Europe » Italy » Lazio » Rome August 16th 2014

Nalynn and I spent the day at the Roman Forum, the Coliseum and Palatine Hill. We started the day by learning Rome's Subway system This has saved us a great deal of walking and is very user friendly (unlike the European key board I am trying to use at the hotel computer. We did however do a lot of waking over the Via Sacreda, the 2000 year old Roman Road running through the forum and Palatine Hill. Nalynn and I had planned this trip in advance and downloaded some walking tours by Rick Steves on our phones. This allowed us to take a tour on our own and gain a true perspective of the history of the monuments that we saw. These audio guides are free and I can highly recommend them. Attached are pictures from the ... read more

Europe » Italy » Campania » Amalfi August 16th 2014

Nalynn and I took a really nice tour of the Amalfi Coast and Pompeii. The ship docked in Naples and the tour was with a van driver and 4 couples. The small group was nice and the tour guide was both a good drive and an informative and entertaining conversationalist. We visited the towns of Positano, Ravallo, and Amalfi. In addition, we spent a god deal of the afternoon at Pompeii which was destroyed by Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. This was the last excursion of 11 day cruise. Nalynn and I get of the ship on the 15th and then will spend 5 days in Rome prior to returning to the US on August 20th.... read more

Europe » Greece » Attica » Athens » Pláka August 12th 2014

Today we are in Athens. The city is about 5million people, roughly the Ame size as Dallas. Nalynn and I took the climb up to the Parthenon. It was a tough climb over slippery marble, but well worth the effort. I also climbed the hill where Paul preached to the Athenians in Acts 17. Attached are a few pictures of the day.... read more

Europe » Greece » South Aegean » Santorini » Fira August 10th 2014

Nalynn and I had a fantastic tour in Ephesus, Turkey today. There is so much history here, it is amazing. I think I took about 200 pictures, but I am attaching 4 or 5 here. We will bore you with the rest when we return home. We also purchased a Turkish rug for our home- please send money, we can no longer afford the cab ride from the airport. Our backup plan is for Nalynn to win back our money in the casino tonight, please keep your fingers crossed ( just kidding). Arlyn... read more

Europe » Greece » South Aegean » Santorini » Fira August 9th 2014

We over-nighted in Istanbul. Nalynn and I decided to take it easy this morning as opposed to getting off the ship and having to hurry back. The ship departs at 1:00 pm and it is raining, so we just decided to stay in, have a leisurely breakfast and relax. Last night at dinner, the wait staff brought a nice birthday cake to the table and everyone sang Happy Birthday to Nalynn. We have a great table with some new friends. Julie and her mother Shirley are from London, and Ed and Lauren are from San Diego, California. We have really enjoyed laughing and sharing stories with them. We hope you are all doing well. We arrive tomorrow in Ephesus, and are really looking forward to our tour there. Please take care, Arlyn and Nalynn... read more

Europe » Greece » South Aegean » Santorini » Fira August 6th 2014

We loved Santorini! There were three ways to get from the portbto Fira- donkeys, walk up 520 steps, or take a cable car. You can probably guess our choice. It was really hot and although we spent most of the time shopping and sightseeing, we often took breaks. Nalynn is enjoying her strawberry daiquiris! The sunset from Santorini was fabulous - not certain the pictures do it justice, but attached are a few. Take care. We have another sea day before we land in Istanbul, Turkey on Friday!... read more
