Central America Caribbean » Costa Rica December 26th 2005

Merry Christmas to everyone. I am in Playa del Coco right now with Jordan, Jason, Devon, Michelle, Danielle, Mike from London and John from the U.S. Me, Jas and John got here on the 23rd and were quickly finding out that it would be extremely diffcult to get a place to stay after the 26th...apparently this place is going to be crazy on New Year's Eve. Anyway, after staying in a lady's house/hostel type thing with dogs, roosters, chickens and all, we ended up finding a studio in the same complex as Jord and co. Not as cheap as we would like, but we have it for the week and well, it's good to be staying somewhere nice for the holidays. We had an amazing Christmas, and the food - pancakes, bacon, baked goods from Vancouver, ... read more

It is hard to believe that I have been living here in Costa Rica for six months already. Who would have thought that at this time last year, I would be living in this developing country paradise “south of the border.” A year ago I wasn’t working, figuring out where to go, what to do—essentially trying to determine what my next move would be. I had some good options but none of the places in the United States I could have moved to motivated me very much. Even the jobs offered to me did not do much for me. I think I had enough of working for some big company, making faceless shareholders rich. So, I am here, and it is my home until somewhere else, something else, or someone else motivates me. Not that I ... read more

Hello all, me again! Andrew is addicted to his book. Well, you guessed it, we saw lava which was the most amazing thing ever. We had chatted to other travellers who saw either nothing or an "orange glow" at Volcan Arenal, and I had very low expectations to avoid disappointment. But we just got off the bus and saw the volcano spitting molten rocks again and again. I was surprised at how quickly they moved down the cone. Our tour leader said we were really lucky, and we have decided we are the lucky group because we keep fluking lots of cool things. Today we travelled to Monteverde, a privately owned but protected area of cloud forest. We hired a guide, and it was sensational. We saw racoons, monkeys, a vulture, hummingbirds, snakes, massive stick insects, ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Curaçao December 25th 2005

We arrived in Curacao on December 25th. What a beautiful country - almost what I would imagine the Mediterranean to look like, not what I know most of the Carribean looks like. Christmas evening after arriving we went for a short snorkel off the dock at Habitat, the resort at which we stayed. Habitat is located just outside St. Willibrordus, on the south and western coast and to the west of Willemstad. After a brief snorkel, we dressed for Christmas drinks and dinner in the open air bar and dining area. Music was courtesy of a 3-piece steele drum band - what a Christmas day!... read more

From Palenque I took a crowded collectivo to Tenosique with a small girl asleep on my side, the mother seemed happy as long as I was. Frustated by the seemingly way out-of-date bits and pieces, and the general confusing nature of my guide-book, I managed to find a much cheaper, quicker and easy border crossing point than the one they mentioned. I came across it accidently by asking locals who were dumbfounded by why I would want to cross the way the guide suggested. Very much proving the point that it is only a rough guide (thought not actually a Rough Guide) not a bible. The border crossing was eventful, and funny looking back, but it pissed me off at the time. I rose at 5pm, caught a cheap bus to place called El Ciebo (not ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Bahamas December 25th 2005

I've discovered that the hardest part of sailing is actually getting off the dock. The captain had started several ambitious projects and was in no way able to complete them. We had planned to go south, and the winds looked good. But, a few more delays, a few more days, and the winds change. Fed up with waiting, we just came here to Grand Bahama Island! The crossing was rough once we left the harbor. We were greeted with strong waves and winds, strong enough to nearly knock off the wind generator at the stern of the 43ft boat. (Nautilus is her name.) Once we resolved that problem, we raised the sails and settled into a course of 78 degrees. A large family of dolphins greeted us soon after, diving under the keel and surfaceing playfully ... read more

Panama was cool: I saw the Panama Canal and got an opportunity to stock my backpack with what I like to call 'non-backpacker fashion' (ie. not cargo pants). Costa Rica was fun: I got to meet up with George, I got to go screaming through the canopy of the cloud forest on some zip lines (19 to be exact) and I got to see (and hear) lava falling down the side of a volcano. BUT, the real winner is Nicaragua. It seems the poorest country in my travels so far but I've found that the poorer the country, the bigger the smiles adorning the people. Everyone is just so, so lovely in Nicaragua. First stop in Nicaragua was the Isla de Ometepe, an island of two volcanoes in Lago de Nicaragua. I did a spot of ... read more

Hola Amigos, Feliz Navidad (ofwel fijne kerstdagen).

We arrived in San Jose in the evening of the 28th October, flying via Panama City. It was funny to go back to the hotel I had stayed in on my own when I had been there previously. After a day in San Jose we went down to the Caribbean village of Puerto Veijo de Talamanca, where I had also been before. It is a great place, but it rains a lot, so we ended up spending a lot of time in our room. During the sunny days however we made it to the beach and walked along the beautiful coastline. It was great to be in a place where we could relax, just the two of us. We ended up staying there for quite a while, hiring out a moped one day and driving down ... read more
