Hello All, So it's been an interesting 10 days here in Lyon (I can't include everything or this entry would run 5 pages). I'll start with language because I've found that language determines a lot. My French is progressing well and I can now carry a basic conversation (though the sentiments I can express are usually quite simple on account of my limited vocabulary). I can already see that it would take a lot more than a month to become anywhere near fluent (the students who have been here 2-3 months are way ahead of me, especially in oral comprehension and expression). Maybe I'll have to find a way to get to France or Quebec next year to work on my French some more. On to the fun outside of class! On the cultural side of ... read more

Dear friends and family, It has been exactly a week since my last posting, and I wish I posted more, but I have limited access to internet. It's either the teacher's lounge at school during the day, or WIFI somewhere downtown, usually McDonalds, which plays hot music and is kind of upscale, and of course has good coffee and patisseries in addition to the ''Royal with Cheese'', which is their quarter-pounder with cheese. I think Pulp Fiction mentions this profound fact. Anyway, classes have been going pretty well. I have been doing maybe only 6 or 7 hours a week, and this past week and this week are both "observation weeks" where I mostly sit in the front row to observe how the teacher conducts class, from vocabulary lessons to personal style of pronunciation to personal ... read more

Bonjour toutes le monde, So I've almost completed my first week of classes. As I wrote last time, the first day was rather challenging. It improved as the week progressed. On Tuesday, I understood most of what was going on but I did not talk much. As the days pass, I am able to say more. (For those who have never learned another language, it is extremely difficult to communicate when you're trying to translate at the same time.) I still don't understand a whole lot of what goes on at the dinner table but it's good for me anyways. Speaking of the diner table, the style of eating has been an adjustment for me but it has been good. Last night we had quiche au epinard et au saumon, followed by ratatouille avec riz. C'est ... read more

So it has been a while since my last blog entry (yes, I survived Oktoberfest). After taking a day off of Oktoberfest on Monday, I wanted to get back at it on Tuesday. Before heading down at about 10, I checked my email to see if I had heard from my billet in Lyon. There was a message asking what time my train got in. After seaching for about 2 hours, I had a connection that only went through France & Germany (where my pass is valid) and arrived at a decent time of day (I couldn't find a hostel online). Then I had to go to the train station to make reservations. All told it was about 4 by the time I got down to the Weisen. After searching in vain for a seat I ... read more

Bonjour! So I apologize for the lack of communication in the past week or so. I took my flight Sep. 23 from Washington DC to Dublin, Ireland, then on to Lyon, France. During the trip from Dublin to Lyon, I met a really cool guy named Oozie, who was from Lyon and he told me about the city a lot since I'd never been there before. I also had a Guiness at 11am in Dublin's airport. True fashion... ...Anyway on to la France. I spent the first night at the home of one of the English teachers at my high school here, Agnes (sounds a lot better in French), she is so nice and gave me a tour of the city and her family was so welcoming. Philip is her husband, and he's a math professor ... read more

So that we didn't have to catch the shuttle bus back to the Avignon TGV station, we decided to get a non TGV train to Lyon which left from the central Avignon station which was only a short walk away. Once you included the time for the shuttle bus, we estimated that the non TGV train would actually be faster for us. We arrived in Lyon at the Part Dieu station which is in the business district and we checked into our Ibis Hotel which was only a short walk away. We then found the nearest subway station (our first subway for sometime) and bought some daily tickets and headed into the main town centre. Lyon have 4 subway lines, one of which (Line D) has driverless trains where you can look through the front of ... read more

After Nimes we drove to Marseille and stayed two nights. It was amazing! Nice and hot, but the sun here doesn't burn like it does back home - so we are working on our tans. The scenery and buildings are incredible! There is so much to see. Our Hotel was right on the harbour with all the multi-multi-million-dollar super-yachts. We had dinner a couple of nights with Trevor & Julie Best (more kiwis here for The Cup). The waiter at the restaraunt they took us to was a real character who loved The All Blacks and on our final night in Marseille Trevor gave him a Silver Fern pin and he was stoked to bits with it - showing it off to all the other guests at the restaraunt! Next day we drove to Avignon and ... read more

(Okay, just pretend that the Rugby World Cup is not over yet!). We arrived in Lyon from Geneva after an easy trip on the train and found our way to the correct tram after only one circuit of the Station. The tram then spat us out about 100m from our hotel which was most helpful, as indeed was everything else French. We'd heard truly awful things about the French people- their rudeness, arrogance and so on- all of which turned out to be completely unfounded. No-one could have been nicer or more helpful. Lyon, the city hosting the first Australian pool match against Japan, was where we were to meet up with the other half of the touring party; Gay and Joe. Luckily they turned up, and luckier still they were able to recognise me, even ... read more

Ok, for me the city of Lyon was just another big, grey, stressful city with nothing in particular that stood out. But I decided to pass anyways to meet "les vrais Lyonnais" Jean-No and David who I travelled with for a while in Bolivia last summer. They, and the two Lyonnais from kite training, had spoken so much good about their city that I just had to give it a chance to see if the city would speak to me :o) Oh la la, I must admit that I was so wrong. Lyon is a big city, right, but with so much charm and warmth! This is seriously a city where I could spend a year or two. I was picked up at the train station by Jean-No and he took me to his apartment that ... read more

I woke up around 7am to a very silent apartment. I stayed in bed until I heard Emma awake around 8 am. We dressed quietly and went out to the patisserie and got more chocolate chip bread sticks for breakfast. When we returned Abigail was awake, but Eliza remained asleep until 9:30!! Jonathan woke up and tried to sort out his appointment at the University of Lyon, the whole purpose of our trip and yet they hadn’t been in contact with him in weeks. It turns out that their email was down so he made arrangements via the cell phone to meet up with a colleague at 11am. The girls and I didn’t leave the apartment until almost 11 and they voted to go back to the castle playground at Bellacour. We played there for ... read more
