A taste of 3 weeks in Nicaragua. Spent time in Managua, Grananda, and Leon meeting arrogant political leaders, working with various NGOS dedicated to organizing womens cooperatives and reaching out to street children, visiting schools, and homes, and finally sweating out all our toxins in a sweat lodge. ... read more

My husband and I went to Aruba in November of 2004. We sayed in the Hi-Rise hotel area and used the bus for transportation. We rented a 4-wheel drive car for one day and explored the island it was more fun that I thought it would be. The following are random pics that show some of what we did. We were there for 5 days and had OK weather. It was cloudy most of the time but didnt rain much. ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Costa Rica November 10th 2004

A lot has been happening this week, although it has been mostly dominated by one thing Mount Chirripo and to those not in the know (I didn’t know beforehand) it is the highest mountain in Costa Rica and the second highest in Central America.... now let me just digress here for a moment... While here I have had time to reflect on things and this was true for this matter... At school I usually got good reports, you know, intelligent(ish), hard working, etc, but I always got let down by the comment 'easily led into trouble' and on reflection of this week, things just haven't changed. For example, Sarah a beautiful Canadian girl I met says "hey, do you fancy climbing Mount Chirripo?" "Sure", I say, and 3 days later we are on a bus with ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Costa Rica November 3rd 2004

Hey ! People have been asking me what the weather is like here... wel it's hot, dam hot, until one of the many tropical rainstorms and then it's hot and wet...."that's nice when you're with a lady, but it aint no good when you're in the jungle man" (Good Morning Vietnam). This last weekend was Halloween, I say weekend as the parties were not restricted to only one night but the Friday through to the Sunday and as one of the main discos in Jaco was offering $300 as the top prize for the best Halloween costume you can imagine the town was jumping with people dressed up (or down as in most cases), in fact to be honest only 30% of the costumes were of the 'scary' variety, the rest were a more erotic tone ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Costa Rica October 29th 2004

OK so after 24 hours of traveling I have eventually made it here to Costa Rica. I have booked in with a Spanish school in Playa Jaco and have decided to go the whole way and book in with a family stay as well, apparently it is the best way to learn and as my family is made up of Miriam the mother and her 4 daughters (of which only 1 speaks English) you can appreciate I am catching on pretty fast. Also as the family owns a Soda (small outdoor local café) I have been meeting and talking to a lot of local people which is really cool as I feel I have really immersed myself in the Tico (Costa Rican people) lifestyle and culture. One example is when I went to a Latin ... read more

Day 2! I was awake bright and early (who wouldn’t be?), so I went out on our balcony for a couple minutes. It was warm outside with a nice breeze and you could see the entire property as the sun rose. Then I went back inside and finished my first sketch. Then my aunt and uncle woke up and I quickly changed and got my stuff together for the day. We decided to go to the Waters Edge restaurant for a buffet style breakfast. It is located in the coral towers part of the hotel and is right next to the lagoon pool and an artificial shark lagoon. The food was pretty good for a breakfast meal. After that, we walked to the entrance to the hotel to find directions to the ferry terminal, where we ... read more

Day 1! We were supposed to be at the airport at about 6:00am for a 7:00am flight, but our flight was postponed until 10:00 am. A few extra hours of sleep, but that meant reaching the island later. Oh well. We decided to leave for the airport at about 8:00am instead. We reached a rental car place and dropped the car we had been driving in off there. Then we waited for a while and took a bus to our terminal where we grabbed coffee and muffins at Starbucks and a bagel from Au Bon Pan for lunch on the plane later. The plane took off at about 10:10am, pretty much on time, and the ride was about 3 and a half hours overall, which seemed like forever considering the adventures we were anticipating. My aunt ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Cuba » Oeste September 4th 2004

Onze eerste echte vakantie (trip). Onze volgende bestemming ... read more
