The Steiner Family in its entirety went to Harbour Island in the Bahamas (http://www.harbourislandguide.com/) for the celebration of the family matriarch, Gilberte's 80th birthday, post Christmas and New Years. The week was filled with joy, celebration, sunshine and snorkeling. The entire clan stayed at the Coral Sands Resort and we literally drank the hotel under the table  http://coralsands.com/. Our favorite parts were: • The entire restaurant toasting to the life and health of Gilberte as we celebrated her big day • Sunrises on the beach • Taking a boat out with Aunt Catherine and the younger kids and scuba diving/snorkeling. Also, Laurie being out swam by 12 year old Anna. • Charlie chasing us through the sea as we rowed along in our Kayak. Charlie’s favorite part of the trip was tipping our boat. Laurie’s ... read more

Christmas in Cartagena was great but then again so was christmas eve and boxing day. Without friends and family it was just another good day on the road. The German owner of the Casa Viena hostel didn´t make a fuss, it was business as usual but a good business so I was glad to be in his hostel. Cartagena provided me with a wealth of new information to assist in the next stage of my travels, and serves as a half way house between South America and Central America. The colonial town is also a superb tourist destination and provided for very picturesque photos. I'd hoped to secure a spot on a sail boat, dear reader, with the plan being to arrive in Panama City following a five day voyage via the San Blas islands. However ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Curaçao December 30th 2005

Having spent one last day snorkeling and diving, including our first night dive ever, we spent our last day in Curacao exploring the rest of the island. We started the day heading to the northeast portion of the island to the Ostrich and Game Farm. Although we didn't take the tour, it is the largest ostrich farm outside Africa. We did eat lunch there at the African restaurant Zambezi, which is an open-air restaurant covered by a thatch roof. The food was great! Paul had ostrich and I had a spicy pumpkin soup. After the Ostrich Farm, we spent most of our time in the capital city of Willemstad. Because it was the final day of Christmas, much of the city was closed to celebrate by shooting off hundreds of thousands of firecrackers (literally) and other ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Guatemala December 29th 2005

Most all of mankind is asleep. These are said to be walking dead. 2 quick notes in response to recent crime in Guatemala 1) Kidnappings of the privileged in Guate are down in the past three years, only a few ricos have bodyguards and dark tinted windows on their huge SUVs which spells firepower...this is more an in country prob...doesn't happen with tourists to our knowledge. The kidnappers desciribed by locals as crazy "loco"--crack users or glue sniffers whose brains have gone off for awhile. Their nutso way of getting even with those who have more in country. (Shoot first, ask questions later. Immediate pleasure "NOW" impulse rules. The ransoms don't always work out, as litte negotiation. Consequences of actions ignored to the detriment of all who fall into this trap) 2) In Guatemala with a ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Costa Rica » Guanacaste » Liberia December 28th 2005

Well folks I'm trying to do a big blog update today! My apologies for not getting something out more Christmas related, closer to Christmas! First of all, I'm excited to anounce that I have a camera again! So from Costa Rica onward I will have photo's for everyone! Once Frank shows up here for New Years with all the photo's from the mosquito coast and the corn islands I will go back and add lots of those for you to see. Ryan and John and I arrived here on December 23rd, met Jordan, Devon, Michelle and Danielle. We had a big Christmas eve with lots of sharads (literally) in which Ryan expected us to somehow act out Tomato aspec. Apprently it's Christmas related. Big tradition. Was pretty funny acting out christmas related items, traditions etc. Especially ... read more

The injured Nautilus neared the smokestacks on the horizon that characterize Freeport. The barges came into view, littering the bay outside the harbour entrance, dwarfing our vessel with their massive multi-ton sterns and unimaginably heavy load of cargo and storage containers. I reeled in the fishing line, hoping to avoid catching any fish from the discharge of these metallic monsters. We radioed into the marina and were told how to reach the dock. We filed in between the rock jetties and gawked at the giant blue cranes lined up like ten outstretched Eiffel Towers, dropping rusty storage containers onto barges bearing the destinations Valetta, Monrovia, Shanghai, and Panama. This massive operation gave an eerie impression to the scale of unnoticed movement of goods around the world. We then came upon a row of derelict cruise ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Curaçao December 28th 2005

Today we decided to explore the island's dive sites via clown car. We purchased a "drive and dive" map of Curacao and then talked with the dive master at Habitat. She pointed us to some great dives! Our trusty friend Zoom (yes, Zoom) helped us load up on air, and we were on our way. ... read more

After a day of travel and another spent chilling, I spent the next one a little more actively. First off I visited the Castillo de San Felipe, built and rebuilt numerous times, it´s main purpose being the area´s main defense against pirates. It also served as a prison at one point, it is interesting as Guatemala isn´t the first place you think of when you think of castles. But in many ways the history is more interesting the actual site. After another bumpy, crowded bus ride on a typically nackered ex-US school bus I arrived in El Estor, promised a beautiful setting and good atmosphere I was disappointed in both regards. A un-interesting, spread out town. On trying to make my way back I was starting the feel I hadn´t done much of interest in the ... read more
