A very early start today – we were the first group off the ship at 7:00! This tour is mainly a drive along the cost stopping along the way for quick visits before the big tour at Pompeii.
Tour guide Angelo and driver Agostino were a great team. Driving skills for this bus driver are unparalled manoeuvering the bus within inches of other vehicles and the walls alongside the road.
For a short bit of the ride they allowed me to sit in the jump seat beside the driver.
What a treat, a spectacular vista out the front of the bus which provided some great pictures. I also gained a great amount of respect for the abilities of Agostino.
The terrain here is extremely steep and yet many houses and villas are carved into the side of these mountains. If they can climb to a place, they will build a house.
So I have deduced a 5 level communication system between drivers.
First is a shrugging of the shoulders, usually with both hands extended and palms turned upwards. Meaning – what were you thinking?
is a wave of the right hand in an
upward motion with the hand held flat thumb up. Meaning – that was a brilliant move.
is the same as #2 but with all of the fingers and thumb together with the same hand motion. Meaning – stupido.
is the same as #3 but with both hands. Meaning – are you trying to create more problems?
Finally #5 – same as #4 but now holding both hands with fingers together bringing them simultaneously to your chest repeatedly. Meaning – do that again and I am going to have to go over there…
We drove through the many towns of the Amalfi coast – Minori, Maiori, Praiano, Maggiore & Poistano before having lunch at Amalfi.
Then onto Pompeii and a hike over the extreme cobblestones. 20 feet of volcanic ash preserved this Roman city allowing us a glimpse into their life.
Tomorrow – ROME!
