Eliza had a rough night’s sleep last night and kept us up most of the night. I ended up getting up with her around 7:30 and heading off in search of breakfast. We found a farmer’s market right down the street and got a huge bag of bananas and oranges for 5 euros. We then found a patisserie and got some pastries for breakfast as well. I went for a short run up and down the Saone river. The part of Lyon where we are staying is bordered by the Rhone on one side and the Saone on the other. When I got back we all got ready and went to explore the town. We walked up the river and over one of the pedestrian bridges. There are lots of bridges crossing the Saone river ... read more

Lyon - Driving our new VW family car I thankfully feel completely inconspicuous …. The French are crazy fast drivers, yet ironically patient and courteous. I have not once been hassled or honked and thus keep my focus on turning into the right lane, whilst reading signs I don’t recognise and changing gear all at the same time. It definitely stimulating! Once near Lyon I was happy to leave the car at home and travel by train into town. Lyon is full of youths zipping from place to place on motor scooters or hanging out at cafes or corner shops. The boys are either uber cool in a slightly sleazy kind of way or clean cut and well behaved. The girls could be from anywhere and I can’t find one defining characteristic that sets them ... read more

Day 4 and 5 We caught the train to Lyon today. We stood on the platform, fumbling with the machine which could not accept our credit cards (a l’etranger) when a guard stepped off the train and waved us in. Intrigued by my haltering French, they took pity on us and sat us in first class and helped us with a ticket on the train. Lyon is a magnificent city. Is was built between two rivers: the Rhone and the Saone which run east-west and converge at a point at the west of the city, creating a 500-800m wide peninsula. It was originally founded in 43BC by the Roman empire and has had periods of major growth in the 15th and 16th Century. The first Christian church was in Lyon in the 4th Centuty. We ... read more

Lentilly / LyonKate Smith & Betty Mckew Well I'm aching all over and almost missed our bus stop from dozing on the bus ride back to our lodging. We have spent 9 hours roaming the streets of Lyon today ontop of the 12 hours yesterday . Its daylight saving with an addditional 2 hours being in the northern hemisphere ... so the sky is still has a tone of blue up to 9pm. It is very deceptive. We are staying in a B&B in Lentilly (pronounced Lenteey) owned by a very lovely woman named Florence. She was telling me this morning that the house has been in her family for 3 generations. Its a typical weathered country villa with a enchanting unkempt traditional garden that includes some very large old trees a disused loam tennis court ... read more

I left New Orleans on the 7th of June and arrived in Lyon, France on the 8th. We spent our first weekend figuring our way around the city and getting use to the new surroundings. The first night here was very very hot so I didn't get much sleep that night but it has since cooled and it is very pleasant now. There is a bar in our neighborhood that is New York themed and we have been there several times. It is funny to see what the French think America is like. It is really no different than any other French bar except that they play really outdated and bad American music. I really like our apartment. It is on the 7th floor of the building and is very spacious. Since we have no ... read more

so, we know, it's been a while since our last update. we have had issues finding means of communication in the south of france, but we were finally able to find an internet cafe in lyon. we spent our last day in spain at the dali museum. it was really amazing! pictures are to come....soon if not today. we also explored the ancient city of gerona that day. its beautiful there. it was a great last day. then we moved on to the south of france, to nimes. we only spent 2 nights there so we could take a bus to the pont du gard. thank goodness too. the people there were so unbelievably RUDE!! we tried to find a place to eat after we arrived there. the french eat at strange times so very ... read more

Today we said “Farewell!” to Brendan who is off to Beaulieu-ser-Mer to join his new yacht, Moira, for the rest of the year. Meanwhile Leah and I were on a train to Lyon, which took us right along the southern coast with some great scenery. We dumped our stuff at the hotel and headed for the tourist information centre asking what there is to see in Lyon - we only have today, and its 2pm already! We walked over the ‘La Saōne’ bridge, admiring the lovely view down the river Rhône below and caught the cute cable car to Fourviere, high up on the hill. Upon exit, Leah and I were stunned at the beauty of the external architecture of the Basilica Notre-Dame de Fourviere, with its four large white turrets and its façade covered in ... read more

Here I am in Lyon, which before I arrived had allegedly been having a beautiful heatwave. As you can see, this didn't last, but we still had a great time eating plenty of nice food. The old town is apparently the top place in Europe for restaurants per square mile. Eating out is very cheap here, which is good because you'll need lots of energy to climb the steps up to the Basilica (which Steph, having read too much Harry Potter, decided to call the Basilisk). My legs are too short for such an epic climb, so I was carried. Lucky me! The pictures show me with the view from the Basilica, and with Charlie at the Roman ampitheatre we visited on the way down. ... read more

We only spent three nights in lyon, so we didn't really get a chance to see a whole lot. This was not helped by the fact that we were here over Easter, so lots of things were closed. Unlike Strasbourg which felt small and quaint, in many ways Lyon felt just like a big gritty city and didn't really leave a good impression on us. Maybe if we had had more time to look around, this would have been different.... read more

Hello all! Well, the last time I posted, I had just been to an Olympique Lyonnais match, and since then, not a whole lot has happened except the usual routine of pubs, clubs, and ESDES football games on sunday afternoons! Things at school have started to get busy as we have been getting nto our projects and assignments in greater detail. We have a week long break (basically the same thing as our 'Reading Break' in Canada) so myself and two friends (an American guy named Ben, and a Finnish guy named Tero) have booked flights to Belfast for the week. We'll be staying with my Dad's friends Fergus and Pamela, who happen to live out in a place called Downpatrick - about a 30 minute drive from Belfast if I remember correctly. It's out in ... read more
