Sam and I made our way here leaving the little heaven of Tulum and landed in another form of heaven centred around a bustling hostal and a great beach party every night! We hired a golf buggy one day and explored the island in more depth - driving one end ot other other took about 10 mins - but there was a turtle sanctury to see and this rather interesting ´zoo´ so to speak... But the buggy driving was a real high light for me! we got a guy called Toby in our dorm involved to lower the costs. Then we splashed out and went snorkling with whale sharks, was amazing! early start and a drive out on the boat of a good hour and there they were, lots of fins poking out the water... very ... read more

For those of you following our adventures with Hurricane John, I have added in some pictures and video. As you will see the folks in Mexico were well prepared for the Hurricane and cared for their tourists extremely well. We were in no danger and in fact had enjoyed such an outstanding holiday prior to the Hurricane that the forced rest time in the hotel was quite enjoyable. Aug. 25 started with a flight to LA before continuing on to Cabo San Lucas the next day. Unfortunately, my luggage was so enamored by LAX that it took an extra day there kanoodling with all of the other foreign baggage. It chose to catch up with us in Cabo a couple of days later. The rest of the family had properly trained their bags to return to ... read more

Okay, a second to breath. Sorry this is so late. I honestly haven't really had a spare moment since last Friday. And even though it is Tuesday, I am going to pretend that it is still Friday. We'll just call it Honduran time. After a long day of final touches at school, we came home to get ready for the staff party that was going to take place at 6pm at Morgan's new bar. Well actually, its not quite a bar yet. Morgan is the high school literature teacher who has been teaching here for a couple years and recently married a honduran woman. He also recently purchased a space to turn into a bar that he hopes to have open by October. Its an absolutely beautiful open space and I'm sure we'll all be regulars ... read more

Last night Rachel complained that the toilet in the master bedroom wouldn’t stop running. So, figuring it was a quick-fix, I opened the top just as the tank was about to overflow. So I flushed the water down and started trying to figure out why the float wouldn’t turn off the flow of water. While working on the problem, the toilet started to overflow again, so I figured that I would just turn it off at the wall, preferring to work on it in the morning. As soon as I turned the shutoff valve, something let go inside the valve and waster started to gush from the shutoff valve! I just love Costa Rican craftsmanship… So, with toilet-water ankle deep in the bathroom, I ran to the basement and luckily found a new float setup for ... read more

Rachel and I just finished our first round of language immersion classes. The course consisted of 20 hours of classes over 2 weeks. We went from really floundering to get anything done to actually functioning in day to day life (alright Rachel is having trouble, but she admits that she is not great with new languages). We have been able to contract workers and order all of our bathroom supplies, to even be at a point where we can bargain prices in stores. I really realized that my capacity to communicate had changed a few days ago when I was throwing away vertical blinds before our painters started their work here. As I took out one load of slats, a car pulled up. I got a bit nervous because you just never know what people are ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Curaçao August 25th 2006

Ok, we're not in Curacao as the header says, we're actually in Bonaire which isn't listed on this thing.....but Curacao is only just across the water! So, it's been an eventful four days and lots of fun. Started out at 4am at Heathrow, where we queued for an hour at check-in, followed by over an hour at security. Lorna got the opportunity to strike a pose after looking dodgy enough to be asked to be a guinea pig for the new body scanning machine. Thankfully, this meant that she got to jump the queue and had time to buy fluids and food for the journey (you know how we both like our food!) The flight was delayed on the runway for an hour, but we still got to Amsterdam in loads of time. Next flight was ... read more

Remember how I said yesterday that meetings were word of mouth information? Well today I had a very exasperated principal come to my room to inform me that we were meeting in the library like "now". I asked him when he told us about the meeting and he said he told so and so to tell so and so to tell me. I didn't get the message sorry. I suggested memos so he didn't have to chase down everyone every time we have a meeting. What a fantastic idea says the principal. Yeah, I doubt it'll happen :) I have finished as much of my room that I can finish before Monday. I'm a little overwhelmed, but I have got to meet two of my little munchkins last night after the "parent meeting". So, just the ... read more

today i am relaxing. i just spent two hours on the beach...reading, swimming, listening to my IPOD, watching the birds, listening to the howler monkeys and just chilling. my knees are a little sore today from yesterdays climb up volcan maderas. it took us 7 hours, round trip, to climb the volcano. johan and i started at 11:30 and the weather at the bottom of the volcano was hot and humid. but as we ascended it started to rain and become cool. it was the most difficult volcano ascension experience that i have had so far, mostly because the water was running down the mountain making the clay and stones slippery. the trail up the volcano was pretty cool....narrow and all natural. there were no man made stairs or paved paths. the terrain changed as we ... read more

HOW IS ERETZ ISRAEL BOUGHT? During my first 2 days in Guatemala I rode some 160 kms in Alta Verapaz, and found also the time for walking a little in 2 beautiful national parks. It showed me Guatemala just as I dreamed of - steep hills, covered by very thick green vegetation. The roads were quite, and thus the whole area is really a paradise for cyclists - well, at least for those whose legs are strong enough for negotiating with these fucking mountains. My legs aren´t, and thus this paradise was for me a bit like ERETZ Israel - i.e., Nikneh Beyisurim. SRAK, SRAK Today I went to a SHUCKI - ZICKRIRIYA (I guess that this how the locals would call a berber). While waiting, I read a local paper (surprisingly, my Spansih is already ... read more
