Central America Caribbean » Guatemala September 4th 2006

I spent 5 weeks hiking around Mexico and Guatemala with a few friends from England. It was an amazing journey. We spent the first 5 days in Mexico before heading into Guatemala and staying with a family in Quetzaltenango to study Spanish. From here we did trips to volcanoes, Lake Atitlan and Antigua. After spending most of our trip near the pacific side we left for Guatemala City. Yuuk! Not a nice city, but we needed to stop for 2 nights because my buddy was having problems with his plumbing. (he needed a doctor). After the visit we headed for the Caribbean side of the island at Rio Dulce to do some hiking. This was great. We left one day to hike to some naturally heated waterfall, but on the way were some bandits waiting to ... read more

on friday after school 4 of us teachers decided it would be a nice relaxing weekend escape to go up to Cusuco national park which is in the Merendon mountain range behind Cofradia. to get up there u need a 4x4 so Ben, our host very kindly let us use his "1996" russian jeep. eventually Rory (Irish) and Sean (form Philly u.s) turned up at the bottom of our road with afore mentioned vehicle. they couldn´t bring it to the house where me and Fiona (irish- R´s girlf) were waiting because the state of the art car doent have a handbrake (and we live on a hill).... great start and we hadnt even started heading up the mountain yet... the locals sitting near the car found it hilarious that we all had to climb in the ... read more

I’ve spent this past week doing a combination of entertaining my friend Terry who is visiting for three weeks and doing more work than I have time for! Whatever happened to “Pura Vida” anyways! Actually, I cannot complain as last weekend I spent on the Pacific Coast and this week I spent on the Caribbean coast. The Caribbean coast…. I really love the Caribbean coast! It’s just not as built up as the Pacific Coast and there are still some good real estate deals there! I stayed at a cool B&B, Banana Azul, right on the beach in Puerto Viejo. While there, I learned that someone bought the land right behind Banana Azul, about 2000 meters, for $45,000! My God, one block to the beach and a perfectly flat piece of land with tons of room ... read more

Mom, breathe...I know how excited this title must make you, however, I have not found anyone who will let me steal thier babies. But I did find a way to borrow them on a regular basis! I forgot to put the most exciting part of my day on my Friday update. Mr. Cesar (the principal) announced that they would be opening a "nursery" class next year for three year olds. AND if I stay, the job is mine!!! Eeeee! Little baby Hondurans! Really, not too much more happened this weekend or if it did, I can't remember it because I was just too excited to write about the little ones. We went out Saturday night dancing again but luckily no one fell asleep this time and Sunday, I woke up late and went to school to ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Cuba September 3rd 2006

Hola from Cuba! Three days after wearing beanies, gloves and fleeces for a hike in the Yorkshire Dales, we stumbled into the Cuban heat. The daytime temperatures are much the same as in Brisbane, but night minimums and the humidity are much more like Darwin in summer. We still have no photos, and will add some when we can get hold of them, and find a computer terminal that doesn´t have all its software locked down. This may not be until we leave Cuba. Some first impressions... Everywhere we have been we are awed and inspired by the architecture. It is, of course, heavily influenced by colonial Spanish, with Moorish touches thrown in, but with a very Cuban flavour. Even though a lot of it is crumbling, it remains stunning. In the old buildings, the ceilings ... read more

9/01/06 Day 1 in Costa Rica Hacienda Guachipelin (the Ranch) 05:50 I am wide awke, sun is up, so time for a hike...the shortest destination, the Red Pool, @ 30 mins thru the forrest on a muddy trail. *** Got there to find a great swimming hole but decided being naked at 06:30 was a bit much....so I got my legs wet and left. Following the 'Exit' sign, yes someone has painted a sign blue with an arrow. A grassy trail along a barbedwire fence for less than 50 yards out onto the road.If I'd known, I'd of taken the exit to get in. much easier on the eyes. Got back at 7:00, just in time for breakfast, another buffet! Eggs, pancakes, fried bannanas, fruit, and juices...I got eggs and pancakes with apple juice. All fueled ... read more

9/02/06 Saturday Day 2 at Hacienda Guachipelin (the Ranch) last day Again, little sleep, lots of interruptions, up before 06:00! Yup, again woke up just after twilight, very cool, I guessed @73F. Refreshing, no prevailing smells! So off I go.....just outside the entrance I found the sign: "Lookout Poiint"....up the trail. COOL! Its a stucco 'rancho' with electricity and a banjo (bathroom) up on a knoll that is higher than the Ranch. Looks out over the forrest with an excellent view of the mountains, particularly, Rincon. OK, so I got pics on previous blog from this adventure, sue me! Lots of clouds coming from the Carribean side, clear towards the Pacific. There is a plaque embedded in the post says to the effect, the Electrical Society Association errected the building in 1997. (looks less than a ... read more

5 am was announced by the chickens outside our window. We packed our bags, which has become much easier since a routine has been established. Dirty clothes and shoes / sandals in the bottom, then extra books, first aid kit and homeopathy remedies, clean clothes, and rain jacket close to the top. Zip lock bags containing 4 pieces of similar clothing make it easy to extract what you need at short notice. Before leaving, Katharine found two other travellers sleeping outside having arrived to Palenque in the middle of the night, and invited them to use our room for the rest of the morning. Since they were greatly admiring our head torches, Katharine managed to find (in her now super organised bag) her second head torch, which she gave to them. It was greatly appreciated and ... read more
