Well, I ended up staying a whole week in Boquete. The town was packed on Friday for the beginning of their international Feria de las Flores y del Cafe and we decided to stay and check it out. The party that night was unbelievable; the fairgrounds themselves were huge, probably as big as the town itself and there were these two nightclubs that set up openair dance parties, which, for any of you who know me, was right up my alley. There were live bands and then they also played salsa, merengue, and house music and there were little tables set up through the whole area so everyone grouped around them and had their bottles of rum and coke to mix their own drinks. And everyone was generous to the two foreigners that closed the place ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Panama » Chiriquí » Boquete January 6th 2005

The past few days have been absolutely amazing. Every day in Panama has taken my breath away; I am completely enchanted with this place and can definitely answer the question "What is the best place you have ever traveled to?" with complete certainty now. I absolutely LOVE this country!!!! I will try to backtrack and fill in the gaps since I have for once made it to the Internet cafe before 10:30 pm. (I think I have finally got this picture uploading thing down too, so I updated the Costa Rica entry with more pictures, FYI) On New Year's Day I took off with Manu, the Indian Canadian dude, to Bocas del Toro in Panama. I had originally planned on staying in Puerto Viejo longer but with the motorbike tour we did, I saw everything I ... read more

Hey! OMG I can't believe that I'm leaving in less than 24hrs! My bags are all packed, come on it's me, they have been packed for 3 days. I'm so worried about carring them though. I managed to fit everything into one big hiking backpack, but I think it weights as much as I do! Then I have a carry on and a purse. Wish me luck. The worst thing about traveling is having to say good-bye. I am horrible at good-byes. I had to say bye to baby lexi this morning and it was so hard! At least she is comming to visit me in 2 months! But still, I will miss her starting to walk and talk! Still I'm so excited! ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Nicaragua January 4th 2005

We made it over to the Atlantic Coast on Monday, Jan. 3rd. We got up early in Rivas, caught a bus to Managua and then a plane to Bluefields. It is maybe 250-300 miles from Managua to Bluefields but to get here by land would take about a week. You would drive part way on a really bad road, then you would take a boat on a river the rest of the way. By plane it took an hour. They dropped us off then the plane took off for Corn Island, a tropical paradise off the coast. We will visit the island next. Well our backpackse did not get off the plane, after panicking, we asked around and found that our backpacks would arrive on the next plane from Managua, which was about two hours later. ... read more

03.01.2005 - Sun burnt and drunk from happiness... San Jose, Costa Rica I believe I am ready. After 5 months and 12 days of traveling, I believe I am finally ready. I don't remember ever being sun burnt in January. I spent the New Year's Eve on the beach in Jaco, Costa Rica. It was the first night that I spent outside (apart from Camino in Spain). I wanted to be alone. I wanted to get away from the World for one night, eating mangos and grapes and observing the waves as they gently reach the shore. I found a small bonfire, sat there and watch the fireworks and all the drunken people, situated on the beach. Soon people started gathering around me and started asking me what's wrong. 'Nothing. I'm fine. I'm very fine." Obviously ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Guatemala January 2nd 2005

So New Years in Antigua was pretty amazing. The Guatemalans do it right (but extremely dangerously). Every kind of firework that you could imagine was on sale here, and for dirt cheap. I was like a kid in a candy store. Roman candles, Huge rockets, things that looked like dynamite, and anything else you could imagine! So I bought tons of fire works, and the worst champaign (sparkling wine) imaginable. We (a few friends from the hostel) headed down to the central park with 1000's of other people. The local kids would run through the streets with something similar to large wings attached to their backs that where covered with tons of fireworks. The fireworks would shoot off into the crowds, the fountains would singed everyone, and the bombs would explode left and right. It was ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Nicaragua January 2nd 2005

Hey all: We made it off the island yesterday, after five beautiful days. We could have spent another week exploring the island, hiking more trails and such. We decided to travel on New Years Day which is a holiday here as well, so the buses on the island were not running. We hitch-hiked some walked a bunch and finally caught a taxi to the port od Moyogalpa. In hind sight a hike to the San Ramon waterfalls might have been a better way to spend the day. While in Moyogalpa waiting for our ferry, which luckily was running and, because of the holiday, was not very busy, we were able to watch a catholic continuation procession lining up. The girls in their white frocks and veils, the boys all dressed up with white gloves, it was ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Panama January 2nd 2005

OK, I have a ton of pictures to share already and lots to write about but this internet cafe closes in about 2 minutes, so i will have to do so tomorrow.....but I made it here and am having a BLAST!!!! I seriously think I am in love with Panama already -- I mean, where else can you snorkel in a Caribbean island in the morning, drive through waterfall-laden mountains, view out onto the Pacific coast and islands, and end up back in the mountains again for dinner?? I'm going whitewater rafting tomorrow on one of the top 5 rafting rivers in the world! I am so pumped; I will provide a better update on my travels thus far when I get back from the fabulous daytrip.... Buenas noches... read more

I had the privilege of living and studying in Dominica for almost 2 years, and it has been a life altering experience. Locals are friendly, rainbows are breath taking, humming birds everywhere, a top ten scuba diving sight in the world, with lush tropical greens surrounded by waterfalls and dormant volcanoes, makes this place deserve its nickname "The Nature Island."... read more
