As I am still at the experimenting stage I thought I could insert an entry which has absolutely - well, hardly anything - to do with The Big One, aka my year off. This is it. My friends know that I do read a lot. And while doing so it happens ever more frequently that lines, half-lines, phrases jump off the page and I say to myself “What a wonderful world”, no, ummhh, I say “this could be a good title for a blog entry”. And I have started to collect these lines for future reference. But then I thought why wait for occurrences where one of the lines might fit. Could it be possible to make things happen on the basis of let’s say: “… it was smug, it was laid back, and it said: ... read more

After thinking long and hard I have decided to write this blog mainly in English (hello, all friends abroad) but to translate some parts for those of my German friends who might give up after the first few sentences. These additions will be addressed to Maria Guevara et. al. Liebe Maria. Wenn du's bis hierhin verstanden hast, gibt es eigentlich keine Probleme. Aber ich denke trotzdem an dich. Nun zum eigentlichen. Der Countdown läuft: - inoculations/ Impfungen: all done/ mehr Einstiche als Mückenstiche - wardrobe/ Garderobe: considered/ schon mal drüber nachgedacht, okay ... viel nachgedacht - funds/ Geld: hopefully sufficient / im grünen Bereich - desk/ Schreibtisch: far from being cleared / immer noch zu voll - list of other things to do: endless - Travelblog: its up and runnning (which is why my desk is ... read more

Well the time is flying by and I have now attended the Abschluss-Seminar (End of Year Seminar) for my program in Berlin. I am in shock that this has already come and gone, I remember putting in my calendar back in August and thinking, wow that is so far away! Even including a few rough patches in the winter and spring, this year has just flown by.... The 73 "Young Professionals" from our program convened for our last official gathering in Germany on Tuesday May 27. The ride felt a little bit like a slowly growing caravan. Michael hopped on the ICE in Freiburg and rode an hour to Karlsruhe, where I joined him, from there we picked up Robert in Mannheim, and then Pete and Travis in Frankfurt. And off we were, 5 LOUD Americans, ... read more

Hey all, So you're probably wondering just WHY I can't live without my Chinese roommates... well. Peng and Jueng just made their amazing dumplings and shared with me : ) I love authentic Chinese food, and I know I will miss them terribly when we leave. Anyway, backtracking... so last Saturday Joe and I decided to take a day trip to Berlin. We started out very early in the morning, which I'm glad we did. It is 3 hours away by bus, so we got to sleep on the bus going there, and coming home. Since it was just a day trip, I didn't feel like I got to see everything I had wanted to see, but that's what you get on a limited budget. We did not get to see the part of the Berlin ... read more

Day 4: Kollmar - Büsum, 93,41km, cycling time 5:11, average 17,97 km/h, total: 386 km In the morning after waking up I prepare the blog entries for the last two days (for my german blog). I get on the road at half past ten. Yesterday I was told there was a camping store in Itzehoe, and maybe one in Glückstadt. Itzehoe is a bit off my route, but I have to ride through Glückstadt anyways, Here I get something for breakfast, then I spend 30 minutes looking for the camping store without finding anything, A google search (nice to have a mobile phone with internet connection) I find nothing for Glückstadt, but on entry for Brunsbüttel, the next larger town on the route, In an industrial area in the outskirts of Brunsbüttel I quickly find ... read more

My trip to Europe began a little rough when my plane was delayed in Nashville because of storms in the midwest in particular in Chicago. This would not be a problem except fot the fact that my plane was coming from Chicago. So therefore my plane was delayed by an hour and a half.....causing me to miss my plane to Franfurt. Thankfully there were two other United flights leaving from Dulles that night, except the one at 6.50 was full, so I had to take the 9.48 flight. My orginal flight left at 5.16 from Dulles so i had to wait in Dulles for a few hours where I spoke with a retired army guy who was going to China who lived in PA. What else was I going to do? :) It really was not ... read more

Die Familie, aber, nur die Eltern. Mom, you asked for pictures of my host family so today while I was making Erdbeernmarmalade with my host mom I decided to take a few. And on another note: Strawberry Jam is so GOOD! My host mother is very sweet, and we were sharing a mother-daughter moment in the kitchen, she thought it was so funny that I was interested in helping make the jam because her husband and kids all love to eat it but hate cooking it.... read more

Munich is great city. I started Munich full of worry that the rain would destroy my one day there. Seriously The rain is following me. It rained in Vienna, all 3 days in Hallstatt, in Munich, and even now in Interlaken it's raining. Enough already! But the walking tour (neweuropetours.eu) still went even with the rain, and my lovely Broken Umbrella (TM) is still going strong, so no stupid rain is gonna stop me ;) The tour is great, as it's purely tip-based and therefore requires the guides to be excellent in order for them to make moneys. And I tipped the guy twice what I had originally planned, the the half-scot half-kiwi was definitely good. We started at the new town hall, with it's apparently famous Glockenspiel (which was underwhelming but I guess charming). The ... read more
