Geo: 52.5235, 13.4115First thing we did today was a driving tour of Berlin. We had 15 mins to walk along the wall and check out the art work of the East Side Gallery. We then drove around the city the best that we could, many streets were closed off due to the soccer matches. Jen, Bridget and I went to the parliament building first. While they went in there I walked to the Victory Monument, which had seemed closer than it turned out to be. So I caught the bus back to Parliament. Jen and I then walked to the Topography of Terror. Got an audio guide so that it would make sense. The audio guide was very informative and started to get boring, especially in the hot sun, so I left her. Walked past Checkpoint ... read more

My 5 days in Stuttgart were definitely dominated by World Cup fever. I stayed with Juergen whom I had met on my Interdominion trip (major Australasian harness race carnival) in New Zealand last year. I arrived Wednesday afternoon and had a few hours to kill before Juergen joined me at the main train station in Stuttgart. The downtown area was teaming with Spanish fans (they were to play the following day), German fans (they were playing Poland that evening elsewhere in Germany) and assorted others. I spent so much time snapping away with my camera and generally people watching. It was sensational. There was a designated ‘fan fest’ area with huge TV screens that was fenced off, but free to enter, it was just that you had to leave your own food and drinks behind. And ... read more

Here are some pics. There's a lot to say, but I dont want to comment on every game. In short, go to a World Cup. It's a great festival of soccer and pageantry, as well as the perfect excuse to stay in Europe after a semester abroad. Best games: Anything so far involving the Ivory Coast or Ghana. Best apoplexy: USA 1 - 1 Italia Worst game: Mexico 0 - 0 Angola Worst apoplexy: Croatia failing to score against the Seleccao in the 89th minute Best bar toilet: Mitte-feld, at Brunnenstrasse 12 I've seen games at the Fan Mile, parks, bars, faux beaches, biergartens, Potsdamer Platz, and my room. Bob, a fraternity brother, is visiting. We played beach volleyball this morning, and now will go watch Australia earn a draw against Brazil. So let it be ... read more

World Cup fever has swept across Europe - taking us along with it. It all started with the unexpected victory against Japan which got us interested (3:1), then for the Aus v Brazil game Lib and I spent the weekend in Munich where, by sitting in the Hofbrauhaus for 2 days straight with an inflatable kangaroo and green and gold-clad friends from home, we showed our support for the Socceroos (a narrow loss, 2:0). With our new-found interest in football we all gathered again back in Islington for the nailbiting draw in Aus v Croatia (2:2). Sadly, it all came crashing down last night with Italy's questionable victory (1:0). Who would have thought we'd care? but these actually are exciting times. See you in South Africa in 2010! ... read more

Sunday morning, we left munich at 8 and took 2.5 hrs train to Fussen. It is a day trip, but I think it is worth to go for sure. After the train, buses and finally we arrived at Hohenschwangau Castle which is where Ludwig lived as a child. This castle is yellow brown colour, kind of small and it has a casual feeling for it. Nothing particularly cool about it. On the other hand, Neuchewanstein castle is a different story. You must remember the image of all the disneyland castle. Basically all those castles are a copy of this. It is beautiful, it appears through the mountain. Lugwig spent 17 years and tons of money to create this. It never completed. Inside is beautiful and interesting. He only lived there for 186 days and the doctor ... read more

the railway between czecho-german border and Dresden was non-stop, the train was the older version of DB (the one runs to Prague was "so eastern-europe", it meant "old", haha), so i could opened half of the window, that's the first time in this journey, so late it came. the train run along the river, because it's non-stop for a long distance, the train accerlerated, i thought it had reached 180-200kmh. under this speed, by the river, it recalled my days in morsel in 2004, eventually i remember why i wanted to be here again. only by the speed and wind, could blowed everything away, that's what i was looking for so long. on board i finished reading more that 10 pages of "the lord of the rings", good. url=http://www.y... read more

The calendar didn't exactly read 7/4 or even 12/25 but for what its worth, my return to land of sit down toilets was both all in one. I got a little bored hanging out with myself in the Philippines so I switched around my flights and headed to Germany where I knew the USA still hadn't been eliminated from the World Cup. (As I write this, we're halfway through the finals and its good to see the Italians have a good shot because, well, they are the other team I was rooting for even if they were the opposition in Kaiserslautern.) So after a 15 hour flight from Hong Kong to Frankfurt I got on the wrong train and went 4 hours in the wrong direction to the wrong city of Nuremburg. USA was toplay Ghana ... read more

Guten Morgen Munich! We woke up to a very warm and steamy morning! Our room faced the morning sun and we both had to get up early because it was so uncomfortable to sleep-in! We went downstairs to have our included breakfast. The breakfast room was filled with soccer fans - Aussies, Brazillians, Germans mainly. After breakfast we took the train to the Munich Fanfest where Nat & Adam were to pick up their FFA tickets. Even so early there were heaps of people there drinking beer. It was like a theme park for adults! Beer, soccer field on a hill, big tv screens, pretzels and sausages being sold. Todd, Nat & Adam got a beer each while I got a Sprite. Haha! I have been 99% alcohol-free this whole holiday! :) We took our drinks ... read more

What a couple of days! Went out in London until late and then had to rise xtra early for flight to Frankfurt. Problem was we got a cheap flight from London-Stansted instead of heathrow. The tube didnt run early enough, so we had to catch a $200 cab ride to the airport at 530AM. The cab driver was a complete idiot and missed our exit twice. The result? We missed boarding by 5 min. At this point quig and joe started to panic and were ready to do something crazy, like rent a car and drive across france to germany. I was afraid to tell them no way and I would meet them in Amsterdam. Luckily, we found a flight on another airline to Cologne and caught a train from there. Not cheap. After a long, ... read more
