Less than 24 hours to go... :-) Here some words on the equipment I plan to take with me. As mentioned in my first entry my bike is a recumbent from HP Velotechnik. The "Street Machine GTe" is designed as a touring bike. It allows to attach four bags: Two at the luggage rack at the rear, and two below the seat. The two rear bags are Ortlieb Backrollers, in my opinion some of the best bags on the market. I planned to use the Ortlieb Frontrollers (a smaller version of the same bag) but realized quickly that I need more storage space. I guess I have to get me another set of backrollers today. My tent, sleeping bag and sleeping pad will be stowed in an Ortlieb pack sack (which I first used on some ... read more

On Wednesday I'm going to see another castle in Baden-Württemberg, from the pictures i've seen it is GORGEOUS so I'm excited! Plan on more pictures on wednesday! Lately I've been working on a project for school, my subject is "Hat Tübingen eine Universität oder ist Tübingen eine Universität" Basically going over the history of the city and the university and concluding that neither the university or the city could possibly exist without the other. It's been really interesting. I hope everyone is doing well. Grüße, Bethany... read more

Today we went to Heidelberg, which is the most popular place in all of Germany for American tourists. After stopping by the Jesuit church, we went to the castle. You'll see my picture in front of the largest wine barrel in the world. After seeing sheep on the way down from the castle, we stopped by a well-known beer garden before going to Schwetzingen to see the gorgeous gardens there. Supper tonight was at a wonderful restaurant on the "mountain" in Bruchsal. I thoroughly enjoyed my last meal with Constantin's parents. I brought my bags downstairs not long after we got home so they could go to bed, since my train didn't leave until 1:48 a.m. True to form, Constantin took me to a couple of bars and got me more than properly tipsy before boarding ... read more

Berlin Berlin...what an amazing place! It has a really cool mix of old, modern and contemporary buildings and a really cool buzz. One of the most interesting things about our visit was seeing how the city is progressing after the end of communism in east Germany. Because the fall of the Berlin Wall happened relatively recently, we were interested to check out how the city was divided, and whether it has been fully reunited physically, socially, culturally and economically. It seems like the reunification process is an ongoing project. There is definitely evidence of the recent east / west divide, where the east still has a kind of under-developed feel, such as city pipelines above the ground and quasi communist looking apartment buildings... But there is tonnes of construction taking place, with lots of post-modern architecture ... read more

May 31 - June 1 Munich, Germany Another great drive through some beautiful country and into the heart of the Austrian Alps. We decided to take a short side trip to Innsbruck on our way from Villach to Munich. Innsbruck is kind of like a very large Banff. ( for those that know Banff. ) We are not skiers but it is obvious why the Olympics have been held here on several occasions with all the facilities that are available. There are way too many “Austrian Post Card” photo-ops on this drive. Around every corner is another view of the mountains and the small farms built, it seems to the top of the slopes. And if you listen really close you may feel like; “the hills are alive -----------------.” I have always been very impressed, after ... read more

Roho: Sorry the last one was a bit slap dash. And apologies for the lack of photos too. We're still getting to grips with this whole hostel lifestyle. Rich: Amsterdam was...interesting...what more do I need to say? I didn't smoke pot, I didn't wear clogs, I didn't see the red light district and I only wish I did one of the above. You decide which. Roho: I know you regret not trying raw herring with onion. Rich: That wasn't on my list! Roho: It was kind of on mine...fortunately for me, or unfortunately, all the herring carts were closed yesterday. Rich: Just for the record, I really wanted to wear clogs, just to clear the air. Roho: Of all the pot smoke? Rich: Yes well there was plenty of that too. When you see me next ... read more

I just wasn't prepared for what happened after the last post; bear with me folks - this is going to be a long one. Wednesday evening - I stayed home for a quiet evening. Wrote the last blog entry, did some laundry in the sink, did some dishes - and then my computer started acting funny. It was taking forever to load, running very slowly and making some funny noises. I turned it off for the evening and assumed things would be better in the morning. Thursday - Not better, not better at all. Took over 45 minutes to load but managed to get it to full power. Was still acting funny so I turned it off and had a shower. Came back only to have it refuse to even boot up. Was making new ticking ... read more

Leg 2 - Germany! We were originally just going to go to Munich, but after prices shot up for airfare from Stockholm to Munich, we added Berlin (a cheaper flight plus a night train to Munich was still less than the cost of Stockholm-Munich) into the mix. I'm really glad we did because it was such an interesting and historically rich town. Our challenge was to see how much of Berlin we could see in one day, and I think we succeeded. Right off the bat we went to "Checkpoint Charlie", the checkpoint that was used to cross from the American sector of Berlin to the Soviet section. After a quick frappacino at a Starbucks (yes, I broke down... it's only been my second Starbucks trip in Europe though) we did kind of a walking tour ... read more

Prost! Noah and I are here in Germany now. We arrived after our 10 hour train ride from Genf, Switzerland. We leave tomorrow night for Thailand. I guess I'll fill you in on what Noah and I have been up to the past couple days. No pictures today because this internet lounge doesn't allow me to hook up my camera. Picking up where I left off, Noah and I left the internet cafe and went to this park Noah remembered from his childhood and made lunch and had a beer. Our sandwiches were delicious. France was fun for the breif time we were there. As we returned later on, we met up with Nora and her coworker again at the lake for a beer while sitting on these rocks on this sort of pier. After all ... read more
