Throwing caution to the wind, we decided to cross the border into Belize and make it into Orange Walk in one go. After arriving in Chetumal, on the Mexican side of the border, trying to get a connecting bus to Belize was like an episode of "Its's a Knockout" but the obstacles weren't wearing inflaitable suits making them much harder to spot. Our first opponent was a sketchy information woman who muttered something about a bus leaving from the market place. The second opponent came in the form of a smooth talking money changer who managed to rip off a few people but we thankfully managed to side step him. For opponent 3, see opponent 2 but now in the guise of a shady bus conductor, who was willing to take ticket money from gringos without ... read more

After 2 ½ hours of caroling and mass at St. Pius, we checked our watches to find that it was, finally, Christmas Day. The only problem being that it was now well past midnight and we still hadn't heard from Nancy, whose flight was supposed to land in Kingston at 6pm on Christmas Eve. This was a predicament of mammoth proportions as we were all exhausted and had no way to actually contact Nancy. Dr. Pedro was particularly concerned as he had been fasting for 3 days in anticipation of the arrival of his "little white girl." (There is, by the way, a song with sign language hand motions to accompany this term...just ask.) So we called the Air Jamaica hotline which informed us that a flight had arrived from Miami at 12:18. We checked the ... read more

Ok so first of all my apologies for not getting this up sooner! Especially you Adam who left a message on the blog totally outraged! Also, this is my last post involving Frank and Mike so I have to do my ode to them as well (well some good pictures anyways). We had a great New Years Eve, Frank showed up filthy as a rat (sorry but you looked rough buddy) on Dec 30th, and like the rest of us, wandered out of nowhere up to Dev, Michelle, Dani & Jords casa (it was the only place we had accurate directions to) and moments later, just as expected he was in the pool with his speedo. That night we took it pretty easy, saving ourselves for the big New Years Even night. Can´t remember what we ... read more

Its´s been a while, but want to fill in the missing gap of my travels. After a great Christmas in Puerto Viejo in Costa Rica, I continued traveling south on the 27th of december. With some great people I met, I continued traveling to Bocas de Torro, some island on the caribian side of Panama. We had a great boatride through mangroves and the last part, the ocean where we arrived at Bocas... Some lovely islands where we enjoyed ourselves whith trying to surf (on too low waves), dolphin whatching, island hopping and for the rest hanging out in a relaxed hostel with a lot of other travelers. For new years we went to a bar (the sunken ship...) realy cool place an outdoor place build above the water with in the middle a sunken ship ... read more

Happy new year to all! I hope that everyone enjoyed their evening...I sure did. We went to this huge discoteque called Volcan look, this place that holds around 3000 people, complete with dancers, fly girls, etc. I think I fell in love 30 times within the first 15 minutes. I met a local girl who came back in to town with me to hang out, so we went to a few bars and met the locals, ringing in the new year with guarro shots and Imperial beers. I stayed out way too late, but the experience was like nothing I have ever seen before. Plus, it helps to have a girlfriend in a nice resort town, I just hope she knows I'm never coming back! The next morning, we woke up, got on the bus and ... read more

On January 1, some West Indian friends picked me up to take me to a dinner at a relative's home high up in the hills where there is no water and no electricity. The nearby cold and clear mountain spring is their source for water, as well as a full rain barrel outside the small 2 room concrete house that was built by the resident. It was a lovely West Indian meal, all you could eat served buffet style, and many relatives and friends were arriving, eating and leaving all afternoon. The friendliness and gracious hospitality of the host and hostess could not be matched by the finest hotel. The pictures I snapped en route do not adequately show the very steep incline of the mountainous rain forest. The incline down to their house is so ... read more

On arrival in Livingstone, on first sight there seemed few of the Garifunas about which were meant to populate the town. In one of those typical tourist type ways, development gives you some of the services you want but by doing so removes what you came to see. There´s is no real reason why this has to be the case but through rampant Capitalism and lack of sustainable development this is often the case. It´s the eternal search of many a backpacker to find the place of great interest, largelly unspoit which isn´t virtually impossible to reach or overly expensive. More on this later. The history and the politics of the town is very interesting and surprisingly their is a real lack of information posted in the town about it. As a result I came across ... read more

Pura Vida! I must say, this is by far above and beyond my wildest expectations, and I have only been here for less than two days! I had two long delays on the way down here-on the airport in Charlotte for almost two hours(barely made my connection in Atlanta)then another hold up in Atlanta...but by the time our 767 crossed over Laguna de Nicaragua, I knew I was in the right place. I got to Juan Santamaria Aeropuerto at about 2:30, and to my amazement, I was met by an arrangement of people that I would have never imagined-the first big surprise was finding that an old friend from high school(Tyler Williams, for those who know him), then a girl from UNCW, and then an old friend of Jake Reynolds, the dude that's subleasing my room ... read more
