My time with the Daniel and Christian (and Johannes, who got home in time to head off with the three of us toward France) was short and really great. After two days hiking and hanging out at their place, we hit the road. Our goal was to get to Lyon by the evening, about 300 km away, not far but with the bus' lack of speed, and some of the mountain roads, it took close to 8 hours of driving. I drove the final leg of our day’s journey from Bavaria, through Switzerland, and into France, our final destination for the day being Lyon. Our plan for accommodations in Lyon was to sleep in the camper van, so in fact we didn’t care too much where we ended up as long as we found a good ... read more

We have been in Lyon for the past two days. Great wine region in France and got to taste some today - very nice- before a picnic on the hill which was after a long walking in 30 degree temperatures but it is a hot heat so it is not as bad as home. Last night believe it or not we ended up in an Aussie Bar - yes you read it correctly in a student city with more restaurants per capita than anywhere else in the world and we go to the Aussie one. Not only that it was happy hour and one of the cocktails was called an All Black. The kiwis amongst us were not impressed. We have a very long bus trip tomorrow down to Barcelona - but that will be fine ... read more

The trip from Paris in the TGV was awesome. The Gare de Lyon station is magnificent in it's old world grandeur. The facilities are first rate and boarding facilites are so simple, god knows why anybody would fly anywhere that the TGV goes too... TGV stands for Train à Grande Vitésse and it surely is fast. We flew thru some of the prettiest countryside you will ever see and checked in to the Holiday Inn at Brotteaux by Lunch time. Brotteaux is in a quiet part of town, and was really quite pleasant. The Métro lines in Lyon are newer and much cleaner than Paris... And we discovered , after a day, that some of the trains don't even have drivers!!! Mon Dieu! We took it easy our first day in Lyon, having an easy lunch ... read more

Well, the Eiffeil Tower at night is pretty spectacular. First off we stopped off at the Place de Chaillot to have a look at the Tower fro, afar and ad,ire the light show. There was a pretty big crowd of people there, all taking flash photos, as if that would make a difference!!! Once the light show stopped, we made our way down towards the Eiffel Tower, and along the way Sam managed to stumble over a step and hurt her foot... So we rested a while, then made our way up the east tower to the second floor of the tower. It was a clear night and the view was awesome. We didn't want to queue for 45 minutes to go to the top so we made our way down. We caught a cab back ... read more

The flight from Heathrow was short, but somehow BMI managed to lose Sam's suitcase... We figured it was bad when we realised the sticker for it was stuck to fast to Ivan's suitcase. The guy at the service desk was very helpful and walked us thru a lost luggage report and assured us that we'd get a call about the luggage when they found it. The next day, Sam rang the call centre and was told that the luggage had been found and would be sent over and we'd have it either by the evening or the next morning (Thursday). It's now Saturday and it still hasn't arrived.. As far as we can tell, from the conflicting reports, the case is in Paris, but hasn't been checked and sent to us yet, which is a right ... read more

Hiya all. Thanks for all your comments! - Bek Dade - what a blast from the past! Thanks, Kristy is a cutie, we have to get down to see your part of the world before too long - so close, but so far... Trish - living the good life! Good on you. Let me know what's happening on Passions. :) Okay - it occurs to me that we haven't put up any pics of Lyon, and all the things we have seen and people we have met. Yesterday Daniel took us around Lyon for a tour. There is a part of Lyon called vioux Lyon or something like that - it means 'old' Lyon and its got cobble stone streets, and all these bouichan restaurants which specialize in set price three course meals. the other night ... read more

Well, last night was great! We watcheed some Lemonny Snickets in french with a very shy Mathilde - who is very beautiful... Clair has two very gorgeous kids! the little crazy one toddled off to bed early (after giving everyone 2 kisses on the cheek) and we all ate cheese fondue. delicious! Raphael was the only one to drop his bread, but we didn't make him run naked around the house as it was raining. We then went to bed, and man... do they have thick curtains! I slept right through until nearly 9! the cheese gave us all wacked out dreams though, so we woke up all exhausted! Mathilde and Raphael had left for work/school already, so we hung out with Justine (she did lots of art in my travel diary!) then, after raining all ... read more

Bonsoir! We have arrived in France at last!! (Okay, so it has been nearly two days since we landed, and the journey on the plane only took one hour and thirty minutes but this is a travel blog and it is our duty to entertain you, so there!!) Anyway. So. France!!!! France is French! It is a very old, well-established awesome place and it is beautiful. It is getting stranger and stranger with each day we are here; more and more things about France are quirky and we are treading in more and more dog poo and smoking more and more cigarettes and drinking more and more alcohol. All the things people have told you about France are probably true. There are people walking dogs absolutely everywhere - they go on public transport, they hang out ... read more
