Despite being smack in the midst of no less than 12 other travelers boasting shades of bronze that I will never ever be, I am nonetheless proud to report that I left my Babies' SPF 45 sunblock behind for a glorious day on the beach without the slightest trace of sunburn. Yesterday I spent in San Juan del Sur again since I fell asleep after breakfast and missed the ferry to Majagual, so I spent the afternoon at the local beach. I finally saw the down side to life in this quaint little town, and it is the wind. Perhaps things aren't this way in the rainy season, but in the dry season right now the wind whips in every which direction and changes direction almost every minute and whips the sand all over you. And ... read more

So I try to be a student. I hung out at Spanish school for a few days. I met tons or really neat people! Smoked a joint with the oldest man on the planet (sorry mom, but its freakin Costa Rica) at my hostel. But Yesterday, this girl Liz and Jonica were heading to the beach (a five hour combined travel with bus, taxi, bus, ferry, bus), and about ten minutes before I left Liz said I should go, and I thought about it and just went. Payed for my two days at spanish school, packed all my shit (although I left my stupid rope sandals at the hostel on accident) and we jetted out. The bus ride was bumpy, it got pretty hot, and two birds shit on Liz on the ferry. We finally got ... read more

After a brief stay in Costa Rica with an open mind to staying and hiking in Corcovado, I decided I just wasn't "feeling it" and had to keep moving on. Golfito was pretty and surely a very small gem in comparison to what Peninsula de Osa would have been, but it just seems like there is something missing in Costa Rica. I couldn't put my finger on it at the time, but now that I am in Nicaragua it seems more evident. Everyone there seems too North American. Polite, quiet, reserved, English-speaking. Oh, and all the music sucked in the buses. So, I decided to also forego any plans I had in the Nicoya Peninsula and just head up to Nicaragua. And here I am enjoying my second perfect sunset over the Pacific Ocean. It turns ... read more

Cuba - Beautiful Island in the Carribean Sea During wintertime in Switzerland we decided to escape the ''coldness'' of Switzerland. We've been flying with Edelweiss Airlines, a Swiss Charter to Varadero with stopover in Holguin. We've enjoyed 2 weeks in Cuba. The journey back home was kinda turbulent. Even I got a bit scared while we approached Zurich with lots of crosswind. Finally the Airbus A330 needed to carry out a touch and go and repeat the approach again...We finally landed savely in Zurich and we are reminiscing Cuba as a wonderful, friendly country.... read more

Ola, weer even een update vanuit Guatemala!

buenas dias amigos... i hope this finds everyone doing well and having a great holiday and wrap up to 2005! i have moved on from San Juaquin de flores, traveling northwest to the towns of la fortuna, monteverde and santa elena, in the mountainous regions of the north central coast. after calling the bus department on the 23rd to ¨"confirm" that schedules were running the same for the holiday weekend (like any good little traveler would..), i rose early, said my goodbyes to the Fallas Ramos family and headed into the San Jose bus terminal to catch my direct transport to the mountains where i would spend christmas enjoying the view of volcan arenal and taking advantage of nearby hikes, rafting, and waterfalls. HA! i was soon introduced to the first (not totally unexpected) lesson of ... read more

after a few low-key, rain trodden days in la fortuna (but a fun white water rafting adventure!), i headed to the cloud forests of monteverde and santa elena. the cloud forests are rain forests in elevated regions, making them more susceptible to moisture, cloud formations, and thus creating very fertile habitats for a variety of wildlife indigenous to costa rica. The infamous quetzal and elusive golden toad top the list of things to see, as one explores the forest trails either solo or with a hired guide. there are also a ton of bird species, hummingbirds, monkeys and sloths to grab your attention (we mostly saw a ton of birds...) the other big draw to the monteverde region is the adventurous and exhilirating canopy zip line tours. literally, series of cables that are strung from the ... read more

Sunscreen Sucks!!! Well, it doesn't work apparently. Ben and I are both a bit on the lobster looking color right now. We have had three fabulous days on the beach and have been dining really well. We found a nice beach front hotel and have been reading books furiously on the beach. Went for great dinners the last two nights and little did we know, we were having dinner during a neverending happy hour where drinks were 2 for 1. Needless to say, Lauren and I were done by 9PM and wandered back home. Talk about living easy. Today we spent the day within the national park watching the monkeys swing from tree to tree. Lauren has a bump on her head from what she thinks is some sort of nut a monkey threw at her. ... read more
