After a long day of ponponara practice, Sarah and I headed for home and promptly passed out for a few hours. We almost didn't get up Saturday night and once we did, we really had no ambition to go out. Being the troopers that we are however, we prettied ourselves up for a night of dancing and went out to explore a new bar we had heard about from some friends. What we discovered that night: (11pm-2am) 1. It is easy to make an ass out of yourself by wandering around the first floor of a building when the bar is on the second floor. 2. The security people will notice your confused expressions and lead you upstairs. 3. When you ask the bartender to surprise you with a mixed drink, it will be cheap and ... read more

Ok guys, I know a few of you have been waiting for a few of these photos so here goes... We're staying at an amazing hostel called 'Brunela' (which is the spanish, feminine version of the name Bruce, and also the name of the leading lady in a novel written by the owner - go figure..). Since we're here for a few weeks Juan (the owner) is only charging us $4 a night, for which we get the BEST coffee in the world free every morning, a cosy room which we share with one other guy, Todd - American, (we get the whole mezzanine upstairs), free use of the surf boards and a WHOLE LOT OF FUN. Brunela is basically a bachelor pad for surfers (mostly from argentina and uruguay at the moment) and Ali and ... read more

Hi all, I'm back in Santa Teresa (again!, what can I say? we love this place!) which means I can blog to my hearts content. So here goes.. A photo update of Profelis, the centre Ali and I have just left after working and doing research there for the last month. We had very rewarding experiences at Profelis, enjoying the company of wonderful, like-minded, people who were willing to share all manner of information. It is a real shame they are closing down this particular centre, a result of difficulties with the owner private land on which the centre is based. They have a directive based in San Carlos however, and the cats will be relocated there at the end of September. Welfare standards are very high in both places. I wish I could go into ... read more

To those of you that have contacted Richard or I requesting a new journal entry...HERE! OK! IIT TOOK ME FOREVER BUT DON´T YOU GO WORRYING ABOUT THAT!!!! And so we reach the last leg of our trip. Richard doesn´t like me saying that or starting any sentences with the words "when I get home...". So I won't! MEXICO CITY I was a little scared of Mexico City as every time we mentioned it to someone they´d do that sucking through the teeth thing and then tut and shake their heads before saying "You must be so careful, Mexcico City is a dangerous place.."¨etc. etc. We arrived at a much nicer than scummy LA airport and found everybody to be very helpful. Tourist Info at the airport kindly arranged a hotel for us for $30 per night. ... read more

So we don't have a day like this in Canada, but it was definately crazy and fun all at the same time. In the morning, we still had classes as normal. It was so cute though. We had a staff meeting this morning so I was late getting to unlock my door this morning. I was so curious as to why there were not students waiting outside the classroom door like they usually do. It turns out they somehow got into the classroom, locked the door, turned out the lights, and hid behind the desks. I saw them as I passed but pretended to be very surprised when I opened the door and they all jumped up and screamed. So cute. The morning was fairly normal. We did math and a spelling test and the usual. ... read more

We navigated our way through Guatemala City with the help of some strangers. Hopped on-board a “Chicken Bus” aka old US school bus (the ones you see on Snoopy cartoons) and spent the next few hours squished in a tight space while being assaulted by offensive odours. We arrived late to Antigua, Guatemala’s old cobblestone capital. A helpful man showed us to our desired budget hotel. We tried to negotiate a better price to fit into our budget. No luck. They directed us across the street to a much darker and dirtier location owned by the same person. ¨Oh yes please, we´d much prefer to sleep with cockroaches, thank you¨ As if! We were very tired and didn’t want to haggle any longer so we said yes to what they offered us. As we settled in, ... read more

Not much to report from the beginning of this weekend. I felt absolutely horrible Friday morning and thought that I might pass out in front of my class. Another teacher mentioned this to our principal, Mr. Cesar, who promptly started 20 questions. Being that I was feeling nauseous and it was the morning, I'm thinking he might have been thinking one of two things - I was hungover or I was pregnant. I would choose the first any day. Either way, Mr. Cesar was very sweet. He made the maintenance man run to the grocery store to get me some tea and then took over giving my class a spelling pretest so I could drink it in peace. Amazingly enough it made me feel better for a bit. What also made my day was the fact ... read more

It is weird! In the past two weeks, I have had two dogs try to bite me! This occurred while looking at properties in the Central Valley. The first time, I was leaving a house in Escazu, high above San Jose, and I was petting a seemingly friendly dog, and then all of a sudden, he just tried to take away a piece of my flesh on my arm. Luckily, he missed my arm. The second time, I was at my friend George’s house in Puriscal. His dog was on a leash but he just came up behind me and tired to take a bite out of my arse! I’m no rump roast but what is it with me and dogs??? I suspect both dogs may have smelled my own dogs on me. So, in the ... read more

Our trip to Belize thus far hasn’t gone quite like I had thought it would go. That being said, it now dawns on me that we really didn’t have any firm plans in Belize other than meeting Matt and Melissa in Caye Caulker and enjoying some island life for a few days. And we did in fact accomplish both of those tasks. I guess I just didn’t reckon we’d have so much island life. But I’m getting ahead of myself. So I’ll take a step back and pick up where we left off way back in Playa del Carmen. We knew that the trip from Playa del Carmen to Caye Caulker would be a long haul. We even split it into two days, but geesh, did it seem like a lot of work! The first day ... read more
