So it took us about 7 hours to get here from Switzerland, and we didnt get in until 11 pm on Tuesday night. We were a little worried because I forgot to get directions to the hostel and to call them to let them know we would be late, otherwise they give away your beds, and that reception might be closed to we would have to sleep outside because we cant check in. Luckily everything worked out fine. Our hostel happened to be in my guide book, which also had directions, and reception was opened. They did give away our beds, but the place had cleared out after the game here in Munich was over a couple days ago, so there was plenty of room. This place is pretty interesting. Last night we stayed in the ... read more

Day 6 - Biberwier Sommerrodelbahn (Summer Luge) We woke up around 4:00am to a major lightening storm. It was right above us. It was the most intense storm I’ve ever been in. Ted and I got up and watched it from the balcony. We filmed a little of it but it was so windy, we went inside. After a few more hours sleep, we got up, had breakfast and headed back to the luge ride. It was awesome! Someone needs to make one of these in Washington. It was approximately 4200 feet down from top of the ski lift. We all went down 4 times. Too fun! Jessie did wipe out on a rock coming down and skinned her hand. She’s fine though. She’ll have a great story to tell. We’re heading to Linz, Austria now ... read more

Twenty years ago (!), on my first visit to Germany with my parents, we stopped in Wuerzburg and discovered by sheer coincidence that it was the twin town of Dundee, 15 miles from my home town. OK, so it's got several twin towns, which seems a tad greedy, but Dundee's the one that counts for me. Several school exchange and student visits followed, leaving me with a soft spot for the city. When the train schedule threw up the option of Wurzburg or several bland sounding towns in the former east Germany, the decision was a no brainer. Thanks to a late night out and the heavy morning rain in Nurenberg, we got going later than planned, so only really had time for a nice walk around the old town, where I spotted the hotel from ... read more

There are eight teams left in the World Cup. Boringly, 6 are European and 2 are South American. All but two are former champions. For those who neep help: England plays Portugal, whose winner plays the winner of Brazil versus France. Germany plays Argentina, in the same bracket as Italy and Ukraine. So, it seems, normal service is resumed. We didn't have normality in 2002, until the final, at which point many felt that the 2002 cup was sub-par. But enough of that--it's 2006 and I'm in Berlin. The host nation has taken its responsibility convincingly. I spoke to a Parisian last night after France's riveting victory over Spain, and he said that there was nowhere near as much activity and revelry back in 1998. It may seem strange to Americans (well, it is a bit ... read more

Having spent two semesters at the University of Augsburg, I wanted to go back for a look at the town ten years on. Little appeared to have changed much as we wandered through the campus and the Unikum cafe bar seemed to be doing as good a trade as ever on a sunny day. After stocking up with picnic ingredients en route we set off for a pleasant walk through the SiebentischWald towards Kuhsee to go for a swim. Unfortunately, my memory of the paths through the wood isn't what it used to be, so we saw far more of the wood than intended before managing to decipher the directions offered by a passing cyclist (with an outstanding example of the odd local dialect). Jumping in for a much needed cooling swim we first noticed the ... read more

Day 5 - Neuschwanstein Castle Stop One - We got up and headed to the castle above for our English tour. A shuttle dropped us off near the castle for a short walk to Marienbrucke (Mary’s Bridge). This had great views of the valley, castle and gorge below. A short walk took us up to the castle. A small group of kids from Italy began singing in the castle courtyard before our tour. They were very good. Our tour took us through the servants quarters, into the Kings throne room, into his dressing room, living room and finally into the singing room. It was funny because from his dressing room he had built a room that looks like a cave with stalactites hanging from the ceiling. Weird. Anyway, the paintings and carvings were beautiful. We couldn’t ... read more

Day 4 (June 27) - To Munich We decided to take a detour from our itinerary to head to Munich for a day of shopping. On our way, we stopped at this church in the country side. It’s named Wieskirche or Wies Church. It was a beautiful small church incredibly decorated and painted. They let us take pictures so we went crazy. So off to Munich… it was a very old city. Not old in architecture but in older style buildings (1940’s). Munich had been bombed during World War II so many of the buildings were built quickly to handle all the people. We headed to the town center and found many shops to look in. There were many people as it was the first day stores were open after the soccer game in the city ... read more

Wow really cant explain how cool this town is. We ve been eating cheap and drinking cheap (well sort of). The weather is clutch. 30-38 degrees love it. We got in yesterday and did a mad tour of the city. Like 5 hour walk. it was all good. Its quite hard to pronounce german but we try. Directions are a mess but we ve got the city down now. Some of the sites we checked out are amazing. Brandenburger Tor (gate) is probably the most famous. Its the 4 horses pulling a chariot on top of this giant gate. amazing. That was also where the berlin wall was and it ran all through the city seperating east and west. The wall is basically gone except on the east side where it is covered in grafiti. Real ... read more
