Dad and son spent 3 weeks studying Spanish in San Andreas on beautiful Lago Peten Itza. We also volunteered with the Volunteer Peten group and did a little sightseeing and swimming between lessons. We stayed with a local family. Edit Nov.2008 - This blog entry continues to top the hits list if you have any questions just ask! ... read more

45 days and counting! This group will leave the frozen upper plains for Costa Rica on March 5. This travel blog is a place to introduce yourself to the group, post packing and travel tips and share your thoughts as our departure approaches. Once we depart, it will serve as a place for family and friends to follow our adventures, see pictures of the group and post their own greetings.

16.01.2005 - Continue only with toothbrush and camera? Costa Rica Yesterday, after 14 days, again, I ended up on the road. I felt like it were my first day of travel. With the difference, that I had much less luggage on me. The night dawned on earth and I was alone, without knowing where will I sleep, where will I eat and even where am I going. I stood on the road junction in Escazu in Costa Rica and I couldn't feel like on my adventure again, as part of the world, with trust and freedom. I stared at the road and hundreds of cars passing by without paying attention to me and I started feeling cold and hunger. I started doubting that God will take care for me, when I trust him. Maybe everything is ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Panama » Panamá » Panama City January 15th 2005

Panama City has been a very comfortable city to be in so far. The old city, Casco Viejo, is so charming....somewhere between the French Quarter in New Orleans and the ideas one has of the old city of Havana. Although it is kind of dangerous to walk around in, it is so lively and beautiful. The city in general is terrific; the nice walkways along the bay remind me of Naples, Italy, and the tall business buildings along the peninsulas jutting out into the water are like a mini-Manhattan. Except of course with a tropical climate. There is great shopping, nightlife, and restaurants in this town, and I have met a ton of people from all over the place. Funnily enough, I am staying in the Jewish quarter of the city and have learned more Hebrew ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Costa Rica January 14th 2005

In January 2005 myself and my 2 friends Gerry and Scott made a trip down to Costa Rica. First time in Central America and we all enjoyed it immensely. Originally we had an ambitious plan to see Lago Arenal and Volcan Arenal before heading to Samara, Malpais and Montezuma for a few days and then finishing up in Santa Elena and Montezuma. However, after we made it to Mystica Resort (very nice place but not really a resort) on Lago Arenal on our first evening in Costa Rica, we found out that there had been a land slide that was blocking the road to La Fortuna so we elected to head for Samara the next day. Our plans to see Malpais and Montezuma soon fizzled after we arrived in Samara. Things were so nice and laid ... read more

Sadly, this is most likely my last posting until we return home. The month has gone by so quickly. We are not looking forward to the winter weather. We saw a report on CNN on the recent storms and thought about extending our stay another month. Then, of course, our sensible side took over and decided that we needed to come home and get back to work. Darn-it, sometimes I hate that sensible side. Let´s see, last time I posted to this site we were in Bluefields, preparing for our flight to Corn Island. I am happy to report that the flight there and back was very comfortable. We had a woman pilot for the trip back to Managua, so I knew we were in competent hands. Let me tell you, Corn Island was paradise. We ... read more

Well, I ended up staying a whole week in Boquete. The town was packed on Friday for the beginning of their international Feria de las Flores y del Cafe and we decided to stay and check it out. The party that night was unbelievable; the fairgrounds themselves were huge, probably as big as the town itself and there were these two nightclubs that set up openair dance parties, which, for any of you who know me, was right up my alley. There were live bands and then they also played salsa, merengue, and house music and there were little tables set up through the whole area so everyone grouped around them and had their bottles of rum and coke to mix their own drinks. And everyone was generous to the two foreigners that closed the place ... read more
