Took a weekend trip to the Mayan ruins at YaxHa located on a beautiful lake. We camped overnight in our hammocks. The ruins are quite good and the jungle has been cleared enough in the city that we were able to get a sense of the place as it might have once been. Also took an evening boat trip on the lake to see some other nearby ruins, cook supper and look for alligators. I recommend this site which is unjustly overshadowed by Tikal. ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Panama » Chiriquí » Cerro Punta January 28th 2005

My word I am so exhausted right now I can scarcely stay sitting up! Yesterday morning Maayan and I took the bus to David and then to Cerro Punta. We quickly realized that we had been missing out on the more beautiful side of the volcano by staying the whole week in Boquete, because Cerro Punta is truly beautiful. It is really hilly and full of neatly manicured little farms and Swiss-style houses, with tons and tons of flowers and streams and waterfalls all over. I wasn't feeling all that great so Maayan took off in search of info once we arrived and found out that there was accommodation available inside the Parque Internacional La Amistad and arranged a taxi to get us there. We hiked the waterfall trail in about two hours and settled into ... read more

My first flight to LAX was on a plane the size of a pickle with wings. We sandwiched in there like tuna and the guy next to me read his news paper like he ran the place. Kinda like a certain father I know who uses his elbows at the table. My flight from LAX to Guatemala City (a stupid stop over) was a bit better, although it was like an episode from Seinfeld where Elane and Jerry get on a full flight, and Jerry goes to 1st class while Elane gets stuck sitting next to the guy with 7 bags. But, the whole flight was sportin 4.9 bags. EVERYONE. I might have been the only one. The flight gods were with me though, I got window, and no one sat in the middle between me ... read more

So Boquete is one of those towns that everyone intends on staying in for 2 or 3 days and ends up being in forever. On Sunday I headed back to Boquete to potentially meet up with Maayan and Shachar again although I didn't actually know if they would be there or not. However, David isn't really a great town to stay in, so it would have been worth it anyway to go to Boquete since it is cheap and there are nice places to stay. Little did I know it would be a huge reunion. I walked in the door at Doña Cata around 9:30 and who was walking out but Maayan; he and Shachar were staying there too and were out "talking to two crazy American guys", who happened to be Chad and Tyler, who ... read more

Last night on San Blas

Well, Ben and I are now on day 5 of the holiday. After meeting up in San Jose with no problems we spent the day drinking coffee (cafe) and did a tour of a plantation (we were the only people under the age of 50 but definitely the most shaky with our over-consumption of coffee and other coffee products). We went for a great seafood dinner and met Papa Pez, the restaurant owner, who later accompanied us to the local dance club for a round of cervasas. We stayed at an incredible restored mansion-turned-hotel of a famous coffee baron in a neat part of San Jose called Bario Amon. Amazing how rich some people became by just selling a bit of java! After a well neeeded sleep we got up early and took a bus to ... read more

Our first weekend trip was to the Mayan ruins at El Zotz which means the bats. We drove in over rough 4x4 road and camped overnight. In the evening we went to the edge of the cliffs to watch as thousands of bats streamed out of the caves above to go on thier feeding runs over the jungle. They blackened the sky and rained down guano on us.... read more

If there is a more beautiful place on earth than the island I holed up on for 5 days, I would be amazed to find it. Every morning I awoke to the sounds of the waves on the shore and the wind in the coconut palms; as I stepped out of the cabaña, my eyes feasted on the thousand shades of turquoise, green, and blue and at night the whole island was blanketed in the brightest moonlight I have ever seen. Never have I seen so many stars in the sky! It was absolutely incredible. After going out to a wonderful little Cuban bar called Bolero on Saturday night, I left with Ita at 4 am to the airport to try to get a ticket to San Blas on standby. The flight left at 6 am ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Honduras January 22nd 2005

I believe that there is a conspiracy going on between the pharmaseutical companies (like the ones manufacturing cough drops)and the restaurants throughout the San Pedro area. Actually, it is an even larger conspiracy, for the people of San Pedro are using them for the same purpose. If one would venture to the United States, and he or she would enter a restaurant like Applebees, at the end of the meal, he or she would be given a peppermint breathmint. Some of the restaurants even give out ANDES chocolate mints. In Honduras, however, I have discovered that there is a different treat for your after dinner mint. In the US we generally ask for a Halls when we are sick with a cold, or have a sore throat. Here in Honduras, the people use the Hall's cough ... read more
