Aumbach, It's not really one of those tourist hotspots, In fact, I would doubt that while Horse and I were there that there were any outsiders of Aumbach at all. It's not really that suprising but my Oma did tell me that a family in the Village actually did rent out rooms and at quite a good rate of 15euros a night, no doubt for that "authentic Bavarian Experience". I highly reccomend it to anyone but aslong as you have your own car or a motorbike or a rad little Vespa moped thingy so you can escape before your sanity escapes you. I think my Oma, herself could have made a fortune renting out the spare room of her house with meals and beer included of course. 50euros a night would have been sufficient for an ... read more

Berlin, Berlin. We're going to Berlin! Thats what the Germans chant after each victory, and with each victory they seem to believe it more and more. And so they should; they are playing fantastic football with the likes of Klose and Podoloski, lighting up the nation. Each time I walked admidst the jubilant German fans, I thought, well, perhaps Australia is also bound for Berlin. Not something you would say aloud, but if we can score 3 goals in the final 8 minutes against Japan then anything is possible right? Well anything is possible as the last week has proven: On Thursday we (just) caught the train to Stuttgart and were met by some very familiar faces outside the Stuttgart Station, Paul and Daniella Mirabella. It was quite an odd thing to catch up with ... read more

Hello Everyone! We survived our overnight train to Munich, even thought the cabin was a bit crowded, but we’ve gotten pretty used to sleeping like sardines in a can. We had plans to meet up with some friends in the small village of Tegernsee later in the afternoon, so we had about 5 hours to kill in Munich, which was enough time to introduce Heather to the German state of Bavaria. Our first stop was at a bakery for a fresh made pretzel, which are the best in the world, and then we grabbed a big coffee because we were still asleep from the train ride. We then found some ground in the Marienplatz (one of the many town squares) in front of the Neues Rathaus, the new town hall that is famous for their Glockenspiel…the ... read more

The ‘city gates’ into Muncih, which were a part of the original wall that surrounded the city during the time of the war still stand! We visited the church whose two huge towers were used as landmarks by the British during the World War when they were attempting to bomb Munich. We walked through the English Gardens, visited the Hofbrauhaus - one of Munich’s famous beer halls, and one in which Hitler once delivered one of his infamous speeches - we visited an old art house, on whose roof mosaic swastikas still remain. This is a rarity, as the swastika is now illegal in germany. In this arthouse, commissioned by and built during the reign of hitler, we were also lucky enough to see an old plaque commemorating some of the biggest supporters of the Nazi ... read more

Well, perhaps 'same procedure as every 4 years' would be more apt. There is a famous short film in Germany, entitled 'Dinner for One'. Although it's in english, adapted from a theatre sketch, it's little known outside Germany, where it's a staple of New Year's Eve TV. The plot loosely revolves around the catchphrase 'Same procedure as last year?' , receiving the response 'Same procedure as every year'. Somehow, this immediately came to mind, when, 4 years after our last visit , the scenes of jubilation we'd witnessed there when Turkey reached the World Cup semi finals were repeated, this time with Italian flags, following their dubious victory over the Socceroos. The road encircling the walled Altstadt of Nurnberg seems to be the perfect place for fans to congregate in their cars, flags flying and horns ... read more

Left Cochem and travelled up the rest of the Mosel valley and then crossed over to the Rhine Valley where they meet in Koblenz. Then the fun started. The day we want to travel down the Rhine (a Sunday), is the one day a year that they close the road along the river for a cycle event that covers most of the valley. Now while this sounds like a great idea and certainly something I am sure the locals love, for your average tourist like Rach & I, it was a complete nightmare. Now lets put this in perspective. The River which of course is bloody long has a road running down both banks, so you have a choice of which side you want to drive. Now personally I think that’s a little odd in itself, ... read more

if you dont want to read my rant on the biggest cheats in the world, read no further Australia Was and IS the best team, we kicked arse for 92 minutes and why the game went for longer is beyond me. The game was ruined with the silly little italian bitches rolling around on the ground clutching ankles, eyes, knees.... anything to get a free kick. How can a team of supposed men run around like dickheads for so long?? it is an absolute joke. Whats more is the way in which their supporters behaved after the game, trying to fight us, swearing at us and throwing shit at us. Theyre absolute bastards and I hope they get whats coming to them... On another note the referee situation needs to be rectified, enough said. The Aussies are ... read more

So the USA lost to Ghana in a cynically-played game, with the winning goal coming from a bad call to give a penalty. Wretched. Sweden had its best defender sent off in the match against Germany for doing, seemingly, nothing. Tunisia did not have a penalty awarded for a handball, yet Ukraine (who defeated them) was awarded a penalty after Shevchenko tripped himself. Whatever. The USA-Italy game was inspiring stuff. Perhaps the Aussies will do the same thing...without the red cards. The Bruce Arena era of US Soccer is now seemingly at its end. What will he do now? Coach in Europe? Probably not. Return to UVA? Concacaf and Asia are already out of the tournament...and Oceania and Africa seem doomed for a quick exit. The Argies look mortal after the Mexico game. Germany continues to ... read more

26th June Monday AUSTRALIA Vs ITALY I slept in this morning and headed straight into town to grab some last minute things like postcards and gifts. I couldn’t find anything that I wanted and was pissed off. It was still a while till the match and people were everywhere. We went to the train station for our free transfer to pick up our actual tickets and waited in line. I was getting so excited!!! Once I got my ticket with my name on it I kissed it, and cheered. I then headed back to camp and got ready super quick. Clackers packed up the tent (thanks man) and we get a lift with Danny (the t-shirt guy) to the train station. The car ride was an absolute crack up. The car was tiny and it had ... read more

Our first experience in a 6 bed mixed dorm… hmmm. But we were lucky, the guys who did end up staying in our room were quite nice. Foo and I, pessimists that we are, were imagining all sorts of horrible things about dirty old men  phew! Munich is an amazing city. Aptly called the beer capital of the world, beer houses are dotted throughout the city, with many tourists as well as locals thronging to them. Also the home of the famous Oktoberfest, which for us non-beer drinkers, somehow doesn’t appeal. An interesting fact though… there is no Australian embassy in munich, it is in berlin. But apparently, during Oktoberfest, a temporary embassy is opened in munich, to help deal with all us aussies who have a few too many beers and manage to misplace ... read more
