We pass botiques with fanciful names like "Extreme Wear" and "Water City", which seem ridiculous, as there is nothing extreme or wet about them. Dive Shops and Internet Cafes have papered over their windows. Freddy's Bar and Apollo Rent A Car have been deserted for months. They only activity inside of these former businesses is the annual winter overhaul and repair work crawling along. Only those businesses necessary to the locals survival are still open: Cava Mini Market and the all-inclusive Assos International Kiosk that sells everything from milk and beer to stamps and candy. Travel in the winter means moving without tourists. It brings you closer to the local culture and the real people who keep these towns alive. I finally bought my ticket to Rhodes!!! Even though I used to go there every summer, I haven't been in about 10 years. I got a decent deal from Orbitz.com so I'm pretty happy about that. Well Val and i felt fresh and alive after two weeks in Greece!! We deffinately indulged in the Gyros and Baklava...mmmmm!!So after an intense 2 days (overnight train, then overnight ferrie) of travelling from Rome to Athens, we were relieved that it was just another 8 hour ferrie to the island of Sanotrini!!! Trust me when i say it was worth the journey to the destination!! Just as i imagined it would be...narrow streets, beautiful white, blinding white even, were the houses, all propped up on the hills giving a spectacular view of the ocean all around!! On their way from Santorini to Turkey the mumbling travellers Nad and Ped found themselves cooling their heels on the Greek island of Naxos awaiting a connecting ferry to Samos and eventually the port town of Kusadaci in Turkey. The weather turned bad and a 2 night stop-over turned into an unforseen rainy and windy 8 nighter after the sea became too rough for the wussy-pussy-scardy cat captains to sail their monster ferry across. The very understanding couple took their time taking in the sights of their hotel room and the 14 inch colour tv while catching up on some much needed washing and the cooking a few homely meals. A classic case of turning a negative into a positive was the end result. And the weather got better too!... read more

Ela! This is the Greece we had been waiting to see! Tiny narrow paved streets with white and blue houses and windmills lining the beach! Its so different to anywhere we have been and its hard to describe but you can reach out and touch the houses on both sides of the street. They are all white with blue windows and they are so close together its like walking through a maze. You never walk down the same street twice. Our hotel was so nice with a pool lined with sunbeds and even a hammock. Its a pity the weather was not good for swimming althought there were people determined to get a holiday tan still laying by it each day. Our first night was crazy.
