When traveling with boys, be forewarned that the dynamics are different. Profound and sentimental statements are often interrupted by inane comments like, "there is still chicken on your plate". NBA and NFL players are discussed as if they were lifelong companions. Games are played with more frequency and competition. We have become addicted to Gin Rummy, Scrabble and Risk. The "who is the better athlete" debate is a daily occurrance. Bodily functions and emissions have just become background noise. Throwing rocks always seems like a good idea. They make fun of me when I mention the need for a manicure. "Yeah! I need one too!" they tease. I practice defensive eating maneuvers, solidly guarding my plate, but eventually succomb to their hungry eyes and the knowledge that their bodies need more food than I do. Boys ... read more

We pass botiques with fanciful names like "Extreme Wear" and "Water City", which seem ridiculous, as there is nothing extreme or wet about them. Dive Shops and Internet Cafes have papered over their windows. Freddy's Bar and Apollo Rent A Car have been deserted for months. They only activity inside of these former businesses is the annual winter overhaul and repair work crawling along. Only those businesses necessary to the locals survival are still open: Cava Mini Market and the all-inclusive Assos International Kiosk that sells everything from milk and beer to stamps and candy. Travel in the winter means moving without tourists. It brings you closer to the local culture and the real people who keep these towns alive. You sacrifice sun, festivals, and the party atmosphere, but in return you receive grossly slashed ... read more

I haven't posted in a while but I need to tell the world how excited I am about going to Greece this summer!!! Since my girlfriend wasn't able to get out of taking summer classes, I'm forced to go by myself. Travelling alone is something that I've wanted to do for a long time now. The fact that I've been to Rhodes many times in the past should make things go a lot smoother. The only problem that I'm running into at this moment is the fundraising effort here. I'm going to need to do something to make some extra cash before I go. Hopefully my tax return will be fruitful. My Greek aunt will be coming to the states next week so I'll be able to ask her if I can stay in the bedroom ... read more

I finally bought my ticket to Rhodes!!! Even though I used to go there every summer, I haven't been in about 10 years. I got a decent deal from Orbitz.com so I'm pretty happy about that. In the 10 years that I didn't go to Greece, I travelled all over the USA with a couple of drum and bugle corps. I'll be flying from Tampa, Fl to Rhodes, Greece on May 29th and returning on June 27th. Email me if you're going to be there!!... read more

We flew into Athens on Oct 30 to some misfortune. It was cold and rainy and we found ourselves at the luggage claim belt a bit longer than expected. The belt was empty and Ryan's bag didn't appear. So while we were already tight on time, we had to put in a claim and then run to the metro, which we just made. They actually had to reopen the doors for us. It was about a half hour ride to the Port of Piraeus where we scrambled through the rain to purchase our tickets and find the ferry. It wasn't hard to miss...it was basically a small cruise ship. After taking ferries in Nicaragua and Honduras we had some misconceived expectations....much to our delight. It was a gorgeous ferry with restaurants, tvs, dvd/movie rentals cushy seats, ... read more

Well Val and i felt fresh and alive after two weeks in Greece!! We deffinately indulged in the Gyros and Baklava...mmmmm!!So after an intense 2 days (overnight train, then overnight ferrie) of travelling from Rome to Athens, we were relieved that it was just another 8 hour ferrie to the island of Sanotrini!!! Trust me when i say it was worth the journey to the destination!! Just as i imagined it would be...narrow streets, beautiful white, blinding white even, were the houses, all propped up on the hills giving a spectacular view of the ocean all around!! Yes one might be close to paradise!! We even got to negotiate a luxiouious room seeing as it was low season...still sunny enough for me! We set off exploring the island with the quad that we rented! What a ... read more

This morning - bright and early - we boarded ship and set sail on the Aegean. I wasn't sure what to expect, other than magnificance.... The leader of our little expedition was a man named Peter Nicolaides (professional diver, oceanographer-biologist, off-shore engineer). He runs a school here called The Aegean Diving College and is one of the most intellegent, humble, fascinating individuals I've ever met. Yes, he's worked with Jaques Cousteau. Wow. Anyhoo... after Peter's lecture on the small islands just off the coast of Paros and the wonders beneath the sea (which, by the way, you can see from the boat - the water here is crystal clear... if you dropped a penny of the boat into 10 ft of water or more you could see it from the boat! - I'm getting away from ... read more

On their way from Santorini to Turkey the mumbling travellers Nad and Ped found themselves cooling their heels on the Greek island of Naxos awaiting a connecting ferry to Samos and eventually the port town of Kusadaci in Turkey. The weather turned bad and a 2 night stop-over turned into an unforseen rainy and windy 8 nighter after the sea became too rough for the wussy-pussy-scardy cat captains to sail their monster ferry across. The very understanding couple took their time taking in the sights of their hotel room and the 14 inch colour tv while catching up on some much needed washing and the cooking a few homely meals. A classic case of turning a negative into a positive was the end result. And the weather got better too!... read more

We arrived in Santorini at 10pm and we couldnt see much but we knew we were going up hill in the bus. The road up was a zigzag pattern and a little scary because there wasnt much on the side. We dropped off some people at one place and drove a little further until the driver said this is as far as we go the rest is on foot. We thought he was joking but he wasnt. We had to find our way down a maze of stairs to our hotel. It was right on the edge of the cliff. We couldnt wait to wake up and see what it was like. Well, it was amazing! Words or even pictures cant truly capture what it is like. Our hotel was excellent. It had a patio area ... read more

Ela! This is the Greece we had been waiting to see! Tiny narrow paved streets with white and blue houses and windmills lining the beach! Its so different to anywhere we have been and its hard to describe but you can reach out and touch the houses on both sides of the street. They are all white with blue windows and they are so close together its like walking through a maze. You never walk down the same street twice. Our hotel was so nice with a pool lined with sunbeds and even a hammock. Its a pity the weather was not good for swimming althought there were people determined to get a holiday tan still laying by it each day. Our first night was crazy. We met up with all of our new friends after ... read more
