I left Lyon in the early morning on the 5th and as always, it was very hard to leave. An ode to Drome/Ardèche: I can’t write an ode to all of France because I have only really traveled in the southeast and feel most an inhabitant of the department of the Ardèche. I love the narrow streets. (I have never driven a car in France) I love the farmers’ markets with picturesque fruits and veggies. I love the smelly, unpasteurized sheep and goat cheeses. I love the bright green of the mountains, which are covered in flowers even late in the summer. I love the pervasive history everywhere you go. I love the regional specialties that can’t be found anywhere else. I love spending hours over a meal with friends. I love the fields of lavender ... read more

I've received the information from the French government regarding my placement in France. I will be working for 7 months in a general/technical high school in the city of Lyon. I was mistaken in my first post and the work week for an assistant is only up to 12 hours. Working in the city of Lyon is a best-case-scenario since it is an actual city. My school is called Lycee Lacassagne and the students there are 15-18 years old. The school is in the third arrondissement (arrondissement is the word in French for a "section" of a city - in Lyon, there are 9 arrondissements and Paris has - I think - 20). The school is around the corner from the ice rink - although I'm not sure if I'll be skating at all while I'm ... read more

Well not much more has happened - there's a lot of waiting involved when dealing with the French government! I have, however, bought a one-way plane ticket to Lyon, France departing the evening of September 22nd. I'll have one week between arrival and the start of my job which I'll spend finding an appartment, buying a cell phone, and opening a French debit account. As I mentioned before, I know a family that lives in Lyon and they have informed me that the whole family is planning on being at the airport to pick me up when I get there and that they have a room for me to stay in until I'm able to find my own housing. I call them my French family and they call me their daughter "made in the USA". They ... read more

now in lyon, pretty good for a little shopping town, but I dont shop, so staring into windows hopelessly at own reflection. We are moving pretty fast, unlike my wpm on this crazy french keyboard which is frustratingly slow. Who needs 16 keys of punctuation at your fingertips? Anyways lets play catch up. left paris and stopped in chartres for the night, visited the cathedral when nobody was there, a nez experience, then proceeded to get lost and time was ticking down to gates closing at camp site, but April saved the day and found our car. I will now type with no apprehension for keyboard starting noz. Next stop zqs in Jargequ on the loire. I got to plqy soccer for the first ti,e in q zhile and was despicable compared to them. Never found ... read more

Hello people, it's Kristoffer here. This is my part of the France adventures. I was passed out when Peter left early for Luxembourg. I took it easy in Bruges and chilled with a fellow backpacker Molly from Guelph. We're having amazing luck with the weather still, only 1 day of rain! That good fortune continued for me in France . I took the TGV down to Lyon, through Brussels and Disney World Paris (didn't go, just the train stops) and finished in Lyon. I got in in the afternoon thanks to my late departure from Bruges. But when I met a nice businessman on the train from Minneapolis who lives and works in Lyon. He helped me with directions to my hostel. It was on a hilltop looking over Lyon. It had an amazing view! Stunning, ... read more

As you must know if you are visiting this site, I have been selected for an English Teaching Assisantship in the Lyon region of France next school year - 2008-2009. To give those of you who are not familiar with this program some insight, I'll describe what it is here. Each year the French Ministry of Education offers Teaching Assistantships to about 1,200 Americans and numerous other English speakers (from England, Australia, etc.). A teaching assistantship is a 15 hour per week job where one aids a school teacher in teaching English (or in the case of primary school, they might teach alone). There is a monthly stipend paid by the French government for this post. I have received a post in the Lyon region but I won't know what age children I'll be teaching or ... read more

It's been a long, long while - when measured in both days and kilometers. Let's see. It has been about eight months since I wrote in this blog, and believe you me: it hasn't been for lack of things to write. Since getting 'home' to Vancouver after my four months of motoring, I ended up settling (in the worst sense of the word) for a divided living room as a bedroom for another semester at UBC. During this time I was 49% happy to be grounded for a while, 26% missing my girlfriend in France, 25% missing doing something new. But entirely convinced - again - that I was in no rush to finish my undergrad. So, when a rainy October rolled around, with the weather making Le Doigt all but a paperweight, I decided to ... read more
