Geo: 40.6384, 14.6006Lie in to compensate for our early start yesterday and late breakfast (cold meats, cheeses and yoghurt) before catching the public bus to Ravello, a town in the hills. We decided not to use the car as parking is a huge problem. Being in a bus negotiating hairpin bends gets the adrenalin going but hats off to the coach drivers who I think must have passed a special manoeuvring in a tight space driving test. Ravello is a beautiful town with the now-familiar alleys and steps leading to hidden gardens and restaurants. We visited Villa Rufolo, a 13th century house, important for its architecture, history and gardens (a heritage site) The Ravello festival had just come to an end and men were dismantling the stage which they build every year ( a platform with ... read more

Nalynn and I took a really nice tour of the Amalfi Coast and Pompeii. The ship docked in Naples and the tour was with a van driver and 4 couples. The small group was nice and the tour guide was both a good drive and an informative and entertaining conversationalist. We visited the towns of Positano, Ravallo, and Amalfi. In addition, we spent a god deal of the afternoon at Pompeii which was destroyed by Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. This was the last excursion of 11 day cruise. Nalynn and I get of the ship on the 15th and then will spend 5 days in Rome prior to returning to the US on August 20th.... read more

I woke up to a gorgeous view of the mountains. Campania, unlike Lazio , is a more rural area and not as crowded with tourists. Ernesto, our bus driver, gladly took us to downtown Sorrento for a morning coffee. After a brief walk around the downtown area, the couple (Vladimir and Olga), as well as myself headed to Positano, a brief stop on the way to Amalfi. It took as about 4 hours to reach our final destination. Words cannot describe how beautiful and breathtaking the road to Positano and Amalfi is. Take a look for yourself! ... read more

Yay, the onboard weather was wrong - and Pasquale was right! The weather is glorious here. An early start and enjoyed a beautiful breakfast at our amazing accommodation in the hills. Met Joan (73) and Clark (81) from Washington. True travellers. Decided to head off together so our host Pasquale aka George Clooney, guitar and piano player and singer, best driver in all of Italy (and all that other stuff he told us!) drove us into town for our Sita bus ride to the Amalfie Coast. And what a ride! We really loved it (just return journey eur7 each) but the trip wasn't for the light-hearted as you travel fairly close to the edge, almost all the way, not to mention that you actually have to pass other vehicles including buses on the 'lane' roads. Sorrento to Amalfi Italy 19 October 2013 After such a lovely day on the Isle of Capri yesterday, surely it couldn’t get better today! We were heading for a drive along the Amalfi Coast. As our camp site at Marina de Cantone which is perched up on top of a cliff on the Amalfi coast about 20 km across the peninsula from Sorrento, we woke to a brilliant blue sky and almost a mill-pond sea. It was spectacular. If this was an indication of what we were to see today, bring it on!! After breakfast and a chat to camping neighbours – a couple from GB and a lady from near Frankfurt – and after Tom washed the windscreen, ready for the photos we were going to take, we left at about 9.00am. It took us ... read more

The rain that threatened yesterday arrived during the night, and we woke to wet, dreary weather. But given our limited time on the Amalfi Coast, we felt we had to do SOMEthing today, and our room's atmosphere isn't exactly conducive to just "hanging out", so opted for the destination that offered the most possible indoor activities--Amalfi, about 30 minutes away by bus. By the time we'd finished the sumptuous breakfast provided by Luigi--fruit, eggs, tomatoes, prosciutto, cheese, yogurt, toast with homemade spreads--the rain had turned to light sprinkles. We decided to walk over to Praiano, 5 minutes away, check out the town, see the church (of course), then catch a bus to Amalfi. Sounded good at the time. The first part of the plan went smoothly. We got to explore some of the tiny streets of ... read more

Sometimes you bump into people you know in strange places... So in the spring/early summer in Vancouver we bumped into our friends Marc and Heather (from Victoria) along the seawall. That was totally random and exciting as while chatting we found out that they would be in Italy later in the summer. We half jokingly agreed to keep each other posted on our travels in case we could arrange a meet up at some point. The meet up place turned out to be the Amalfi Coast in Italy. We flew into Naples and hopped a bus to the town where Marc and Heather had been staying for about a week, Maiori. We only got an afternoon, evening, and breakfast with them, but we did a heck of job of making it a fun one (drinks, antipasto ... read more

Seriously, I've never seen so many boys with rats tails, what is that? Is it a soccer thing? I don't understand soccer, so if it is a soccer thing then that would make sense. That doesn't explain all the lady mullets and thick black eye liner at 9am in the morning. Are you heading out or just getting home? I guess there are some things ill never get about Italy!! I got the pizza, pasta and gelato, got that in my guts well and good! The currency might be euros, but I'm gaining pounds!! Ahhh, now where did I finish last time...... Only the Italians would do it but at what point in history did some toga clad Roman sail past this coast and think, "MMMM, that cliff looks vertical enough, perhaps we should build a town on the front of it". Voila Positano. The concept became infectious enough to cause a plague and scattered along the Amalfi coast is a clutch of similar communities painted against these dramatic cliff faces. It's as if they were planted in the earth centuries back and simply grew out, hanging on solely through rigid self belief and some divine intervention. Having said that, due to a combination of factors, our first impressions left us just a tad underwhelmed. First up was a long day of travel negotiating a transport system with the hiccups from rolling national strikes. Then on arrival, an ... read more

France to Italy, Bonjour to Bonjourno, Merci to Grazie, I have now started part 2 of my adventure, and for all the crazy non cycling folk, you will be glad to know there is not a mention of a bike in this entry. To set the scene a little for you, on my arrival in Italy it was 35 degrees at 3pm and that has been average so far, some days getting up to 40. It's been hot, but it's so much better than the cold!!!!! Day 29 & 30 (28/07 - 29/07) my first stop in Italy was Milan and I have to say it wasn't quite what I expected, but in a good way. Knowing that Milan was considered one of the fashion capitals of the world I had expected it to be a ... read more
