Here are some pictures of our Amalfi Coast day. The bus ride was scary at times but I'm glad I did it. If you sit on the right side of the bus, you can see over the edge of the cliffs down to the ocean. We think the bus drivers would go up to speeds of 40 miles an hour. They take up both lanes at times and oncoming traffic has to yield for the buses. The drivers honk when going around blind corners and of course the scooters zoom & weave thru traffic and past the buses. There were several times I thought we would fly over the edge! The Gardens of Villa Cimbrone is the park in Ravello. The land was originally used in late Roman times to produce fine timber for the navy ... read more

Whatever the glitch was it has been taken care of...so now back to the regular programming...er posting :-) 11th day - Tuesday We drove to the Amalfi Coast to take a look around. The weather was dreary, again, and I think it is hard to appreciate the Amalfi Coast when the sun is missing. Nonetheless, we drove into Maiori and stopped to have a looksee and then we ate a swell lunch before driving off again. We drove up to Ravello, looked around a bit and then headed back down the mountain and drove to Amalfi. We wandered around a bit in Amalfi. There were quite a few student groups around and we surmised that the European kids were also on spring break. It started raining again so we decided to cut the visit short and ... read more

Yeah, I broke one of my own rules about staying in one place too long, but this place is TOO wonderful! (I just wrote a wonderful blog about today, only to have it erased by my fat fingers, GRRRR!!!! This will be the short version as I need some sleep!) I woke this morning with a goal in mind. Hike to the top of Mount Vesuvius! I slept in a little later than usual, I think I'm needing the rest! I get a late start, and hop the train for Ercolono Scavi, the closest station to Mount Vesuvio. Ok, it's not a FULL hike, there is a shuttle that will take you most of the way, and then you can hike the final to the crater peak. I board the shuttle with other people speaking something ... read more

We had a lot to do in the five days we had an apartment in Massa Lubrense on the south coast of the Peninsula of Sorrento. This was to be our base to visit Mount Vesuvius and the ruins, the Amalfi Coast and the Island of Capri. The area has a number of villages connected by twisting narrow roads switching back and forth negotiating the steep slopes. Terraced fields held olive, orange and lemon trees as well as many gardens planted in the black earth. Our first venture was the famous Amalfi coast - a series of little villages clinging to sides of very steep rocky mountains plunging to the sea. We had done so much reading ahead of the place it was almost like we had already been there. The road to Positano was stupefying ... read more

I was up at 06:30 after a relatively sleepless night, thanks to a deluge of American exchange students. The ferry to Amalfi left Sorrento at 07:30. With a 40min walk ahead I was cutting it pretty fine. On the way, I realised I needed cash for a ticket. Unfortunately, cashpoints which accept my card are suprisingly hard to come by. Every one I tried returned it - usually after several minutes of whirring and beeping. Stress levels were slowly rising as was my body temprature. 15mins until ferry departure and still had to get cash and descend to the port. I ended up bounding down the stairs like a mountain goat, only to find the ferry was running late - fecking Italians. What a beautiful morning to be on the boat though. Just as we were ... read more

Thursday 28thAugust Rome - Napoli - Amalfi Coast Early Thursday morning we were all up and ready to go at 7.00am - one problem we couldn’t pick up the car till 8.00am. So we all rechecked under our beds, in the bathroom, in our bags to make sure the checking we done 15 minutes earlier hadn’t miraculously changed!! Finally Kurt, my Dad and Joshua left to collect our car. My Mum, Katelyn and I were responsible for taking the suitcases and everything else!!!downstairs via a tiny elevator that we were soooooo grateful to have. Our luggage had amazingly expanded to a total of 15 pieces of luggage (including pack bags and plastic bags with stuff we couldn’t get back into the suitcases) and NOT including 4 boxes of food stuff!!!! We were laughing hysterically as we ... read more

Welcome to the second instalment of the Italian Adventures of Hannahina & Jamesone, as they make their way from Sicily, north through Italy. They’ve made it to Naples and are now spending a few days along the magical Amalfi Coast: swimming, wining and dinning their away into a bit of mid holiday luxury. The adventure continues following their early arrival into Naples from the night train, where Hannahlina & Jamesone decided they had just enough time to check out the Greek temples at Paestum…. The train dropped us off in the middle of nowheresville, with only a poxy map near the station showing us a rough concept of where things might be located. But there’s nothing like a good challenge first thing in the morning! We found the temples, which actually turned out to be the ... read more

Visiting the Amalfi Coast was the best way that we could have spent our official weekend in Italy. Once again we planned the trip through a company called Bus 2 Alps. When booking a trip through the company, all of the arrangements are made for you which takes care of a lot of hassle. They only thing that you have to do is go to the train station at the designated time to meet the bus. On Thursday afternoon, we all packed our bags and then at 7 p.m. headed for the train station. Our tour guide for the trip was named Simon. He’s the owner of the company and from Australia. He reminded me of one of those people who never grow up; he’s 37 years old and travels almost every weekend with college students ... read more

Travelling in Italy is, at the same time, both extremely frustrating and hilarious. Driving on the large freeways that connect the different parts of the Italy is like being a speedway driver in some sort of kamikaze death race. The easiest way that we found to deal with driving was to treat the speed limits as a bare minimum rather than a maximum. On the motorway you can spot the born and bred Italian’s with ease: they will drive for miles straddling 2 lanes, then with indicators constantly on, faster cars will race up behind anyone slower in the fast lane, and sit literally 3ft from the bumper of the car in front. It’s hilarious to watch until it happens to you. The first day was spent driving from Rome to Sorrento, which we managed to ... read more

We arrived in downtown Praiano at the Hotel Margherita yesterday. Internet access has been difficult. TUSCANY Wow, what a place! So many hills, windy roads and beautiful litttle villages. The Chianti area we were in was Radda, the very heart of the Tuscan hills. From our base at Villa Visterinni, we went to places like San Gimiano, Volterra, Pisa, Siena and Florence. Each day, a diferent direction. The architecture and the sheer history is amazing. All places were probably better than expected. Weather wasn't too bad. The windy roads were a good teacher of RHS driving. I know where the Italian Grand Prix drivers practice lol. TIVOLI We drove from Toscana about 300k south and arrived in Tivoli, just outside of Rome and stayed the night there. Tivoli was where the Roman Patricians went to escape ... read more
