If you've ever been to Mykonos, the spelling of the title should immediately bring to mind the sound of the island's mating call...Myykonooos! When you first hear 'Myykonooos' (probably from a pack of drunk Italians flying by 3 per scooter), you think to yourself, "that is the epitomy of uncool. Who does that?" But this is the island of Dionysus, the god of the harvest, the ultimate party host. Spring time debauchery was celebrated in his name. Large statues of male phalluses were *ahem* erected in his honor. He will get you drunk, provide a feast for the eyes as well as the body, and seduce you into his ways. The following are his tactics... Around 3pm the first day you'll be sitting on Paradise Beach and the DJ will turn up the music and ... read more

"A little boat fishing between Paros and Naxos is of incomprably more interest to me than a new revolution, a new fashion or a new aesthetic in Europe, a new piece of machinery in America or new form of mysticism in Asia. Peace! Peace!" ~George Theotakas This quote sums up my experience in Naxos, the largest island in the Cycladic islands of Greece. Although there is Mt. Za, the highest point in the islands where Zeus was supposed to have lived, mountain villages, remote caves, and hiking galore on the south side of the island, I rarely left my beach. Staying at a camping site off one of the beaches, I rarely had occasion to put shoes, or even sandals on my feet. Every morning I put on the swim trunks, put on an initial layer ... read more

As I sat at the bus stop in Santorini waiting for the metal box without brakes I met some Canadians, and believe it or not, an American (and he wasn't even from NY as they all tend to be so far. Kansas City!) So we made quick friends despite our hangovers and decided to team up for hotel hunting on Ios. A short ferry ride threatened our troubled tummies, but the "Fly Cat Four" arrived on Ios safely. (Yes we named ourselves after our ferry by the same name. We even made a logo and later brainstormed a brilliant business idea to brew a beer called Omega, to be the official party beer of Greece.) But I digress. If you read my 'review' of Murphy's Bar in Santorini in my last blog (Santorini), you now also ... read more

Santorini is a postcard maker's wet dream. Everywhere you go you want to snap a new round of photos. The sunset itself attracts hundreds if not thousands of people to the town of Oia every night. Couples hold hands and sneak kisses. Families sit down to the dinner table overlooking the steep cliffs and the barnacle like houses that cling to it. I didn't know whether to watch the actual sun dropping into the ocean or to turn around and watch the canvas of white houses turn various shades of gorgeous as the light washed over them. So what does a single man do in such a romantic setting? The answer: He takes a lot of photos and then hits the bars immediately upon hearing the enraptured masses round of applause. Ideally, he meets some Spanish ... read more

Santorini had been a destination I had always wanted to visit, the beautiful architecture of the cyclade islands and the deep blue of the Mediterranean. Unfortunately our flight out of Heathrow was cancelled. It being the last flight of the night, meant that Mum, myself and Liani were put up at the Radisson Heathrow for the night, rather than arriving in Santorini the next morning. It wasn’t until the next afternoon that we finally got a flight out of London and were on our way. Because we hadn’t shown up for our connecting flight out of Athens, Aegean Air had cancelled our flights! Therefore we ended up having another night in Athens and getting a connection early next morning to Santorini. Upon arrival into Oia - the most beautiful and least commercial of all the villages ... read more

To paraphrase one of my favourite characters, “Allow myself to introduce… myself” You know how it is in the summer months when TV ratings are off, all the stars go on holiday, and the fill-in comes in to, err, fill in? Well, that’s what is happening here. Julie is on, umm, “holiday” (The cheek! Another holiday within a holiday!...), so younger-sister-and-occasional-travelling-partner Shani is here to fill in for this particular episode. Life last week took us both to Greece. And it was good. Ha ha. No, I’ll give a little more detail than that. Greece was the result of Julie and me walking into a travel agency one lazy Saturday, and asking the agent what he had. He had a week on Kos going cheap so that’s where we went. Kos is a little island in ... read more

It was our war torn livers that were most thankful of our escape from Ios to the scenic Santorini - an island somehow shaped by the biggest recorded volcanic eruption of all time. Santorini is said to be the most beautiful of the islands, a getaway from fast paced living with postcard perfect views; a romantic retreat where honeymooners hold hands, and sunsets are simply to die for : I ventured to Santorini with, Azz, and Alex the Frenchman. For the first time in 28 illustrious years, my Birthday was not celebrated with my family in Melbourne - and despite not getting a chance to cut the cake and make a wish, from what I remember (very little) - the boys ensured it was a memorable evening. Oia, at the far north of the island, lived ... read more

A funny thing happened on the way home from Finland. I got on the ferry but then fell asleep and what do you know-we got lost. I knew we should have taken that left turn at Albequerque!! I seem to have landed on delightful little island with a beautiful beach and amazing food everywhere I turn. Maybe i'll stay a while....... read more

The three words that come to mind when you talk about Ios are Fun, Filth, and Flesh... all in abundance. It is one of the most acclaimed party islands of the world offering two things: hangovers and beaches to recover. On Planet Ios, Saturday night, is every night; and with14 days of straight partying it is hard not to expereince a sense of de ja vu. Everyday looked like this: 11am - Awake to the sound of rude, noisy Italian males, who are awake much earlier than everyone else because they are often refused entry into most late night clubs. 12pm - The bedroom, housing the four of us (plus any guests) is just too uncomfortable to sleep in any longer. 1pm - Movement to the beach is considered, but later dismissed in favour of 30 ... read more

Ahh ... San-to-rini. Discovered by the Germans in 1904, they named it Santorini, which in German means a whale's .... but no I was just trying to impress you. Scholars maintain the translation was lost hundreds of years ago" (Ron Burgundy - Anchorman). Ok so no more movie quotes and I can tell you that Santorini is in fact named after Saint Irini, although the Greeks call the island Thira. Whichever name you use it is a superb island and perhaps one of the most stunning places I have ever visited. The island used to be much larger but it had the centre destroyed by a volcanic eruption in 1650 BC, leaving a ring of islands around a huge caldera. Lonely Planet reckons it was "probably the biggest volcanic eruption ever" and that the caldera it ... read more
