So my next stop after Christmas was Lyon. Im staying with a good friend, Cyril, his younger sister and older brother. Yesterday and today I have been out cruising the city. Of all the places I have seen so far, Lyon has by far been the prettiest. The city has a vibrant nature and the streets are filled with peole, young and old, gay and straight, black and white. Everybody is so happy and frendly. Yesterday I went o a part in Old Lyon City and from there to cathedral on the hill overlooking the city, as seen in the pictures. Today I went for motercycle ride through the city fron to back and it was so special. While on the back of that bike I felt like crying. I have never seen anything this pretty ... read more

The last few days in Paris were relatively quiet, though we did manage two dinners at the Aussie Embassy! Very nice view of the Eiffel Tower I must say, just metres from the back terrace, lucky you Louise and Paul! We had our biggest night to date after our second dinner at Damien and Syl's house after which we headed to a few dodgy bars. Despite the pouring rain we managed to find our way to the Musee d'Orangerie which has the most delightful Monet waterlillies. They were just huge, too big to photograph though I did try (and almost got into trouble because I left the flash on!). On our last day we made it to the Sacre Coeur in Montmarte. I just loved the ambience, although i'm sure most of it was for the ... read more

After leaving Geneva I was headed for Lyon, where I met a friend I met in Ireland on my Paddywagon tour, Sara (from Melbourne) and her cousin. The girls are there studying, and we headed back to the flat they are staying at, which is very impressive. After they saw a few photos of me from last year's travels I was told I looked far younger then than now! Thanks!!!! But perhaps this travelling has aged me! After a while we headed out to where the girls recommended, and after walking around for a while taking in the growing atmosphere, there was a big band playing new age songs, which was pretty cool, along the narrow cobbled streets of Lyon. With Lyon the gastronomical capital of France, we were spoilt for choice with the number of ... read more

Just got back last night from a little tour of Lyon and Grenoble. Things have been going well. Fall finally decicded to reach Montpellier. About a week and a half ago it was still 70 degrees. So here is the breakdown of my trip: Last Wednesday: Leave for Lyon around 9:30 am. Felt nice to get a little vacation because I had just turned in my dreaded Essay for my multiculturalism class. Yeah, it wasn't so hard to write about the Rwandan genocide and whether it was an ethnic conflict or the result of tribalism or the result of a complex network of political, social and economic factors, IN FRENCH. Quite an accomplishment if I do say so myself. We will see what the prof thinks.... Anyway. We arrive in lyon around lunch time and check ... read more

First and only rest day of the tour gives us the opportunity to write our first and only blog entry of the trip. Until now we've been out in the sticks cycling from dawn till dusk averaging around 80 miles a day (650 total), and with the weather being so good (but the wind strong and relentless) we decided to just do the twenty or so miles from our campsite in Anse into central Lyon. So today we've spent the afternoon wandering up and down the city and trying our best to recoup spent calories. As you might guess from where we are progress has been good, but at a price. Paresh has a sore derriere, Marie has got a sore derriere, Fran has got a sore derriere, Simon has got a sore derriere. Other than ... read more

PHOTOS AND FRENCH VERSION TO FOLLOW SOON... Lyon, situated on two rivers (the Saune and the Rhone/Rhine), with a charming old quarter recognised as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, site of the Basilica with its amazing murals, home to the famous Jacquard silk, and also the residence of STEF, my friend Stef from Belgium (as she is constantly reminded by all the Frogs who are hopelessly provincial and mock her charming accent and her relentlessly cool Belgian slang). I visited Stef for about four days, first stopping at a party in the Alps, like you do, thrown by her friends. I met a Frenchman there who likes feminists - yes, a Frenchy who not only isn't sleazy but actually likes femos! It's crazy. Actually, pretty much everyone at the party was lovely, very friendly (don't ... read more

On our way to the French Riviera we spent one night in the wine region town of Lyon. We stopped at JC's winery and did some tastings. Kev really got into it! Tonight we had a traditional French Dinner. Yes, that involves French Onion Soup followed by Escargo (snails) and Frogs Legs. Suprisingly, they were quite nice. The frogs legs were a hit with most people on tour. ... read more

Hey peeps, just lost a massive entry so im keeping this short or ill get annoyed repeating myself. Plus these foriegn keyboards are driving me nuts!!! Spent a day in Paris, beautiful city, architecture second to none. Weve seen Mona Lisa, Eiffel Tower, Arch of Triumph, De Leuve (from da vinci code) and Notre Dam in latin quatre, the coolest part of the city. Unfortunately the french there dont want to give us the time of day. So next day went to Lyon. Soon as we got off train we met backpackers who showed us cheap Hostel. In eve we met lots of french, germans and many skandinavians. Spent all night chatting despite the language barriers, really cool night. Today Pierre and Sebastian are showing us around. Alex guided us here cause its where the father ... read more

Arles - Avignon - Lyon (Train) 8-10 September The centre of Lyon city lies in strip of land between the Saône and the Rhône Rivers. Our accommodation is near the train station, some way over to the east of the Rhône. It is a long walk before we cross the river and walk down the long pedestrian street to the largest public square in France. We wander over the Saône to the medieval town Vieux Lyon (Old Lyon) on the right bank. From the congested arts markets in its narrow streets, we climb the staircases to Fourvière hill - the site of the Notre-Dame de Fourvière basilica. We have a panoramic view over all of Lyon as we rest at the top. Our effort was rewarded with a large glass of Leffe Blonde on our return ... read more
