Well hello all, Firstly, I apologize for the delayed update on what i've been doing since I left you all about a week ago. Things have been hectic getting the dorm set up and everything organized, and internet access has been quite sporatic since i've been here, but as i've continued to get settled in, I finally have access to internet, and should be reachable more often over msn (or the far superior Skype - which many of you should download). The few times i've been able to talk to people, i've been on the internet at random cafes, or surprisingly McDonald's! What may surprise you more than McDonalds' free wireless internet network is the fact that McDonald's seems to be extremely popular here! Despite France's reputation for fine cuisine, the french do not seem able ... read more

So, vacation has officially (sort of) ended. I had my first day of actual, will-be-graded, class. I decided to go to a French History class and and a class on Geopolitics and Development. Pretty interesting stuff, really. At least I understood most of it. Also, I'm watching my first Olympique Lyonnais football match. Although I'm not very well-versed in soccer, I understand that they are the truth. Nice. Tired. --Steve... read more

I bought a pair of rollerblades on sale today. Originally 95 E, marked down to 45 E. Not a bad deal. So I strapped them up and instant blast from the past. Fun.... read more

Stealing wireless from the neighbor freaking blows. My connection goes out every three minutes and is only barely strong enough to support IM. So far that's my only gripe while I've been here. The shower situation kind of sucks too come to think of it. Most days at least. Today, when no one was home, I took a long, hot steamy American shower. No turning off the water while lathering up, no conservative use of hot water. Just a good, old-fashioned consumerist shower. And it was lovely. In other news, we finally planned a trip for the weekend. All the Georgetown kids, sans Emily who's going to Madrid, are gonna spend a few days in Annecy. We found a pair of rooms for less than 60E a night, so for each person it's only a little ... read more

Went to the movies -- again. First Casino Royal, then Apocalypto and then tonight - the esteemed British romantic comedy, The Holiday. The French dubbing was easy enough to understand. And for anyone who knows me well enough, I'm not entirely averse to chick flicks. Still no class tomorrow -- nice. --Steve... read more

As students at home are enjoying the day off in celebration of our great Civil Rights leader, French youth filed into the classroom like any other Monday. Not me. If all goes according to plan, I'll have class only Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. That's right -- 4 day weekends. Gangsta. ... read more

So I'm one week in and all is going well so far. Orientation was, for the most part, not much more than we did in Spielmann's class this semester. Thankfully, the class schedule wasn't that demanding and that left us plenty of time to get to know the city. And spend money -- too much -- and seemingly only on food and booze. I really couldn't ask for much more as far as food goes. The meals at home have been great. Fish in a mustard sauce, chicken in a mayo sauce, legitimate French onion soup, and phenomenal desserts. If there's one thing the French haven't perfected in the kitchen, at least to my privileged tastes, is Italian cuisine. Both at home, and just last night at a restaurant, the pasta was over-cooked and the sauce ... read more

So after a bizarre turn in London..I've just spent a week skiing the alps. Emma Pinder...the young lady whos family I was staying with found a great steal of a deal of a package of a ski holiday in "Les Arcs"! We have been spoiled for a week with breakfast and 3 course dinners served for us by funny, entertaining young men from all over the uk. Its been somewhat amazing. Spending 3 days on the slopes...2 not feeling too well and 1 enjoying the sights and sounds it has been sweet. Never did I think on a backpacking trip would I be up in a ski village for the rich brits! Met lots of cool people from England and some crazy French too. The conditions have been somewhat amazing...the best snow they have had all ... read more

So I've arrived, without any problems, and I'm finally getting settled in. So far, nothing but a very warm welcome from the family. That will definately help to keep the homesickness at bay. Mme de Beaugrenier and her husband have an incredible, impressively large apartment that will be home for the next five months. As expected, the food so far has been absolutely incredible. That's not to mention that the very first bottle of wine I've tasted so far was an incredible, deep-amber red from 1988. Not bad, huh? The daughters, Alix and Bérenice gave me the grand tour of the city today. The old district is incredible. The charm of Europe's narrow streets and clay roofs gets me every time. Dinner tonight with all of the Georgetown students. So far the only bad news is ... read more
