The comforting thing about the timidity I had about traveling solo is running into people who are even more clueless than I am. I don't know how many people I met that didn't speak a lick of Spanish or who had never even made it out of the country before starting out on a 6 month journey...I felt quite reassured that I need NOT be so concerned. Anyway, yes, I actually did make it to San Jose alive after a very long layover and customs line. Once arrived I searched for someone resembling a backpacker type to try to split a cab to the center of town. I lucked out and found some girl staying at another hostel and we thought the cab driver said that I would have to pay the full amount anyway, but ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Nicaragua December 31st 2004

It is New Years Eve and I just found the first internet connection in awhile. We are on the island of Ometepe, in the middle of Lake Nicaragua. It is a beautiful place with beautiful people. The ride over was not so much fun though. The lake is huge so the waves are like that of an ocean. The boat that transported us was very old and dilapidated by US standards and it appeared to be overloaded with people and cargo to me, standing room only, thank goodness we got a seat. Many people got sick on the hour long ride, we ate some ginger prior to the journey and it seemed to keep our stomachs settled. Everyone on the boat got wet as the waves poured in over the sides. The bilge pump seemed to ... read more

(this one should be short...not too much to report) So I left Utila a few days ago and spent a night in San Pedro Sula, where 4 days earlier 28 people where killed when a gang member took and AK-47 and unloaded on a local bus. But dont worry mom, things where much safer when I was there, they had officers stationed all over the place. From San Pedro, I caught an all day bus and ended up in Antigua Guatemala by night fall. Antigua is an absolutely amazing city. There are a ton of fun little restaurants and bars here. It is a little more expensive then the other cities I have been in but it is one of those places that is just really fun to explore. I would compare it to Charleston S.C. ... read more

Well I passed my scuba course, and I have to admit...scuba diving is a ton of fun!! It is totally like being in an aquarium, 10 times better then snorkling. That is basically all I have been doing since I got here...8 hours a day. Today I saw a turtle. I have a new perspecitive on them now; under the water they are so gracefull, they're just chilling, not like their buddies on the land! Christmas was fun, since the island is mostly tourist everyone just partied really hard here, I think I went to every single bar on the island (it is a tiny island). Stayed up way to late, had to wake up way to early, went scuba diving, and then went back to my shack for a nap (around 4) and didnt wake ... read more

I want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas from the Bay Islands of Honduras!! I'm still in the Bay Islands getting certified for scuba diving. I'm feeling a little sick, and there is a whole chapter of the scuba diving book that basically says not to dive when your sick (mostly because of congestion making it difficult to equalize underwater) but I'm not feeling that bad, and I'm not congested at all...so I'm just going to go for it (don't worry mom, I won't push it). Yesterday I was in the classroom for 8 hours, today is the pool, and then the next to days are open water diving (and then off to Guatemala)...nothing much more to report. I did meet another traveler from the states basically doing the same thing as me(but going in the ... read more

Hello All: ¡Feliz Navidad! We moved from Granada onto Laguna de Apoyo on Tuesday and darn the luck, we had reserved a standard room at the Norome Resort but when we got there the room we reserved was not available, so they upgraded us to a beautiful villa for the same price as a standard. So we got the $200 place for $65. The Narome Resort is a world class resort located on the water. The Laguna is one of the only bodies of water withing Nica that is not contaminated. It is a crater lake fed by natural springs. The water is mineral rich and very therapeutic. It is a national treasure, hay muy bonita (it is very beautiful) The Nicaragua people are proud of this place. We were told the government tests the water ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Costa Rica » San José December 24th 2004

Saturday 11 December Saturday we started to make our way down to Los Angeles. The weather beautiful and we truelly enjoyed the sights. A magical place is the city of Monterey, the author John Steinbecks home town. Set right along the coast line, and has lately become a haven for rich retired people (se photo) So has Pebbles beach, and it is not hard to understand why... In tine for sunset we reached Restaurant Nepenthe, Johns favorite along Highway 1, and sure it lived up to John's description. We drank a wine from the Pablo Robles wine region,so delisiouc it made us change our planes for the following day. Sunday 12 December Next day we headed for the Pablo Robles wine yards, this time our expectations was exceeded. After having visited six different wineries this is ... read more

So I left the beautiful islands of Majagual, and hoped on a bus to Granada. I stayed at a really fun hostel and met a group of people that where all going to the lake islands of Ometephe, Nicaragua the next morning. So I explored the city, and then hit the bars/clubs that night. For some reason I still cannot dance in the Latin style….so I revert to my hip hop roots…which might look funny to everyone else since they are doing the salsa or whatever…but I’m having fun so who cares. Granada was a really nice city, and I probably should have hung around longer, but I have heard so much about Ometephe, I figured I’d keep on moving So the next morning I hop on a bus to the ferry with 3 other people ... read more
