do we like the most? As for me, I like Positano even though all of the places that ... read more

Another glorious day on the Med and we headed off to Sorrento on the train planning on a short visit then down to Amalfi and then back. Arriving in Sorrento Pam suggested we hop a boat out to the Isle of Capri, the playground of the rich and famous in the know. Sterling idea and we brought return tickets at a cost of 70e, sitting in the café with my morning espresso thinking about the boat trip and we decided to exchange the return tickets for tickets from Capri to Amalfi, great idea, only problem was the trip from to Capri to Amalfi was not till 4.30 and was around an hour and we had to then get a bus from Capri to Sorrento and then train back to Pompeii, not knowing when the bus left ... read more

Today we travelled from Positano to Amalfi and then to Revello. Beautiful coastline and some interesting drving along the way. Weather not as good as yesterday and a little overcast but good nonetheless. Amalfi is a much large town than Positano and is situated at sea level. There was a big cruise ship in port so lots of people around while the tenders were bringing them into the port. Had a nice light lunch at a small cafe - bruscetta and some very nice vini bianco (quite more'ish but we didn't order more). Bus ride to Ravello was quite hairy and the town is high up in the mountain. You can get great ocean views but a looong way away from the town. Around 3:00pm the clouds rolled in to the area - pretty much at ... read more

Ahh... Amalfi. And we thought driving into Sorrento was scary. Imaging hugging a winding mountain road with hairpin turns and cliffside drop-offs straight down to the sea below. We’re grateful to the generations of men who labored to build the rock walls which guard the edge of the roadway. We quickly learned that every half inch counts and folded in our side-view mirrors after a close encounter with an oncoming bus. The coast itself is beautiful. Breathtaking limestone cliffs, lush Mediterranean foliage, and the sporadic Saracen guard towers sprinkled in between offer an unparalleled sight. The coastal town of Amalfi starts at the base of the cliffside. Our arrival time was perfect. We got to sample some of daily life in Amalfi as we walked uphill into the town. We were able to pay our respects ... read more

HE SAID... We woke early (6.30am) to catch up on writing and prepare for our bus trip to Amalfi. We caught a train to Sorrento and then piled into a bus with scores of other tourists sharing the same intent. The journey was reasonably long (1.5 hours) and numbers were high, so many passengers had to stand in the aisles. While the trip was breathtaking, it was also downright scary, and there were times where I couldn’t look as we teetered precariously on sections of road where a knee high fence was the only thing separating us from the sheer drop to the ocean below. We arrived at midday and checked into a fantastic hotel - our room had three balconies that opened directly onto Amalfi’s waterfront. As I stood on one of these I could ... read more

Autumn in Italy. Sounds like a page from 'Under the Tuscan Sun', however, Tuscany was not yet on the itinerary. Glistening sea and staggering cliff sides, twisting turning narrow roads, staircases to the heavens, ancient fishing villages dotting the rocky beaches, terraced villas seemingly suspended in mid-air, this was what we had dreamed of. As we settled in at our new home for the next two weeks, we were astoundingly rewarded with a sunset that blazed in colors of fire reds and pumpkin oranges, fucshia pinks and royal purples. And as the sun melted into the mountains of Capri off in the distance, we opened our second bottle of wine and smiled the smiles of Cheshire cats, pleased, happy, and oh so content. We breathed a sigh of awe and aah - the Amalfi Coast was ... read more

Avid blog readers may recall that in a previous blog we met a couple on a boat in Belize and happened to be staying in the same hotel with them on the beach in Caye Caulker, We met a really lovely Australian/South African couple who told us we should go cenote diving in Mexico.... After having spent the day snorkelling with them and an afternoon chatting we headed out to dinner with Alex, as Bekkie was exhausted and couldn't keep her eyes open. We went to a great little place called Wish Willie's made famous (or infamous) in the book The Full Montezuma by Peter Moore. We sat outside while the guy that ran the bar cooked our US$5 meals, which were really great, Lara even got to have $5 lobster! The next day we went ... read more

Oh my god - i'm so sorry it's been so long since we've last blogged. Things have been happening at a million miles an hour and we're just finishing off Croatia at the moment where we've had no access to the internet for about 8 days because we've been on a sailboat. So i think we were just finished Rome in the last blog and were departing for Pompeii before heading to the Amalfi Coast with Kirra and Lauren to continue our over-spending and under-achieving of anything remotely important! We stopped for the night in Pompeii so we could see the ruined city early in the morning hopefully before the scorching heat kicked in - never going to happen with 3 girls! I can't really speak for Bretto on this one as we were seperated soon ... read more

So I Did!! After seeing the Cote D’Azur in France, I decided that I wanted to see how the Italians do holidays so I made my way a little further South from Naples to the Amalfi Coast. Nearly everyone I’ve met has said that it’s the must see area of Italy so hopes were high for some fun in the sun while being surrounded by beautiful coastline. It didn’t disappoint!! The bus from Salerno to where I was staying hugs the coast, often with shear cliffs falling away to crystal clear water, and takes about an hour to reach Amalfi. I was staying in the village in the next bay, Atrani, which is a little quieter and definitely a lot more local. Nearly everyone was Italian, coming here on holidays to soak up the sun, and ... read more
