Well we're leaving the beach tomorrow after a little over a week soaking up the rays. I'm currently in tamarindo with will, karin, and lucelena. For a group of strangers (all students except lucelena who teaches English) we get along great and have become very close. I loved the surfing here. The waves are great for the beginner but at the same time satisfying for the novice surfer. We also went on a nature trip and saw monkeys, porcupines, crocodiles and a plethora of birds. I hope all is well and i´ll talk to you all later. nick --for all the k-sigs..what happened to paul??-- ... read more

As I travelled more North it seemed to just get better and better, seems like the poorest countries had the more friendly people. Tourism is a lot less blown out here and that is very appealing to me . I met Jen here too and we are close to this day, i couldn't have asked for a better traveling companion! I miss her. I strongly reccomend Nicaragua to ANYONE.... read more

Well, we missed the bus. In an attempt to go to puntarenas we kinda arrived a little later than planed and it just happened to be the last bus out of Jaco... And as four Americans (somewhat lost in CR) we did what any normal person would do in this situation. ----went skinny dipping---- nah, I'm just kidding but it would have been a cool thing to do. Instead we decided to stay another night in a lovely cabina right on the beach with a bar (for some malt beverages and darts). From there, the following day, we would start our long and arduous journey to a place called Tamarindo. A journey that parallels that of finding nemo in that there are two of us (myself-which i consider myself the dad) and Will (a great guy ... read more

So we left yesterday to a beach two hours away without any reservations made nor any exact idea where we were going. The two hour bus ride was interesting and filled with an eclectic group of people, and old lady selling weird books, a young man selling god knows what, and we'll just say some people that hadn't taken a shower in a while. As we drove into Jaco, the four of us stood out like any other tourists and first, (in great tourist fashion) asked where the beach was instead of where we could find a hotel. To us, the beach could have been our bed for the night (we had our priorities We found a cheap cabina right on the beach with a bar that resembled Manny's in puerto penasco for those of you ... read more

So I am still a bit behind on my journal entering here because I have been very busy without really doing much here in Granada. Doing a month's worth of errands in the space of 5 days makes for some pretty uninteresting blogging. After we left Santo Domingo on the Isla de Ometepe, we headed to the Volcan Maderas side of the island for a brief stay in Hacienda Merida. Within 30 minutes of being there I wished I had 2 weeks to devote to this place and was somewhat kicking myself for having stayed in Santo Domingo so long. The hacienda is really cool, kind of like a backpacker's resort, with horse rental, kayaks, mountain bikes, volunteer opportunities, Spanish classes available, and .... a real luxury in Central America .... breakfast and dinner buffets. I ... read more

Since I got a couple emails saying they couldn't find the links to my online photo albums, I decided I would just post the links here. I'm currently on Isla de Ometepe and internet access is REALLY limited so I only have about 10 minutes and don't even have the time to really check my email. So all my great pictures I have taken over the past week and the wonderful tales that go with them will be posted tomorrow when I reach Granada....so check back soon for more pictures in the Nicaragua album!! Hi to all, I know that it has been a while since i have written but i have been quite busy here. The past few days have been very 'cultural' for me. On Monday we went to a place where there was live Arabic music accompanied by a few belly dancers. The place had the ambiance of an old jazz bar lit with few lites and covered with art that only those with an open mind can interpret. I had a few Belgium beers there and with 8.8 percent alcohol i could say that if i didn´t stop iI'msure i would have ended up being one of those belly dancers. Yesterday we went to a Lebanese where they can 'read your coffee it was similar to palm reading but different because the owner of the restaurant ... read more

(Journal excerpt 8th Feb 2005) Though i had already been to Isla de Ometepe on account of it being listed among Lonely Planet's list of Central American jewels, my memories of this supposed wonderland were none too marvelous. It had been raining most of the time on my last visit, I had gotten food poisoning, and the jeep we had rented to tour the island dragged along at 5 MPH along the unpaved roads that were worse than most hiking trails I'd seen. Oh, and there were mice in our room and I was plagued with mosquito bites the whole time. However, despite my initial gut reaction not to waste my time going back, I couldn't help but wonder how the newest LP version made the island out to be even more spectacular this time around ... read more
